Where was the Bohemian Hall? Was it a church or a community center? Does it still exist? I am searching for the Bohemian neighborhood in Saginaw around 1918. Thanks, Maria [email protected] wrote: > > THOSE WERE THE DAYS. HOW ABOUT THE BOHEMIAN HALL? DORKS GROCERY AND KENTS > DRUG STORE? > JANET
Try the Hoyt Library on Jane Street in Saginaw. Maria [email protected] wrote: > > IS THERE SOME WAY I CAN GET SAGINAW NEWS INFO FROM 1949.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS. HOW ABOUT THE BOHEMIAN HALL? DORKS GROCERY AND KENTS DRUG STORE? JANET
Cook's Restaurant was at the corner of 6th and Wadsworth where 6th St made a jog to the west for a few feet before continuing north. There was also a gas station at the corner and Packard's Bar. There was possibly also a barber shop. In later years the second , larger Vescio's Grocery store was also located at the corners, after moving across the street from the original location where Mama and Papa Vescio started at. This was before the grocery chain spread out all over Saginaw and the area around town. For years and years the restaurant served the best hot beef sandwiches and the best fish dinners in Saginaw. Hi [email protected] Yes, I went to Sacred Heart for 12 years. I graduated in 1958. How about you. I went to Kindergarten at Jones School. Did you? We moved from Saginaw to Hollywood, FL in 1972. We do go back home to Saginaw every couple of years to visit relatives. How big a restaurant was Cooks and what was it like? Liz, Hollywood, FL
Dear Maria, We are still thinking along the same lines. While I have been to the Hoyt, I am planning to drive up to Saginaw on Monday because I've never checked resources at the Court House. (I have a Gonyea death certificate I want to see.) I've read the 1900 census and he's not in Michigan (you can get that off the shelves at the Library of Michigan in Lansing). Is there anything I can check for you in Saginaw if I go? Pat
IT WAS ON THE CORNER OF 6TH AND WADSWORTH. YOU MUST HAVE GONE TO SCARED HEART. RIGHT? I WENT TO TRINITY LUTHERAN ON 9TH AND CHERRY. IT WAS THERE IN THE 50'S YOU MAY BE TO YOUNG.

IS THERE SOME WAY I CAN GET SAGINAW NEWS INFO FROM 1949.
Dear Anl: In response to your question, I have the following information. The 1950 Saginaw City Directory show a "Cooks Confectionary" located at 425 6th Street, between Fitzhugh and Wadsworth. I'm sure that the building is no longer there, due to the I675 expressway. I hope this information is helpful to your research. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER COOKS RESTAURANT ON 6TH STREET IN SAGINAW.
Dear Pat: My daughter and I visited the Hoyt Library in Saginaw a few years ago. The librarians were knowledgeable and very helpful. Email them and ask if the city directories for 1898 and 1899 are among their holdings. Back then, city directories gave the occupation and the address of a person. If James' wife was a widow, the directory should say "wid of James". The Hoyt also has an online index of Saginaw County obituaries for some years. The librarian found a 1910 obituary for me. The people at the Saginaw County Courthouse were also helpful. We found an index for property transfers in the 1910-20 range. I am sure that they have the index for 1899,1900, etc. Also try the Detroit Library's index to the MI 1900 census. If he was still in MI, he should be listed. Of course, if you find him in the index, you then have to order the census reel, wait 3-6 weeks, use the viewer at the library, scroll down thousands of names and then try to read the illegible handwriting of the census-taker. I would suggest signing up for membership in Ancestry.com. They have the 1900 census online. You could find him in minutes. You might find a day spent at the Hoyt very helpful in determining whether he "disappeared" or died. I know there is a Jim Koski who lived in Thomas Township in Saginaw County, MI. He was the Drain Commissioner in the early 1970's. Judy, Good idea. I just downloaded the address of the secretary of the Saginaw Masonic Lodge. You are the first person to remember a McGregor in Saginaw. I am intrigued by your reference to the intersection of Lee and South Harrison because that's four blocks from 109 Wayne, where James Jr. and his family lived in 1880...all industrial now. Thanks for your help. Pat
ARE THERE ANY KOSKI'S FROM SAGINAW OUT THERE.
I went to the Gospel Hall too. The pastor picked up my brother and I and Other children in the neighborhood, and drove us. This was in the 50's. We had graduated to slide movies. And perfect attendance got you your own Bible. I don't know what denomination it was though. Besides the candy bar when leaving, I particularly enjoyed singing the songs. My mother worked at the old Saginaw Gun Plant during World War II. Her name was Rose, so every time I would hear the song "Rosie The Riveter" I thought they were singing about my Mother. Before she started to work in the plant, I recall that she always wore a housedress, everyday. After she started working at the plant, I remember seeing her wear pants for the first time. WOW, how times have changed. Thanks for the memory. Patricia
Pat, You mention that your James McGregor Jr was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Have you contacted the Masons to ask if they have record of his having transferred membership to another Lodge or if they have record of his having died and where? Usually the family will request Masonic rites at the funeral. Also, my ex-husband went to school with and graduated with a Jim McGregor and they were in the first graduating class of Arthur Hill Technical High School c1958 or 59 which was separate from Arthur Hill High School and stood at the corner of Michigan, Mackinaw and Gratiot. I forget the name of the street that Jim McGregor lived on but it was near the intersection of Lee and S Harrison going towards Wheeler, maybe Division Street or thereabouts.
