Thanks to this list I had a wonderful (and successful) time at the Oakland County Court House yesterday. I spent 2 hours and got some interesting information which I now will follow up on. The staff were very helpful, to show me where I could work and the books I could look at for the information I was looking for. Now about Newspapers in Oakland County. The people "I am chasing" lived in Rochester area in the 1930 forward to 1977. I went to the Rochester Public Library and read the Rochester papers for the time period. Found two obits. I looked for an obit for September 1940 and could not find an entry. The man had lived in Rochester but at the time of death was in Waterford, MI. Probably a nursing home. His wife was listed as living in Birmingham, MI. Went to the Birmingham Public Library and they had their newspaper for the time period, but the quality was very poor. Reviewed the week after the death twice and could not find it. There were only a couple for each week, strange for a large community to have so few deaths. Are there any other suggestion where to find an obit for September 1940, for a person who had lived most of their adult lives in the Rochester area yet died in Waterford and wife was living in Birmingham at the time? That would put the 'cherry on the search'. Susanne
Susanne, The Waterford area library has a wonderful genealogy department. You may try looking there. They are on line at: http://www.waterford.lib.mi.us/adult/agenealo.htm I would also suggest that you try the Oakland Press or the Pontiac Press for an obituary of someone who lived in the Waterford area. I highly recommend the Waterford Library site - its FULL of Northern Oakland County information. The Oakland County Pioneer & Historical Society maintains an obituary file that may or may not be of use. It is indexed to some degree. They are at: http://wwnet.net/%7Eocphs/index.html They do charge a fee for lookups and library use if not a member. And last but not least, next time you are going to be in Birmingham, drop a line and you can stop by for a cup of tea or something! Hope this helps!
