Plainwell Formerly of Grand Haven Passed away Sunday, January 9, 2005 in Plainwell. Mr. Meier was born May 8, 1915 in Wyandotte, Michigan, son of Henry and Johanna (Lange) Meier. Bill is survived by two sons, William Vyn and Nicholas; and four grandchildren, John Andrew, Katrina, Elizabeth and Kathleen. He attended Lutheran grade school and Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, and graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. Bill served 4 ? years in the military during World War II, rose to rank of Captain and assignment with the Sixth Cavalry Mechanized Reconnaissance Squadron in Europe as Headquarters Commandant. He moved to Grand Haven in 1946, and was in the floor covering business until 1968, at which time he accepted a position with North Ottawa Community Hospital as Purchasing Agent and retired in 1982. As a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grand Haven, Bill served on the Boy Scout Committee, school board, board of Trustees and the building! committee. Bill was a member of the American Legion from 1948, served as Captain of the local National Guard during re-organization and activation 1946-1947. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce with service on the Board of Directors from 1961-1964, and was also a former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club. Bill was appointed to the Ottawa County Selective Service Board in 1966 and served as chairman until 1976, at which time the board was de-activated. He served on the American Red Cross Board and also was a Red Cross representative to the United Way. From 1981 to 1993 Bill was a volunteer with Hospice. Remembrance donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in Grand Haven or Hospice of Grand Haven. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
