To Gillie357 I have no doubt about the age of the old saloon. But, how did you determine that? Tim Naples
The Schuch Hotel was run by the late Senator John Schuch who was also a former Sheriff of Saginaw County, He was quite a collector and the walls were lined with his collection of beer glasses and "Toby Jugs." In December 1949, my grandfather Wilfred G. Shannon, who was an intimate friend of Schuch's, traded a Toby Jug to Schuck for a piece of Hobnailed glass. The jug was considered "the largest in the world" and was crafted in the likeness of Daniel O'Connell, a well-known Irish antagonist, also a confidant of my great-great-great-grandfather Shannon. The jug sat on a ledge until 1973 when one of the drunken idiots snatched it from the ledge and ran out the door. The owner of Zinger's chased him and the mug was smashed. There's still quite a collection hanging on the walls. Family lore has it that grandpa lost the family farm in a card game in an upper room, but that's another story. Senator Schuch appointed one of my uncles to Annapolis. Zingers was originally the Shook hotel , It was a very good place to dine for many years . It started in 1868 .
I just looked back into the Saginaw County Atlas, and I find that the site was the Benson Hotel in the 1870s - just in case your interested. It's been around for a long time. Tim
Mary, Your mother probably took you to the Schuch Hotel at 301 N. Hamilton, close to the Saginaw River. The Schuch was a Saginaw institution, well known for serving pails of peanuts (in the shells). Patrons would toss the schucked shells all over the floor - while downing large quantities of lager... It was a great evening whenever you stopped by. It was owned and operated for a long time by Bill Furlo. I don't know when the old place changed hands as I left Saginaw in 1980. Hope this helps. Tim Stark Naples, FL
When I visited Saginaw in November, 1999, my mom (a Saginaw native) took us on a tour of places that are significant to our family. She pointed out a building that now says Zingger's Saloon. It was on the west side -- we never ventured to the east side on that visit -- I think it's north of Court St. and close to the river. What would this building have been used for between about 1930 and 1950? I seem to recall them having had a relation named "Deewain" in the Merrill area. An elderly family member, before he passed into the great beyond, shared the legend with our clan. I believe some of the other McCurlee clan members were named Lurl, Teddy (a politician of some sort), Burl (a lumberjack in northern Michigan), and possiblly an acquaintance nicknamed "Bubdos" who had some connection to the Coor's Brewing empire. I hope this helps. Best wishes for a successful search for these folks. If I think of anything else I'll send it to you. Take care, Kevin

Has anyone checked with Bubba McCurlee on this? I understand their whole clan started in the Merrill area and spread out around Shields area when they heard polygamy was prevalent there in the village's early years. I don't have a good address for them as the last I heard was they were a traveling family band. KO
Yes, there is a Robert Shields who reports the weather on channel 11, Toledo, Ohio. We Temperance Michigan residents watch the Toledo TV channels.
I grew up just north of Swan Creek Road and and M-52. As far as I know Shields is not a town or villiage. I may be wrong but Hemlock isn't either. With Hemlock, I believe it may have something to do with their Charter. Maybe someone on the list can explain all this. As a child I remember many trips to Shields to visit the Meat Market where mother purchased most of the meat for the family. Joe Whelton, the long time manager of Tri City Airport and Ed Murphy his assistant both listed Shields as their homes. It is in Thomas township but is definitely a spot on the map of Michigan, M46 about 7 miles west of Saginaw. Jerry Stevens
IT IS NOT A TOWN OR VILLAGE IT IS JUST WHAT PEOPLE CALL IT. IT WAS NEVER INCORPORATED AS EITHER!
