    1. Re: [MISAGINA] Saginaw Gear 1919
    2. Maria, We are searching in the same (foggy) area in Saginaw. Here's what I know about the formation of Saginaw Gear (an extract from Portrait and Biographical Record, Saginaw and Bay County, MI, 1892, Biographical Publishers, Chicago, 1892, pp.288-289): "James McGregor, Sr., learned boiler-making on The Clyde in Glascow, Scotland...Upon returning to Saginaw, Michigan before 1858, James founded, along with John L. Jackson, the boiler works known as "McGregor and Jackson'." From a history of Saginaw County, "In 1899, E. D. Church purchased of James McGregor [Jr.], his interest in the boiler works of McGregor and Jackson, and the manufacture of boilers, heaters, tanks, burners, plate and structural iron was added to their line." Following that acquisition, the firm went on to become a division of General Motors in 1910. In 1999, it continued to exist as Saginaw Gear. If there are employee records, this suggests that they would be held by General Motors. James McGregor, Jr. is my great-grandfather and my task is to find where he disappeared to in 1899. Prior to that time, he was an Alderman in the Sixth Ward, active in politics, a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was the spouse of Maude Hall. Keep me in mind if you find any information about your kin that might be of help. Thanks. Pat Hall Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

    2. Janet, Just re-read an obituary of Frederick Garner's stepfather. In 1991 he and wife, Linda, lived in Florida. You might check an on-line telephone directory for Florida to see if you can locate him. Mary Sue

    2. I not sure if it was a gospel hall, but St. Paul Church had a school on the corner of N. Porter and Cleveland. It was called St. Paul school and it went to the eighth grade I believe.

    2. Dear Judy: In response to your question, I have the following information: The 1950 Saginaw City Directory lists a "Gospel Hall" located at 500 N. Porter. The current Saginaw phone book shows a "Gospel Hall" located at 502 N. Porter I hope this information is helpful to your research. 2. I assume the "Fritzie" you are looking for is Frederick Garner. I looked in the 1998-99 Tri-Cities phone directory and didn't find him. Some possibilities to check from that directory are: John Garner, 3306 Glenbrook, Bay City John Garner, 6066 Trinklein, Saginaw John Garner, 3975 Homer Rd. John M. Garner, 3746 S. Homer, Merrill John G. Garner, IV, 2700 S. Center Rd., Saginaw, 249-1739 ** M & R. Garner, 2195 Shattuck, Saginaw ** Frederick (Fritzie) would be his uncle. This must be son of John G. Garner, III (Frederick's brother). Perhaps he can give you a lead, if his uncle is still living. That's the closest I can come. Good luck. If you find him will you let me know? I am tracking down all Garner descendents of James and Sarah Garner. Mary Sue [email protected]

    1. Re: [MISAGINA] West Side Church denomination
    2. Janet, Is it possible that your father in law is not remembering the cross streets? The was and still is a small white church that stands at the north east corner of Union and Stone Streets. When I was young it was called the Central Church of the Nazarene. I have no idea what the current name is. Also, I tried to locate any church structure at Union and N. Charles in a 1916 Atlas - with no success. Nor do I find it depicted on the 1896 version. I'll keep looking. If he remembers any other details please feel free to contact me. Tim Stark Naples, FL

    3. Thank you for your help! With that information, I went out on the Internet and read about the denomination the Church of God was and how it has changed since it began as a "religion" in the 1930's. List: The VERY helpful Saginaw County Internet Genealogy Services Center sent this as a reply to my query: ******* The 1950 Saginaw City Directory lists a "Church of God" located at 1832 N. Charles, the corner of Charles and Union. The pastor at that time was Louis E. Wagoner. The current Saginaw phone book shows a "First Church of God" located at 1834 N. Charles, The current Pastor is Dave Vannorman ******** Janet

I wasn't a member but every week, I think it was on Fridays, we neighborhood kids used to go. We would memorize a bible verse they gave us the week before and in return get a free candy. They had interesting bible stories "animated" on a felt "sticky" board, I remember one of the non-biblical stories was Pilgrim's Progess. It kept us off the streets one night a week!
