And, yes, we had to wear those "lovely" green one-piece gym suits. Ugh! To be seen in public in those things was so embarrassing. It was especially mortifying when the boys "gym" class used the park at the same time (Mr. Newburg's class). Mary Sue

    2. My Perry family was found in Saginaw in 1865. They were lumber inspectors. In the City Directory for Saginaw, they were working for E R Ayres & Co. I was wondering if there was any information on this company in the book listed above. Perhaps it might state who owned it. Sincerely, Bonnie

    3. Hi Nancy. According to several e-mails I just now read Mr. Gross was indeed with the News. I did not know that. Mr. Carter did also do some historic buildings prints. And I do believe there was Carter Shop in the mall, but I think it is now gone, as is so much of the good memories of Saginaw. 1. [MISAGINA] THE SAGINAWS: When Timber Was King by Stuart Gross
    2. This book was a take off from Frankie and the Baron. There are thoughts that it may have been somewhat autobiographical. It is a very good book about the lumber baron's in Saginaw in the 1800's. It is his last book. He died at the time it was going to print. Gross was the editor of the Saginaw News for 36 years. He also has a video that can be obtained from Zauel Library of him talking about Saginaw History at the Historical Society. Jan Johnson is the illustrator of THE SAGINAWS: When Timber Was King. It can be purchased through Amazon.com or Delta College. Sam Carter did own the Carter Shop. A person who has lots of his prints is the florist from Whitney Flowers on Michigan Ave in Saginaw. I have done some paintings and drawings of the Saginaw area also. Jan

    1. [MISAGINA] Information
    2. A. J.
    3. Hi, I'm new to this list, but was on it a long time ago. I'm seeking information on several families that lived in Saginaw from the 1860's on. Any information would be greatly appreciated: They are: John Bluem (Bleum, Blum) family, arrived in Saginaw in 1862, from Germany/NY. John was employed as a cooper and also worked the last 20 years at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Wife was Mary Smith/Schmidt. They had 9 children, among them my gg mother, Mary. This family was from Germany, came to NY in 1852, came to Saginaw in 1862. Father John Schmidt found in early Saginaw deaths (1869) Dominick & Victorie Lafayette, (Lafeuillade) came to Saginaw in 1878-79 from Detroit area. They had 10 children, among them my gg father John (Jean Baptiste) who married Mary above. John and Mary had 8 children, among whom one (last I heard) is still living in Saginaw, Bernice Lafayette Ward. Vincent Dashner, Jr., wife Rose Lanphier/Lanthier They came to Saginaw in 1878 from Oswego, NY. He worked as a cooper at CH Cobb. They had 15 children. John Lea, wife Mary Louise Schneider John arrived in Saginaw in 1864, m. in 1873. He was from Germany, came with 3 brothers, names unknown. John was a laborer but is also listed as having been a foreman for the Saginaw Ice & Coal Co. John and Mary had 6 children. Mary Louise's f. was Georg F.Schneider from Germany and Mary Meyer from Germany. They came to Saginaw when Mary Louise was 5. I have found Georg on the 1870 census. I have found quite a lot about these families, have most obituaries, etc. but still have a lot of gaps, especially with Lea, the brothers of John etc. Anyone who might have any information on these names or any suggestions on looking further I would greatly appreciate it. I have no immigration or passenger information on any. The Lea family has been especially difficult. Thank you so much. A. J. Clark

    3. Thanks, Elizabeth. Was Stuart Gross connected with the Saginaw News? Did Sam Carter also do the prints of old Saginaw homes? I have a collage of the historic buildings, but it is not signed and I can't remember if he was the artist. I remember the Carter Shop well! I believe they also had a small shop in the mall for a while. Nancy Researching: Kubik, Postle and Barthel

    2. Hey all - Does anyone have any ideas on how I could track down these two tidbits? Allegedly, my great grandfather, JW Symons, was Saginaw's mayor sometime prior to 1950, and about 1960 was inducted into some kind of agriculture hall of fame. Michigan's agriculture office is not aware of what the modern name of such a hall might be. Liz

    2. Dear Karen, We have John MOORE and Isabella REDMOND who were my great grandparents. He was foreman of the saw mills and traveled around the state. Isabella was a midwife. Their son was Jess John MOORE b1899 who worked in the mills as a youngster and then became an Engineer on the railroad. He worked for Pere Marquette and then Chesapeake & Ohio Railroads. He worked on the Ludington to Saginaw and Saginaw to Ohio then in town in Saginaw. Is there any connection to your MOORE'S that you are researching. Jan

    3. Thank you P. Hall, for the LDS Saginaw Death Index Film #. I asked the Saginaw Library to photocopy the obituaries that I found at their website, they said they could but it would take a long time, especially since I had a lot of them, and suggested I get the film from the LDS. Now I can order it, and do further research on my family. I am researching my grandmothers family (Alexander) that settled in Saginaw in the year 1900. Don Roberts Royal Oak, MI.
