    2. Carolyn Obertein
    3. Hi Shelly, This is fantastic. Thank you. I will post this to the mail list. I'll try to get over there this week to photograph and check it out! Saja423@aol.com wrote: Hi Carolyn, Please pass this along to the MISAGINA mailing list. Today I found the Swarthout family cemetery in Saginaw, MI. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. It is family owned and I was able to speak with the owner. He is the great grandson of A.R. Swarthout who originally owned the land which he purchased from the government on or before 1855. You can find the Swarthout name on the 1877 Saginaw Platt Map. Several Swarthout's owned over 1,000 acres. The cemetery is located at the intersection of Hawthorn and Swarthout off of Brockway directly behind the Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery. Brockway was called the "Crossroad". Many stones are still readable and many more are fully covered under the debris. Unfortunately some headstones were vandalized about 25 years ago. The following is a list of some of the names I recorded today. The owner is willing to allow anyone who is interested to come onto the property to take photos, stone rubbings, etc. He has some documentation as to the names of those buried there. He recently moved back to Saginaw from a 15 year absense and has purchased his family home. If you go to the cemetery, he will come out to talk to you. His name is John Cammin and his home is next to the cemetery at 1500 Hawthorne Drive Names: Swarthout, A. R. born: 28 Sept 1796 died: 5 June 1881 Swarthout, Hannah (spouse) born: 7 May 1798 died: 22 Mar1877 Swarthout, John born: 1811 died: 1899 Swarthout, Anna born: 1811 died: 1900 John's spouse Swarthout, James K. born: 1874 died: 1945 Swarthout, Angeline born: 1842 died: 1936 Swarthout (many others with this last name) Cammin, John Cammin, Mildred (Swarthout) John's spouse Steinbauer, John Steinbauer, Martha (?) Steinbauer, John F. McLean, John (infant) William, Elizabeth died: 1872 William (several other's with this last name) Trier, Thaobald C. born: 1831 died: 1893 Spaeth, J. C. Spaeth, Anna born: 1820 died: 1906 Hiesrodt, John M. military man C.O.F. 1 Mich. E & M Smith, John Heinlein Pistorious (several) NOTE: There are other readable stones and many, many that need to be uncovered. Mr. Cammin, the owner and descendant of the Swarthout & Cammin families wants to restore this precious graveyard as much as possible. Maybe some of us can volunteer and then the headstones can be documented and photographed. 3. The Saginaw Historical Society at one time had Dr. Mud's gr grandson researching the old homes of Saginaw and their original drawings. You may want to contact them. Also the library has a card index of homes in Saginaw. Jerolyn@aol.com wrote:I'm trying to date an architectual drawing and identify the firm and architect that did the drawing of my Great Grandparents farm house in Blumfield Twp, Saginaw, Michigan. The drawing is a pen and ink sketch of the farm house and barns. The name on the drawing is: " E. Boersch.del ". It would have been done between 1865 and 1890, and I am assuming that the architect was from Saginaw, although Frankenmuth is also nearby. Has anyone done research on Saginaw Architectual firms in late 1800's? Has anyone done research on this name BOERSCH? 2. Hi Carolyn, The current Saginaw, MI phone book has many people with the Boensch surname. I am thinking that your Boersch may be Boensch instead. There is one business listing: Boensch Garage in Buenal Vista Twp. There are 2 Boensch persons living in Indiantown. Let me know if you want some phone numbers. Shelly

    3. Carolyn, do you live in the Saginaw area? I bet you could find something in an old city directory at Hoyt Library. Or go to their website if you don't live around here and send them an e-mail and I'm sure someone would be glad to look it up. I know they have a lot of old directories there but I'm not sure how far back they go. 3. We maintain the Michigan Marriage Index Database that has over 430,000 records of marriages that took place in Michigan. As part of our database we record the email address of researchers that have an interest in the various records. We have many records that have email address that are no long valid for one reason or another. One example is the shutting down of "@home.com". We have attempted to obtain accurate email address for those that are no longer valid, but, this has caused an expression of concern for many subscribers to the various mailing lists as they feel that we are overloading the system. We will no longer attempt to obtain correct email addresses. IF ANYONE HAS PROVIDED US WITH EMAIL ADDRESSES TO ATTACH TO THE MARRIAGE RECORDS AND HAVE CHANGED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS PLEASE SEND US A MESSAGE THAT INCLUDES BOTH THE "OLD" AND "NEW" EMAIL ADDRESS. With several thousand email addresses in the database we cannot check everyones email so please only send us a message if you have had a change. 1. [MISAGINA] Find Susan Warner for Your Research in Saginaw...
    2. Brent, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. My recommendation for ANY research in Saginaw is Susan Warner, an independent genealogist who knows the Hoyt Library and the courthouse like it was her own. If she can't find something I assure you it is not there. She kick-started my research about four years ago and the tide has continued to flow. I don't know if she is currently acepting private contracts for research but it's worth a try. Best wishes for success there! 3. Newly uploaded to the Saginaw MIGenWeb site: 1913 Aurora Year Book - Juniors and Seniors thanks to Lynn (SaginawSue) Also started the school census for Richland Twp. District No. 4 and the first 400 listings are online. The cenuses for this township are at CMU's Clarke Historical Archives in Mt. Pleasant. They start in 1869 and go to 1900. The supervisor's book also contains teacher contracts for the time period which will be done afterwards. The 400 listings are just four years of the census so far. If anyone lives in the Mt. Pleasant area and wants to help we could meet once weekly there. They also have a couple of other Saginaw school items to work on. Jonesfield Twp. records are also there in the supervisor's book, along with a book that contains photos of classes from 1893 that was done for the World's Fair. The World's Fair entry contains the following schools- Houghton, Emerson, Salina, Crary, Potter, Central, Germania, Jones, Hoyt, and Sweet. Also the High School (description does not list which, but I suspect Eastern or what is now Saginaw High School). The archivist okayed the use of a digital camera for these if needed as opposed to photocopy to get good copies of the photos. You can get to any of these from the index page at: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/saginaw/ Thanks to all who are helping get Saginaw records online and doing lookups for visitors! 3. I have added Garfield 1 & 2 Cemetery headstone photos to the website. Part of Lakefield Cemetery is also done. It has a cemetery map. Click on a section of the map to take you to the headstone photos. I know many of you follow the war in Iraq closely. Many of you realized that I feel the people that serve our country are our heros. Without their courage and giving their lives we would be a 3rd world country and not have the freedom and lives we live today. So in honor to the soldiers that have given their lives thus far in Iraq and those that have been captured or missing now has it's own special section. There is a page dedicated to each one of these soldiers with photos of the soldier and other information. If you know of a soldier that I have missed please let me know so I can dedicate a special page to that hero also. 3. I am not sure what you mean by the term "nunnery". Most Catholic churches had convents that housed the sisters who served that parish. If you are looking for Arenac and Iosco convents, you might try the following: Holy Family Catholic Church, 403 Wilkinson Street, East Tawas, MI (St. Joseph's Hospital is also located in Tawas); Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5300 North U.S. Highway 23, Oscoda, MI 48750; and for Arenac: Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church, 423 West Cedar Street, Standish, MI 48658. It would all depend upon the Order to which the sisters belonged and where their Mother House might be that would probably have the records you need.
