    1. [MISAGINA] East Saginaw Streets
    2. Does anyone in this flood of memory recollections have any pictures or know of where there are some of any Saginaw homes/neighborhoods around the turn of the century (1900). More specifically any Johnson Street homes. I traveled to Saginaw in '98 from California to do family research and as I am sure most of you know - the neighborhood is nowhere near what it was years ago. My family's home is long gone and a lot of the homes are run down or boarded up (11th and Johnson). Thank you. [email protected]

    2. I went to North Intermediate School and remember that when weather allowed, Mrs. Newburg took the girls' "gym" classes to Bliss Park to practice track events or play softball. And, yes, we had to wear those "lovely" green one-piece gym suits. Ugh! To be seen in public in those things was so embarrassing. It was especially mortifying when the boys "gym" class used the park at the same time (Mr. Newburg's class). Mary Sue

    2. Anyone go to the concerts in the park on Sunday afternoon at Bliss Park. My uncle played there in full dress uniform for those concerts. There were also beautiful flower gardens. And the slides were sooooo high they took your breath away.....I was "little".

    3. I have a "partial" copy of a book of maps of Saginaw Co.(copyright 1916) which includes Patrons' Reference Directory, advertising section and illustrations (both people and places --Saginaw Court house, St Vincent's Orphan Home Bancroft House, Saginaw Canoe Club as well as residences however it doesn't appear to give street address unless it is a business. Would anyone know if Johnson Street would have a R.F.D. number? 3. Nancy, I remember some of the places that your husband came up with. I also wonder about your last name Kubik. I lived close to and went to school (Webber) with Harold and Gerald Kubik. Is your husband related to these brothers? I think they lived on Lowell Street. 2. Hi Jim: That was Congress St. that they put though and it took out the big, tall pear trees that Butch Kundinger had in his front yard. Also do you remember Kozy Korner on the corner of Court and Bay?

    3. Well said Kevin! If you don't want to read people's memories-don't open the Spatz bread ones. I personally am enjoying them. So many of these things I have heard my mother speak of for many years, as she grew up on the West Side of Saginaw. A lot of them are before "my time", but it still brings back memories for me and I am so glad I still have my mother with me to reminisce about her life while growing up. Some are also sparking memories in my childhood. I now remember being fascinated by the money tubes in Weichmann's and the mezzanine floor there and many other memories of downtown Saginaw. Keep it up! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 05, 2001 4:07 PM Subject: Re: [MISAGINA] Re: Spatz Bread > In a message dated 3/5/01 10:48:56 AM Pacific Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > > Enough about SPATZ BREAD - ! > > > > This is a great way to stimulate memories and possibly open connections! > Please keep the memories coming! > > Sincerely, > Kevin O'Brien > Laguna Hills, CA > Researching: Bean, Cross, Dorchester Gauley, Gillie, > Halley, Lowe, Nelson, Perkins, Shannon, > Smith ( Jefferson County, NY),Sundell, > Van Schaick, Warner... > > > ______________________________

    3. Ken, I remember people mentioning a baseball team from that era in Saginaw. When we lived on Bay street, before the east-west streets were put in between State and Cooper, there was a hermit (our term for him) named Frank who lived behind us who was supposed to have been a star player on that original Saginaw team. When the E-W street was put in (can't remember the name of it) his house was in the right of way and it was moved. I remember hearing that, when Frank died, they found his house filled with stacks of newspapers and other stuff he'd collected so that there were just pathways through the stuff. I believe he had died of malnutrition. This was after we had moved from Bay street, but I remember him wandering around collecting sticks and things, and coming to the door for handouts. Apparently, he had never recovered from the disappointment of not making it with the Tigers. The Bears were a privately owned club that was part of the A league that included several farm teams: The tigers team in Flint, the White sox and Red sox in Grand Rapids and Muskegon (I can't remember which was which), Dayton and Fort Wayne had teams in it ,too. There was a lot of talk, then, about baseball coming 'back' to Saginaw. This was in the summer of 1948, I believe. I was between my sophomorer and junior years in high school. Jim

