I have not been following this thread closely since I am more interested in the Freeland area than Saginaw proper; however, I did just see the reference to Clark's Drug Store. My brother-in-law was the last owner of these stores. He retired. Karen
Hey, ditto on Mooneys! Bad things are happening here in saginaw, seems like all the good places are being destroyed. How ya been?
All in the Saginaw area .. Let me know. Cornelia Symons (Reikowsky) 1888 - 1892 I think we spoke some time ago when I had less in my records. Although it seems improbable, I'm coming to think these families are not connected. I don't have anyone unaccounted for in an spporpriate time period to be her spouse, nor do I have the children. This would be the first Saginaw area Symons I can't connect - but I suppose it was inevitable! Liz
I remember that there were three drug stores on that corner, but can't remember the name of the third one. I do remember that they rotated being open on Christmas Day (and Sundays) for emergencies. Mary Sue
Tim, Do you remember Gase Bakery on the other side of Michigan & Genesse? My Aunt Anna worked there, 1940s, and I still vividly remember the aroma of fresh baked bread when we would walk by the area. What was the name of the railroad depot across the street? I remember boarding a train there when we took a trip to Ohio. Is the depot also gone? Patricia
Patricia, Oh, yes... Mooney's is now history. Sad commentary. Also, to all of the people reminising about Clark Drug Store and the MI/Genesee area... What about the old Grube Drugs Store on the same corner? Had doctors' offices upstairs and some other shops too. Maybe someone will remember what else was there, Tim Naples, FL
Thanks for the updates and comments on Michigan & Genesse. A few weeks ago, my husband and I spent a few days in Saginaw, and, while driving through the West side of town, did I see what I thought I saw?????? What happened to Mooney's ice cream store? Did I see a new Rite Aid store on that property? Please tell me the old ice cream store was not torn down for a new drug store. Ooooooooooo the memories of taking our children over to the ice cream shop on those beautiful warm summer night. Patricia
You did it.! Lots to read on this board! Kevin

Dear Liz: They usually just ask for a donation. Bonnie
The Hoyt Library staff is very willing to make copies of the actual obituaries for you. That would be great - could someone point me toward the fees I need to send? Liz
Possibly, I worked first at Woolworth's and the American Optical in the Bearinger Bldg. I stopped to have first child in 1960. Joyce

Savoy was across the street from Franklin Theater in the middle of the block. Joyce
hi It was called the Savoy and had the best Hot Beef Sandwiches. Joyce

The Temple Theater building still stands, but the Franklin Theater building was torn down back in the 60's or 70's. ---------- > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: [MISAGINA] GOOD OLE DAYS > Date: Tuesday, May 08, 2001 3:50 PM > > HOW ABOUT THE TEMPLE THEATER AND FRANKLIN IN THE LATE 40'S AND 50'S. If someone has access, I'm looking for an obit that ran sometime around the first or second week of Jan 1944 for Ora Wallace Symons and one for her son, Robert Wallace Symons in 1946 (he died in Italy) Liz
The Bohemian Hall was on the SW corner of 12th and Wadsworth. It burned to the ground in the 1960s. I still haven't gotten to the library to look up the actual date. I know it was before 1965 as we moved from the neighborhood then. I watched it burn. It was only a block and a half from our house. We attended many weddings there. It was quite a spectacular fire. I'm the one trying to collect oral history on this and find and early photo. I have confirmed that a tavern was opened at the same address by my ancestor, Joesph Sklapsky, and his partner later killed himself. In the 1940's a Czech Society reapplies for a liquor license at that address and then I've been informed here of the fire. (Which put paid to my feeble hope of archival records being in the hands of the current owners) If anyone has anything on it or comments about it, remember me! There's a pic of Joe Sklapsky at my currently out of date site. Liz The Saginaw Symons
Yes, they are correct, the Temple is still there. I play with the Saginaw Eddy Band, which will be celebrating 75 years this summer. Many volunteers have done much work on the theater and restored many things. It is a beautifull place to play. At the Christmas concert we have poinsettias all across the stage and beautiful lighting. It is a free concert and usually a full house. Wonderful. However, with the new people taking over, these wonderful events may be gone. The new owner says he is going to work with the Organ Club and volunteers and keep things going, but it is in doubt. The Eddy Band will not be using the theater this summer as far as we know so far. The city of Saginaw made a huge mistake in not taking the theater over. We had a vote today for millage to keep the civic center going. Many feel if it goes down, the death knoll for Saginaw will ring. Believe me, Saginaw is nothing at all like it used to be. The Jack Rabbit sign was saved due to some great effort by some wonderful people. The Hoyt Library was restored and is gorgeous. Fortunately the Castle post office was saved by the Historical society. Also, one other note. The St John the Baptist Center is in Carrollton. It is right across the street from the elementary school in Carrollton.
