    2. I think on the NW corner of Cooper and Bay, they were friends of my parents. I think her name was Hattie ????. Where did you live on Bay? Schuettes lived close to the corner. I don't recall to many families north of Cooper but south closer to Court I do remember some. Fritz's, Piekerts, Schmerheims boy memory fades over the years.

    3. Bob, Sure do remember it. Wasn't that a Kundinger operation ? Jack Anderson, Kundinger's son-in-law lived right across the street from us and ran the five and dime store behind Ippels. Young Jack was a few years younger than us, but we'd play with him so we could have access to the big Kundinger yard and the field there on Bay where their haystacks were great to play in and on - much to the irritation of the Kundingers. We'd have pick-up softball games in the field after the hay was down and kids from all over the neighborhood would join in. The Kundinger's big, old, Victorian house is still there, I believe. I was in it a few times with Jackie and it was unbelievably grand. Those pear trees you mentioned just flashed in my mind, a long row of them down the property line, next to that big, old grey house. When they put Congress through, they took out the Geyser's big cement block house and their vinyard and another, brick house that's now on the corner of Cooper and Bay, I think. We bottled a lot of grape juice from those grapes. I can't remember the name of the family next to the Geysers, whose house was moved. The Biron house is still there on NE corner. We lived next to them at 1428 until my dad died in 1943 and we had to move. When did they put those streets in and turn Bay into a street instead of a two lane road with ditches ? Jim

    3. Ken, I'm sure that the Bears and that league started in 1948. I was a batboy for them that first year. I've been trying to think of the owner's name. I think it was Berringer. I went to Kalamazoo to college (Western) in the fall of '50 and went into service in the fall of '52. I don't remember if the league and the Bears lasted that long or not. When I got back in '56, I had other things on my mind and didn't pay any attention. I vaguely remember something about the western Michigan teams hanging on for a while. (Don't know if the Western Michigan Whitecaps are part of that heritage or not) I believe that the minor leagues went through a real downturn in the '50s and '60s and the Majors pulled back to a few leagues in warmer climates. As for the Ducks, I have a vague recollection of someone saying that the first world war really put an end to them and whatever competition they had in those days. I don't remember mention that there was a formal league. I think they scheduled games as they could with whoever was willing, probably with teams from other towns and even the Tigers if they were willing. I'm thinking right now that the best source of information on this would be the Saginaw News sports department's morgue. I'll see if I can find a web site or maybe someone out there can contact them directly and let us know the URL or get the info. Jim