    2. I have pictures of my grandmother standing in front of the family Pendell grocery about 1900. No cars. There was a parade. Deer haning fron the hooks, and laying on the porch. The pictures were in the old Fordney Hotel. How about the Daniel Theatre when you could see two cowboy movies, or Abbot and Costello on Saturdays, they had a radio contest show, where you could win nickles to spend at the candy counter, and the show was 15 cents. This is bringing back great memories. p.s. also Wagner's Ice Cream. I think it was on Bay St. Jody

    2. Don't forget the dances at the YWCA on Friday nights, the peanut store on Genesee across from Edwards men shop. I don't remember a Roy's Drug but I do recall Roy's Bar, next to Falers drug store on Court near Bay. Also Wagners dairy bar and Piekerts store on the corner of Court and Bay.

    3. Hey Jim Glick, I certainly remember Bob Buhl from SHS. Since track and baseball seasons overlapped, Bob and I often shared Alumni Field for practice. He as a member of the Baseball team and me on the track team. I was sorry to hear of his recent passing. I didn't realize that he lived in Florida as I too am a Florida resident. I graduated from SHS in 1946. I think Bob graduated in 1947. Next to Liz (Hollywood Florida), Liz, I live over on the west coast of Florida in Cape Coral. As for my years at the Anderson Pool -- I worked there from my Junior High School years (Webber School) thru the summer of 1946 when I graduated from Saginaw High School. So I think I worked there from 1941 to 1946. I too have special memories of "walking to work" at the Anderson Pool. I could walk the railroad tracks from near Jefferson Ave to the Zoo. Then cut through the Waterworks where I oftentimes went inside to see the gigantic pumps, filters and pipes. The doors were never locked! Can you imagine having direct access to a city's drinking water system in today's world? for Patricia, I too remember those big homes along Washington. Do you by any chance remember a large fenced in area btwn some of those homes directly across from Hoyt Park that was owned by Consumers Power. I played in the VFW Drum & Bugle Corps and we practiced in that fenced in area once a week for many years. As for ice deliveries -- I was my Mother's little iceman. She would have me take my wagon to the filling station about 2 blocks away on Jefferson which also sold ice. She always gave me an extra nickel so I could buy a Pepsi while I was there getting the ice. 2. Dear Saginaw Friends, Thanks for sharing your memories of Saginaw. I have really enjoyed reading your memorable experiences these past few days. I look forward to reading your email to discover what your memories are of our home town. Your stories are such an important part of my past life experiences in Saginaw, and I am so delighted to hear from each of you, because you have jogged my memory bank of many events that I have not thought of in many years. These are great little notes/stories for us to write in our Genealogy books. I remember: Walking along the Saginaw River bank behind "THE GROVE," the big homes on Washington to go to the Anderson swimming pool every summer day. Also, Winkler's Ice House on the corner of Atwater & Washington. My Mother would put a sign in the window when we needed ice, 25 or 50 lb., and the ice man would deliver a block of ice and put it in our wooden ice box. AND, the sight and sounds of glass milk bottles when the milkman and his horse drawn wagon would travel through our neighborhood delivering his dairy products to our unlocked doors. Oh how we loved to feed his horse when he would stop near our house for a break. The Saginaw Fair was one of the highlights for us during our teen years. Wasn't it great getting a school day off to go to the Fair? Please keep sharing your memories, Patricia

    1. [MISAGINA] Schuch Hotel Memories
    2. My grandpa was a close friend of Mr. Schuck. When Schuch was Sheriff of Saginaw County, Schuck appointed Pat Garvey as his undersheriff. Pat was married to one of our Perkins'. Unsubstantiated rumor has it that grandpa lost the family farm in a card game in an upper room at the hotel. By the way, JANJ6744 and I are cousins. This is really a lot of fun!
