Alexander was a shipbuilder, worked with Thomas Kirby in the Kirby Shipyards in Grand Haven. He was a member of the Detroit Masonic Lodge No. 2, Monroe Lodge Chapter No.1, then Grand Haven Lodge 139. He married Catherine Duff Patterson in 1867. Their children were William James, Cora Ann, Alexander Ford and Scott Patterson. Alexander, Catherine and son Scott are buried in Lake Forest Cemetery, Grand Haven Township, Ottawa.
