I'm hoping someone on this list has discovered someone who was an inmate in the State Industrial Home for Girls located in Adrian Twp., Lenawee, MI in the 1910 time period. While checking the 1910 census records for my many ancestors and collateral line cousins who lived in Michigan, I came across a name and the facts fit her as a single girl; however, the twist is, the census record says that she is "married" and has been for a year, yet she is only 15 years old. Her direct family line came from NJ and settled in Oakland County, but two brothers moved to Shiawassee county. The oldest daughter of one of these brothers was born in 1894. It is this daughter whom I am not finding in the family with the rest of the children, but find one of a similar name, age, and parent facts that matches the 15 year old in the State Industrial Home for Girls that says she is married for 1 year with no children. This is my opinion: I believe she might have been unwed, pregnant, and was perhaps having a problem with the law and/or her parents and that because of this, she was placed under the state care until the baby was born if she was, in fact, pregnant. She might have gone into the "system" stating she was married, but I don't think so because the name in the record matches a girl of the same name and it is not her married name but her maiden name. Therefore, I suspect she really wasn't married. As I said, she was only 15 years old in the census. The only way I see her having the same name as she was born with is that she married a fella with the same surname. I have found that situation when doing other family lines, so I know it is possible. Does anyone know how one would become an inmate in this home for girls in the 1910 time period? Was it through the state correctional system? Or could parents send their kids there who were incorrigible or pregnant? Could a pregnant girl go there on her own in order to avoid embarassment of being unwed and pregnant in her local community? How long would they stay in this home for girls - was it only months, or years, or till a baby was born? Was it a home for unwed mothers? Does it stll exist today? If it does, can someone tell me what the address might be that I might write to get more information? if it does not exist, can some one tell me if the state archives has the records? Christie Trapp
