Born in West Olive, he resided in the area his entire life. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II, and owned and operated Mannes Paint and Body Shop for several years, and later worked at Hope College and First of America Bank. He was a member of Harlem Reformed Church where he had served as a deacon. Surviving are his wife, Hazel (TALSMA); children, Judy and Rick Holtgrave of Coldwater, Kris and Dave De Kraker, Jan and Paul Mathews, Curt and Lonnie Berkompas, all of Holland, Marl and Jack Bosch of Grant, and Jill Berkompas and Gregg Hill of Holland; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, Irene and Jim Reimersma of Nunica, LaVerne and Geneva Berkompas of West Olive, Lois and Russ Hulst, Carolyn and Bill Overway, and Joan and Paul Van Heuvelen, all of Holland; in-laws, Norma Schwander, and Genevieve and Lawrence Howard and Bern Douma, all of Holland; aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Harlem Reformed Church, with the Rev. John Nyitray officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Northwood Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes, 295 Douglas Ave. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Holland.