    3. Sorry for the length of this message, but........... I am researching the names KINNEY and WILSON from the Saginaw area. First, I'd like to say that I have never been to Saginaw and actually for the last twenty years have lived in Australia, but I have enjoyed reading your memories of earlier days in Saginaw very much. I sure hope to one day try Spatz Bread! It sounds soooo good! The little money tubes brought back memories too. I was also fascinated by them as a child in Seattle where I grew up. My entire paternal line has been in Michigan for several generation so if anyone out there can be of assistance, it would be appreciated. What is written below is just about everything I know except that Anna Martha Wilson (Willson) and Peter W. Kinney were married in Genesee County in 1854. She was born in NY and he is NJ. East Saginaw was shown as the residence of Peter W. KINNEY at the time of their marriage. The Wilson family (Anna Martha's parents and siblings) moved to Oakland County in 1838 from NY and mostly remained there in the area of Springfield Township. Anna Willson's obituary appeared in the Saginaw Evening News, Wednesday December 26, 1894, p. 6 Anna M., wife of Peter W. Kinney, died yesterday morning at the family residence, 413 North Franklin street, of consumption, aged 58 years. She leaves a husband, one daughter, Miss Belle, and two sons, George W. and Daniel W., all of this city. Funeral tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the residence. **************************** Daniel Webster Kinney was my g-grandfather. His wife Fanny KENNY died in 1893 and he remarried to an unknown woman who already had a daughter. He died in Bay City in 1899 to the best of my knowledge. ****************************** In an old Atlas dated 1877, someone was able to find a P.W. Kinney living in Saginaw and owning lots west of the Saginaw River in the Northern part of Saginaw. It shows that P.W. Kinney owns four lots bordering Pine Street on the west (runs North/South) and Oak Street (on the South), and Zilwaukie Road on the East. The lots are together, and to the East of the land is a steam planing mill, owned by W. H. Edwards & Co. That business is on a waterway connected to the Saginaw River. No Neighbors are listed on the other lots owned by P.W. Kinney. ************************** On Wednesday, December 26, 1894, the same day that Peter's wife Anna's obituary appeared in the Saginaw Evening News the following was also printed: INSANITY AND DEATH Double Affliction in a Well-known Saginaw Family. Peter W. Kinney, of 413 North Franklin street, whose wife died yesterday morning is locked up at headquarters, having become violently insane. The mental affliction has been coming on for some time and has assumed an aggravated form, the unfortunate man making several attacks upon visitors who have called at his house. His son made application in the probate court this morning to have him adjudged insane and sent to the asylum at Pontiac, and a hearing was set for the case next Friday. Peter W. Kinney's Death Certificate from Oakland County, MI showed that he died in Pontiac on December 6, 1911. The cause of death was shown as senility - epileptic insanity. His occupation was shown as a Millwright. His parents names were shown as William KINNEY and Mary WILSON both apparently born in New Jersey. Mary Wilson may or may NOT be related to Anna Martha's Wilson line. I really just don't know at this point. Well, now you know just about everything I do about my KINNEY and WILSON line. If anyone has ANY connection to these names and/or could give me a little more information on the area that they lived in at that time.... it would be greatly apprecitated. Many thanks in advance, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia

    1. [MISAGINA] Jonesfield Township ( Merrill), Michigan Memories
    2. This has worked so well for the Saginawians that I though I'd throw the hat into the ring for Merrill. My grandpa W. G. Shannon, penned a small book of his memories from the early days of Merrill on up to about the time he passed away in 1962. Our surnames were: SHANNON, GILLIE, WELCH, RYAN, MALLEK, METHOD, ROSS, PINKERTON, MCGILL DES RIVIERE, BIELBY and GAULEY. The Shannon farms were located on Fenmore Road and Shannon Road. At one time, grandpa owned the property on the corner of Fenmore Road and M-46, that until the 1920s was a cemetery. The original John Robert Shannon farmhouse still stands on Shannon Road, currently the McNier family farm. Our Shannon farm used to be owned by Ted and Bea Emery. The house had a beauty shop in it for a while until was eventually torn down around 1990, but it was a beautiful farm in its heyday. F. & A.M. Lodge 411 I have a photograph of the officers of Masonic Lodge 411 Merrill, from 1915 with the names: V.B. Thompson, J.L. Walking, W.G. Shannon, C.E. Johnston, E.H. Massecar, R.T. Maynard, A.F. Swartout, H.D. Packard, E.M. Ling and C.E. Smith. The old building was owned by Mr. Packard and the lodge sat above the drug store on the corner of Midland and M-46. Grandpa was the Past Master from 1917. If anyone has kin in the photo please contact me and I'll E-mail you a copy of the photo. I'd like to hear about the early days of Merrill as I'm sure others would. The book written by W. G. Shannon was titled "Looking Backward - The History of Jonesfield Township." It's about 29 pages long and chock-full of little-known stories about the locals and the township. It was an informal documentation but written from the heart. Grandpa was known as a "local historian" and "Pioneer Son." If you would like a copy of the book sent to you as an attachment, please send me a request under a separate E-mail addressed to me directly, so no one can collect the addresses of those subscribed to the MISAGINA-L and use them for spamming. Sincerely, Kevin O'Brien Laguna Hills, CA P.S. If you need research done in Merrill, contact Duane Miller [email protected] Great rates! Go Bubba 1!
