    1. [MISAGINA] (MISAGINA) Robinson- Saginaw, MI
    2. Gayle, On these mid-1800 ancestors, it is usually helpful to know their religion, as those records always give the parents names. What religion was your ROBINSON? Carolyn

    1. [MISAGINA] Robinson, Saginaw Michigan
    2. Folkers
    3. Edward ROBINSON, born 1858 possibly in Saginaw, Michigan. Parents unknown. Siblings unknown. Married Belle KENAN MCCRONE Nov. 7, 1885 in Berrien County, Michigan. Edward ROBINSON may also be known as John E. ROBINSON. I have found his name listed both ways in various census and marriage records located online. He died sometime before 1928, as his wife's death record lists her as a widow. A record found at the LDS site shows Ed Robinson born in Saginaw, but the 1900 Berrien County census lists him as Edward J. ROBINSON, born in Canada, with his parents born in Ireland. A birth record of his son sent to me shows him as John E. ROBINSON, born in Michigan, and lists his occupation as farmer. So ,I have conflicting information as to his actual name, and his actual place of birth, as well as no parents or siblings. So, the first thing I am looking for is some type of record that shows him actually born in Saginaw. Does someone have access to that type of info, or know where I might locate that type of record? I'm hoping that once I figure out where he was actually born, I can work back from there. Thank you. Gayle

    1. [MISAGINA] How To Write A Successful Query
    2. Subject: How To Write A Successful Query The Internet has many sources for you to submit queries to mailing lists and query boards, however the information you receive from others will largely depend on how well you communicate with others..... in other words writing a clear and concise query. Which of the queries below do you think would get a better response? (A) Looking for information on John McCarthy and wife Mary Hogan McCarthy. Supposedly came from Tipperary, came to NY. (B) John McCARTHY and wife Mary HOGAN McCarthy emigrated to Brooklyn NY c. 1850-1860. Family story is they came from Clonmel area of Tipperary/Waterford. They had a son John Henry born in NY area between 1856-1861, he married Mary Ellen GOUGH in Brooklyn in 1886. Mary Ellen was from Clonmel. Witnesses to the marriage were Patrick and Ellen HOGAN. Family story is that these families lived near each other in Clonmel area. Am interested in finding other McCarthy's and Hogans in the Clonmel area. If you answered (B) you are correct! Example A did not tell enough about the family to allow others to know what the person wanted. Also, "Looking for information" is just about the worst thing you can say in a genealogy query... WHAT information are you looking for? Be specific! I see people who write this in queries all the time, who get replies from people who are trying to be helpful, but who then get upset because "I already knew that" or "that's not what I was looking for". Example B told what I knew, where I got the information, and what I wanted to find out. It was also brief, included enough info, but not every detail of their lives. If anyone is interested enough to contact you, further details can be given to them privately. The 3 basic things a good query should cover are: (1) Tell us what you know -- that includes what you have searched, where you got your information from, dates, locations. This way people won't tell you to search a certain census or other resource if you have already done so. (2) Tell us what you don't know -- I don't know his parents names, I don't know when he came to the US, I don't know if he was naturalized. (3) Tell us what you WANT to know -- otherwise it's just a stab in the dark. Probably the worst thing you can say is "looking for information on...". WHAT information? Be specific, do you want to know how to get naturalization papers for them, how to find them on a ship list, how to find their parents? Here are some other hints... **Use your subject line wisely. Put surnames and locations in subject lines. Especially on large lists, and in digest form, many people only scan the subject line. Putting something like "Help" in a subject line probably won't get you much of it. **Put surnames in all caps in subject lines and the first time you write them in the body of a query. **Don't write in all caps. Besides being bad netiquette, its hard to read. **Don't write in all lower case either! **Separate information into paragraphs. Don't send one big blob of information and expect people to sift through it. The neater it is the more likely someone will read it. **Sending too much information is as bad as sending too little. Don't send your entire gedcom file in an email. Don't write the entire history of your family in an email. Just pick one aspect and deal with one thing at a time. **Don't get "cutesy" with adding smiley faces and exclamation marks. **Think of writing a query or an e-mail as a letter to someone you don't know. First impressions, even in emails, count! Good Luck

    1. Re: [MISAGINA] Looking for Tierney in Saginaw
    2. Hi again I did forward your email to my daughter's friend and I will send her this one also. Don't know why she has not responded. I came across the following article today at the library. I was a book of the front pages of memorable days of the Bay City Times. Date: 28 Oct 1929 It was an article of the ceremony of the opening of River Road as it connected Bay City and Saginaw. At the ceremony, they had a ribbon cutting dedication. The man for the Saginaw side was a Mr. Harry J. Tierney. His grandchildren held the ribbon. Their names were: Jimmie Pearsall (5 yrs old) and Patricia Slattery (4 yrs old). I thought you would find this interesting. If the Bay City Times had this small article, then I'm sure the Saginaw News did too. Would you like me to look it up next time I go to Hoyt Library in Saginaw? Shelly

    3. I have been working with some of the sextons in the Gratiot county to get the graves and burial records updated, and chalk is the only thing they allow on the grave stones. It is softer than the stones so will not damage, and organic. It washes off during the next rain. They ask that nothing else be used to read stones to bring out the letters. 2. Carolyn, I have been following the Cemetery Photograph Project and commend you and your team for the photographs. Until I saw the remarks today about the quantity of chalk being used and at least one concern, I hadn't thought about the materials other than the digital cameras that were being used. At a Genealogy meeting of the Manasota Genealogy Group in Bradenton Florida, we heard a speaker on photographing and preserving gravestones: Do's and Don'ts. Attached is a link (followed by the URL) of an association in Massachusetts that has been dedicated to these issues since 1977, with 1200 members worldwide. Here are some of their Do's and Don'ts, but with a project of the size you are undertaking, I think it would be time well spent to read their articles and educate your team. * Don't use detergents, soaps, vinegar, bleach, or any other cleaning solutions on the stone, no matter how mild! * Don't use shaving cream, chalk, graphite, dirt, or other concoctions in an attempt to read worn inscriptions. Using a large mirror to direct bright sunlight diagonally across the face of a gravemarker casts shadows in indentations and makes inscriptions more visible. * Don't use stiff-bristled or wire brushes, putty knives, nail files, or any metal object to clean or to remove lichen from the stone; Soft natural bristled brushes, whisk brooms, or wooden sticks are usually OK if used gently and carefully * Don't attempt to remove stubborn lichen. Soft lichen may be thoroughly soaked with plain water and then loosened with a gum eraser or a wooden popsicle stick. Be gentle. Stop if lichen does not come off easily. * Don't use spray adhesives, scotch tape, or duct tape.
