This day, which has a history stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. While enjoying this three-day weekend, be sure to take the time to ponder about the sacrifices all our war heroes took to protect this country's freedom. Honor those who have died so that others - at home and around the world - can enjoy the freedoms of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. We walked among the crosses We walked among the crosses Where our fallen soldiers lay.And listened to the bugle As taps began to play. The Chaplin led a prayer We stood with heads bowed low. And I thought of fallen comrades I had known so long ago. They came from every city Across this fe! rtile land.Tahat we might live in freedom. They lie here 'neath the sand. I felt a little guiltyMy sacrifice was small.I only lost a little timeBut these men lost their all. Now the services are overFor this Memorial Day.To the names upon these crosses I just want to say, Thanks for what you've given No one could ask for more.May you rest with God in heavenFrom now through evermore. I think we should take this weekend to honor the heros that made us who we are today. If you have a veteran you would like to boast about now is the time. Also, why they are your hero. I will add them to "Honor Our Veterans" section on the "Saginaw County Photographs" website. If you would like to email a photo of your veteran to go along with what you have written about your veteran I will make a special page for each veteran. Please post your veteran to this list for all to read. You can email me the photo at carolinsaginaw@yahoo.com. I would personally like to honor my husband, Wayne Obertein. He was part of the Vietnam conflict. I am so proud of him for never losing his humanity while stationed in Vietnam. I have been very honored that he has spoken to me about the time he spent there. He has spoken to me about the people which I find most interesting. He made friends with the people in the village close to his camp. He would spend time getting to know them and! sharing meals with them. When it came time for his unit to leave Vietnam there were 4 guys that still had 3 weeks left to put in. They were told that they could catch up with another unit when it arrived. The people of the village told him that since it would be a few days before the unit arrived that he should stay with them because it would be very dangerous for so few of them to remain alone. During those days the North Vietnames came into the village looking for him. One family hid him in a bench with a secret bottom and sat their children on top of the bench. They saved his life. To them I owe a world of gratitude. He has many pictures from when he served there. His mother saved all of his letters. I have put them into a book for future generations. We would sit with his pictures and I would take one at a time and ask him to tell me about that picture. I recorded and later transcribed his words. This will be a treasure to his gr gr grandchildren someday.Way! ne, I love you and and want to thank you for being our children's and my hero.Carolyn Obertein Census, Bios, Obits, Cemetery, Church, & Vet Photos, Platt & Cemetery Maps, Citizens, Vets, and Poll List - Visit the Saginaw County Photograph Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~evansandobertein/saginaw.htm

There is an Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bay County which is the next north of Saginaw. http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/bay/cemeteries.htm That might be the one you need. Then again, are you sure it is Oak Ridge and not Oakwood? Oakwood is a city owned cemetery located at the corner of Gratiot road (M-46) and Midland road (M-47). Does anybody know where Oak Ridge Cemetery in Saginaw is? I have an ancestor that was buried there in 1924. Thank you.
I am desperately looking for the parentage of Samuel Sherburne born 13 Sept, 1800 in He married Philinda GEORGE in Walden, VT in 1826. His first son is named George SIMON Sherburne. George and his family settled in Clinton County, Michigan. Samuel came into Michigan in the 1830s and died in Detroit in 1846. His son John came into Brady Township, Saginaw County, It was there that John and his wife Jemima Waite raised their children. I have searched for years to find a parent for Samuel Sherburne, father of this family, born 1800, supposedly in Vermont. Linda Hackney, a descendant of George Simon Sherburne, and myself would love to hear from another descendant that perhaps can help us. Nancy, if you are talking about St. Joseph on 6th street, they have the records there in the parish office. I had an oportunity a few years ago to look at them for myself. They have a new priest now so I'm not sure how receptive he may be to queries. Also, in case you didn't know, they have built a new church at the same site and the old building has been or is in the process of being torn down. Instead of waiting I put what was done online so you can start looking for who you want to look up when the images go online. After working for months on Calvary Cemetery Record books I am finally at a point where I am putting the transcribed index of the record book and the actual scanned images of the index on the website. After the index is on the site I will start putting the actual scanned images of the records on the site for you to view. In the mean time I have transcribed the entire index of over 5000 names that are buried in Calvary cemetery. This transcription is the best I could do with the handwritting in the books. I feel that many of the names I transcribed are not accurate. So if you look at the transcribed index keep this in mind or you can see the actual scanned index page for yourself. From the main page click on "City of Saginaw". Then click "Calvary Catholic Cemetery" and then click "Calvary Cemetery Record Book" Many more cemeteries have been photographed or are being photographed by our volunteers. The weather has been perfect for this...not too hot...not too cold. The! re are no weeds to contend with and the moss on the stones has not started growing yet. If you would like to volunteer to do a cemetery or part of a cemetery please let me know. I have about 6 cemeteries that are photographed and I am in the process of indexing before I can add them to the site. Also I am looking for old church histories of Saginaw Churches. If you have one of these church history books please contact me. When all the cemeteries are photographed we should have a very good surname index of veterans that are burried in Saginaw county cemeteries. If you would like to send me a picture and a short biography of your veteran I will add it to the site. The veteran project has become my pet project for the last 3 years. I wish I could honor every veteran with their own page. And I would if I could find information on every veteran. Hope everyone is having a wonderful spring!Good LuckCarolyn Obertein Census, Bios, Obits, Cemetery, Church, & Vet Photos, Platt & Cemetery Maps, Citizens, Vets, and Poll List - Visit the Saginaw County Photograph Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~evansandobertein/saginaw.htm
One more yearbook has been added to the pile. The 1907 Aurora of East Saginaw High School has been added to the Saginaw MIGenWeb site. Hope to get another Centralia done soon. The yearbooks are listed at: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/saginaw/yearbooks.asp If anyone has any early yearbooks they want to index and add to the data, it is quite easy to do. Just type the names out Surname,Given into a text file and include the name of the school, yearbook and the year and class at the top of each list. Attach to an e-mail and I can put up with the rest of the books pretty easily. Commencement programs can be added too. Enjoy! Pat --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. A few weeks ago, someone was writing about the Swarthout Cemetery, located in the rear of the Holy Cross Cemetery on Brockway Road. My mother-in-law's g.grandmother, Rebecca King, was buried there. About 30-35 years ago, my mother-in-law went to the cemetery to visit her g.grandmother's grave. She couldn't find it where it was suppose to be. She searched and searched. Finally, she saw a tombstone nearly buried in a pile of leaves at the fence. She uncovered the small stone and found it was her g.grandmother's stone. She didn't know where the grave was located so could not return it to its site. Finally, she loaded it into the trunk of the car (it was a small stone) and brought it home. She had a small flower garden at the side of the garage and set the stone in the middle of the garden. It was a sweet little stone and looked so peaceful there in the middle of the flowers. Many years later, she died and the farm was sold. We lifted the small tombstone and brought it with us. It was given to my son to be its caretaker with his promise to forever preserve it. The stone was for Rebecca (Paddock) King. She was born 1807, mar. Heman (or Eman) King. Believe they may be from Frederickstown, Dutchess Co., N.Y. They came to Wixom, Oakland Co. MI in 1850. She is first listed in the 1876 Saginaw directory, living with her son, Orin P. King. Rebecca (Paddock) King died Oct. 3, 1877. May she ever be in peace.

Dear Carolyn, There is a Larry Swarthout who lives on Brockway in Saginaw who has done lots of family history research. Have you contacted him? He also has lots of info. Kindly, Jan
