    1. [MIOAKLAN] Tornblom/Nielsen - Holly, MI

    3. My great-grandfather, Adolphus Gustav Nielson, was born 31 Mar 1835 in Stockholm, Sweden. He immigrated to Michigan (I don't know by what ship or by what route) and settled in Holly. It has been handed down through the family that he changed his name to Tornblom after he learned his trade of tailoring. I do not know if that was before he immigrated or after. I do know that his wife, Albertina Peterson Tornblom (born 28 Dec 1837 in Sweden) immigrated about a year later with 3-5 of their children. I think one child may have been born/died in crossing. My grandfather, Albert Tornblom was born 24 April 1875 in Holly. The first child born in the US. Other children were born later, some of whom may also have been born in Holly, and probably were. I also have the following Naturalization information that I have not followed up on: 1. Ruth Kennedy, editor, Naturalization Records for Oakland County, Michigan, 1827-1906 (Oakland County. Genealogical Society, 1985.), 5 Jan 2001, Email Correspondence. Mary Hosteny, ChBelinda@cs.com, February 5, 2001, email correspondence. "TORNBLOM, Anders Gustaf filed Declaration of Intent on 17 Apr 1880 (4:152)d SWE The numbers in parentheses are courthouse liber and page number. d = declaration of intent. (never completed naturalization records) Source: NATURALIZATION RECORDS FOR OAKLAND COUNTY, MICHIGAN, 1827-1906. Pub. by the Oakland Co. Gen. Society, Ruth Kennedy, editor, 1985." Can anyone tell me what other information might I obtain from looking at the Declaration of Intent? Does anyone know how I might find out 1) when/where he changed his name? 2) how he came to the US? 3) how he might have ended up in Holly? 4) where in Holly he lived? (I suspect that he may not have owned a house) 5) where his tailoring business might have been? 6) how long he may have lived in Holly? My grandfather moved to Lansing at some point in his life, met his wife there, and that is where my mother was born. At some point Adolphus and Albertina separated, although I do not think that they divorced, due tu Adolphus' alcholism, according to my mother. She remembered their separate visits to her home when she was young. An interesting side story: Their (Alolphus and Albertina) eldest daughter, Hulda Eugenia, married Robert H. Benjamin, the original blacksmith on Mackinac Island. The Benjamin family still owns property and stores on the Island. Caroline Landrum Snowpeople fall from Heaven unassembled. 3. Hi Caroline! I had a look in the CD with Swedish emigrants and I think I've found your family: Albertina TÖRNBLOM (with umlaut over the first 'o') - 37 years old from the city of Karlstad in the county (län) of Värmland. She left the port of Göteborg 9 May 1874 for Detroit with her children Anna 4 y.o., Frans 7 y.o., Axel 9 y.o. and Hulda 11 y.o. I do not find find any Adolf Gustaf Nilsson Törnblom. But according to the Declaration of Intent your refer to he seems also to have been know as 'Anders Gustaf' and I do find this man: Anders Gustaf Tornlund (without umlaut) 35 y.o. leaving the county of Värmland (no parish noted) on April 12 1872. Destination: New York. I hope this will help! /Håkan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Caroline Landrum" <caroline_landrum@yahoo.com> To: <MIOAKLAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 5:30 PM Subject: [MIOAKLAN] Tornblom/Nielsen - Holly, MI > My great-grandfather, Adolphus Gustav Nielson, was born 31 Mar 1835 in Stockholm, Sweden.
