Would anyone want to hazard a guess as to what cemetery somebody in South Lyon Township would be buried in who died in the 1840's? I was thinking of hunting for the S. Lyon cemetery (on West Lake Rd. off of 10 mile?), but a photo shows the sign out front saying "Founded in 1879". I am looking for the graves of two ancestors, Orilla WHIPPLE Chase (wife of Bela Chase who bought the first 3 land grants in Oakland County & whose household is on 1830 Oakland County census) and Abel Chase (Bela's father who died Aug 16 1843 and is also on the 1830 census).

There is also a cemetery on Milford Road and Grand River Rds that is quite old. Also there is a Cemetery called Rose Cemetery which is at 11 mile and Griswold that is in South Lyon. I don't see any other cemeteries on my Oakland county Map in the area. This maps lists all of the Cemeteries and those are the only ones besides the one you mention. Bonnie, There's an old cemetery at Eight Mile and Pontiac Trail that is surrounded by private property on all sides. Two sisters spearheaded a cleanup campaign a few years ago and kept records of the tombstones. The earliest tombstone is 1837. The South Lyon Herald ran several articles on the clean up campaign. The cemetery is actually located in Salem Township in Washtenaw County, but is not far from South Lyon. Names mentioned in the newspaper article were: Reverend Ira Mather OLDS, Alonzo OLDS, John PARKS, Sarah Maria Walton ROGERS, James D. HOOD, Catherine HOOD, Daniel HERRICK, and Rufus HERRICK. The sisters have presented two books of research to the Salem Area Historical Society, according to the article. I checked my copy of the "History of Salem Township," written in 1976, and found additional names which include Phoebe YOUNG, wife of Iram OLDS; and Harriet BAKER, wife of Rev. Iram OLDS.
