    3. First of all, it confuses some, but St. Clair Shores is not in St. Clair County. You probably already know that it is in Macomb County. 2. Sharon, The grocery/butcher market was owned for many years by a family named Katter. Their son, Ken, and his wife, Jane, were close friends of mine. They might be able to help you with the history of that market and be able to fill you in on where your cheese factory was located. I will be returning to MI in the next three weeks and when I do, I will try to locate them if you would like. 3. I host a St. Clair County Marriages & Deaths website. The marriages listed are from the actual records from the county clerk. What I found curious was just how many bride and grooms came from Macomb County and across the river from Ontario, Canada. So, if you are looking for American marriages in Canada, don't discount Sarnia, Ontario as a likely place. 3. Hi Ralph Brandi, My grandparents met in Flint, Genesee Co., MI in 1912; but for some reason, went over to Windsor, Essex Co., Ontario just to get married. I've never actually checked to see what the requirements were at the time there; but in this case, a quick marriage with less requirements sounds like a good explanation. Happy Hunting, Phil Campbell ----- Original Message ----- From: Ralph Brandi To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 11:18 PM Subject: [MISAGINA] nearby marriage mills? Much of my family settled in Saginaw in the late 1800s before eventually migrating down to Detroit in the 1920s. I've done a lot of research in Saginaw records for my Brandi family members, and have found a number of cousins. But I've got one brick wall that's standing in my way. I can't find a marriage record for my great-grandparents. My great-grandfather, Ralph A. Brandi Sr., was born in San Potito Sannitico, Italy, and came to Saginaw with his parents Vincenzo and Maria around 1888. Ralph married Helen Prillwitz on 2 August 1890, which I found in the Saginaw marriage records on microfilm from the LDS. They divorced around 1909-10 (the records I found at the State Archives in Lansing were inconclusive on this), and sometime between 1910 and 1912, Ralph appears to have married Antonina Wisniewski. I say appears to have because Ralph fathered a child in 1912 with a woman the Saginaw county records recorded as Anna Washnaski, which seems to be a possible distortion of Antonina's name, although it's possible that this is another woman. Birth records for my grandfather in 1919 and his sister in 1918 definitely show Ralph as father and Antonina (or Antonia, or Anthonia, as she was alternately known) as the mother. Antonina is listed as having been born in Bay City in the early 1880s. I've looked at the birth records there, and there are more than one Antonina Wisniewski born in Bay City during those years, so I need to find out who her parents were. I've searched the Saginaw county marriage records available through the LDS and found nothing. Figuring that maybe they got married in the bride's hometown, I searched Bay county marriage records between 1907 and 1920 and found nothing. When I was at the State Archives in Lansing last summer, I searched the statewide index of marriages multiple times between 1907 and 1920 and found nothing. If they got married in Michigan, it doesn't appear to be in the records. I expect to search marriage records for surrounding jurisdictions to see if perhaps they travelled out of state to get married (given the divorce and some other circumstances, this doesn't seem unlikely). But before I start looking, I'd like to know if there were any places I should focus on first. I've been reading about "Gretna Green" marriage mills (named after a town in Scotland that catered to English people who wanted to marry quickly) that married all comers with few questions asked. Does anyone know of any such towns or counties near Michigan that would qualify for such a designation in around 1910-1912? I looked through the list archives on Rootsweb and didn't find anything about this. Antonina died in 1926 at the Traverse City State Hospital, and her death certificate was not much help. The "informant" on her certificate was the hospital records, and they didn't list her parents. Because of the circumstances of her death (the hospital was an insane asylum to which I'm told she was mistakenly committed by the family priest), it appears there was no obituary in the newspapers at the time, not that I could find anyway. With the lack of information on her parents on the death certificate, the marriage record seems the best way to break through this brick wall. Any suggestions on where to look would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks. Ralph Brandi

    3. Sharon, The corner of Court and Bond had St. Paul's Lutheran Church, two victorian era houses and a shop that housed a shade and Blind shop owned by a German couple (whose name I can't recall) through the 1930's and 40's. A block away there was a small commercial area a block long that housed a druggist, a hardware, Spaatz's bakery, the Court Theatre, a shoe repair shop and a small shop on the corner that had several businesses. Across the street were several other businesses including a feed store and butcher shop, and another drug store, and perhaps your cheese store. After 1950, all that began tyo change, and I don't know what's left. That was the closest business area to Court and Bond, though.

    2. G.Finn
    3. Hello all, I'm looking for information (or where I could look for information) about my Grandfather, OTTO GEIGER. In the early 1900's he owned a boat called Vietta.(It was named after his first wife, Vita) I believe he ran it on the Saginaw River possibly for parties and gambling. The story is said that it was traded for property in Detroit in 1921. Otto and his father, John Geiger Sr. also ran a saloon (325 Germania) and grocery store (439 Howard St.) in Saginaw. If anyone has any information on this boat (or Otto Geiger) I would love to hear about it. If anyone has any ideas of where I could look to find the information I would love to hear from you. Thank you in advance gail
