    1. ([MIOSCODA])Memorial Day
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Sorry to start another thread of messages so close to a Surname Shout Out but with the lists being down the first part of the year it threw my scheduling off. Hope you don't mind... With this being the Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it would it be interesting to post one ancestor we have in our family trees who served in one of the many wars and battles we fought in US History. Obviously it has to be an ancestor from this county. :) Give a brief biography of that person including the unit and war he or she was in, a POW, injuries, plus the usual genealogical stuff. Thanks in advance and have a safe weekend! Rick B Admin

He appears in findagrave.com, though note that only shows the apparent grave of an infant daughter. I did some further internet searching. Father, Charles H. Burpee Birth: 1857 Death: 1936 Family links at the cemetery site: Children: Hattie Burpee (1885 - 1886)* *Calculated relationship Burial: Big Creek Township Cemetery Luzerne, Oscoda County, Michigan, USA Plot: C-2-2 Searching in the link to the cemetery at this site shows other burials in the same cemetery. Searching for "Burpee" shows a Merril B. Burpee, April 18, 1906 to January 17, 1989, whose DOB could make him possibly a son or grandson. NOTE: Spelling of first name shows only one "L". Last known address was apparently Rose City, Michigan. There is a family tree cached at http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:VYCzdDwI6BQJ:familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/i/l/Susan-L-Wilson/ODT17-0005.html &cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us which shows a son with the same name, Charles Henry Burpee, and his children. That record looks like this: 8) Charles Henry Burpee b: 20 Mar 1857 d: 1936 Gretta Caroline Hager b: 18 Jul 1872 d: 23 Aug 1927 9) Charles Henry Burpee b: 23 Nov 1903 in Luzern, Big Creek twp. Burpee b: 15 Jun 1910 d: 14 Aug 1989 Clifford Schanck There is a chance that Charles may have died in Bay City, Bay County, MI, as one record shows that--it would not have been unusual for him to have been transported to a hospital there shortly before his demise, though his home was in Rose City, as that is one of the closest major medical facilities. There is an Alfred E. Poppenger, age 81, possible husband of Joanne Burpee Poppenger, deceased September 13, 2004. Joann Poppenger, age 75, has an address shown at 213 Westbrook, Whitmore Lake, Michigan 48189, phone 734 449 7348, email joanne.poppenger@yahoo.com. Cannot be certain if all this is current. There is an address/phone for Caroline Charline Shepherd, age 66, at 806 Burgess St, Martinsville, VA 24112-1535, email jcshep@charter.net, husband Johnnie Calvin Shepherd. Cannot be certain if this is current but property records show she is the owner and paid property taxes in 2012. It appears that Clifton Willard (alt spelling Wilard) Burpee died at age 69 in 2011. There is a Donald A. Burpee, age 73, who has a former address that is the same as a former address for Joanne Poppenger in Ann Arbor, whose only address info I find is 8199 Owens St., Buena Park, CA 90621, phone (714) 670-8330. Again, cannot be certain if this is currently correct! I hope this might be of some help, as I did not find an obituary. It would probably be necessary to find the old files from the former newspaper for Oscoda County (maybe in the Oscoda County library in Mio, Michigan) as I believe it is defunct and there is a newer one, the Oscoda County Herald. There is an Ogemaw County Herald whose masthead says it dates to 1878, and if Charles H. Burpee had Rose City (in Ogemaw County) as his last home, there may have been an obituary in their files. Check at the public library in Mio.  There are several genealogical records there also.  The Steiner museum north of Fairview on M-33 has been publishing newsletters, each of which has had historical stories relevant to the area.  Penny Ettinger ----- Original Message ----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com To: MIOSCODA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2013 9:43:43 PM Subject: Re: [MIOSCODA] Crago; Donley; Buchannan; Lewis  Big Creek Township;        Oscoda; Michigan This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Interesting if the LDS bunch was allowed to film at the courthouse, as I was told a few years ago that I could not use my camera on the books.  Every time a record is longhand copied, there is the potential for miscommunications or errors of transcription.  ----- Original Message ----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com To: MIOSCODA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2013 7:34:49 PM Subject: Re: [MIOSCODA] Crago; Donley; Buchannan; Lewis  Big Creek Township;        Oscoda; Michigan This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
