Rose, Probably your inquirer has in mind Addison Township, Oakland County, Michigan. The highest section number would be 36. An archaic term for Township was Town of. Referring to the book "The Addison Album" Barbara D. Stafford author; page 8 map "Addison Township Original Government Land Entries" I see Benjamin McGregor 1832, David Tanner 1831 & 1837, Moses Snover 1833, Aristorchus Willey 1831, Aristerchus Willey 1853. The print is quite small and this is what the spelling seems to be. The index has Artistorchus Willey. Page 5 "1831 saw the east half of section 36, one hundred and sixty acres, purchased by Artistorchus Willey and David Tanner." Hope this helps, Ann Alamogordo, NM USA ----- Original Message ----- From: Rosie C To: MIOAKLAN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, September 19, 2003 5:24 PM Subject: [MIOAKLAN] Town of Addison Hi members of MI Oakland, Someone has asked me to locate info about residents of Sec. 86, Town of Addison, Oakland Co., MI. for the year 1833. Hi, all! Thanks, everyone, for all the input about how to get records from the State mental institutions! I've gotten lots of good ideas for follow-up. Ann, Mary, et al- In the 1980's I was allowed access to the records at the Ionia State Mental Hospital for a particular surname. I do not have the correspondence that I initiated but I think I wrote to the MI. State Dept. of Health in Lansing and inquired about the procedure. They answered my inquiry & then sent a letter granting me permission to view the records. I went to Lansing with the letter in hand & it may have been the MI. State Library or the Archives bldg. I just don't recall now. Upon showing them the letter of permission they brought a book to me with a list of patients with the surname I was researching. None of the info. fit the criteria for the person I was interested in but if I had found that person on the list they then would have given me access to the records. Hello Ann, Karen, et al; I think that sometimes things that happened a hundred years ago or so went unexplained, especially when it came to the mentally infirm. It is entirely possible that there was no obit, due in part to the 'scandal' and 'stigma' that would be attached to the family by the obit itself. Very few upstanding families would want it to be commonly known that there was something 'wrong' with the family, so to speak. To a lessor extent, we have, in the recent past, done some of the same things. IE. I remember that as a kid, if a woman was pregnant, that 'pregnant' wouldn't be said outloud, especially if the woman was unwed. It would be said in a whispered "She's 'PG'". There are many things that could have happened in any State Hospital that would not be allowed out in the 'free world' such as labodimies (sp?) and shock treatments, to name a couple. Those things happened on a regular basis. That was normal treatment to help to keep a patient under control. So as to the accidental asphyxiation, yes it could have been accidental. Maybe the home used some kind of gas to settle down patients that were getting worked up or some such as that. The dosage could have been too great and the patient died. No problem, it would just be listed as an accident. There may not be any other record of the fact. It may be possible that a patient was put in a sound proof room and all the cracks under the door, etc., be plugged so as to not hear the patient and the room could have been depleted of oxygen by simply breathing. Remember, Mental illness was not dealt with the same then as it is now. It has only been since about the end of WWII that we have changed the way that we look at the disorder. Finally we can accept mental illness for what it really is, an illness. I am not stating that this actually happened in Pontiac State Hospital. But if it did, it could be that the prevailing attitude at the time dismissed the importantance of what really happened and just let it get lost in the paperwork, so to speak. Yes, I would be curious too why a 61 year old might have that as a listed cause of death. But someone suggested gas. That would be my thought too. Unless the person was totally out of it they could also suffocate by drowning in bathtub of water. Remember, just two inches of water could cause a person to drown by suffocation, though I suspect the ruling would be drowning rather than asphyxiation. Another idea - having something get stuck in the windpipe could also cause you to stop breathing -- back then a lot of people probably died from choaking on food because no one knew that a squeeze on the ribcage from behind could dislodge the food. But even if they knew, if she was alone when it happened, then death resulted. The coroner's report might reveal the truth behind the death and those records are public records. Just send a letter giving the person's name and date of death to see what they send you. I wouldn't go into a lot of detail in the letter about the facts you know, they probably won't help. Just make sure you give the facts: Name, date of death and place of death that should be sufficient to get you a copy of the report. Not all deaths actually have an autopsy, but there might be a hearing so you might ask if there was an inquest and if so you would like to have a copy of that finding as well. Christie Trapp

Hi Dan, Thank you for taking the time to give some ideas of what might have happened in 1913 in Pontiac. I agree with the family not mentioning it. My husband lived in Birmingham until he was grown and went into the military and never knew he had a great aunt Harriet. Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: Dan Harriman To: MIOAKLAN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2003 7:23 AM Subject: Re: [MIOAKLAN] Pontiac State Hospital Hello Ann, Karen, et al; I think that sometimes things that happened a hundred years ago or so went unexplained, especially when it came to the mentally infirm. Karen, Good to hear from you. Looks doubtful I would be allowed access to the records She is my husband's great aunt. The Oakland County Pioneer Library in Pontiac did not have a copy of an obituary for Harriet. I never searched further. I was always curious how an age 61 woman who died 9 Sept 1913 could have been accidentally asphyxiated. Maybe gas fumes or ???? It was suggested I check at the Oakland County Courthouse for coroner's inquest. This sounds reasonable. If she died without medical attendance one would think their would have been an inquest. I will do this next time I am in Michigan unless I can get one of other Lockwood researchers to do it for me. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't. Same basic building, just different branch. Since these records have to do with medical records, they may not allow you access. You may have to prove relationship or go thru an attorney to gain access. Have you looked for an obituary on her? I would prefer to thank each of you for sending such good advice. Something is wrong with my ISP and my outgoing messages seem to just disappear. Will post a thank you to all of you. I could have never got this far with my Oakland County research without you. I appreciate you. Thank you, Ann in New Mexico
A few minutes ago I received some suggestions on where to look for more on a death at the State Hospital in Pontiac. For some reason my internet failed as I was sending a reply. This caused me to lose their name & address. If the person that wrote me did not get my thank you I will post it here. I thought it odd that a person could die of accidental asphyxiation, which one would think would have been a death that would need a coroner's inquest in 1913. I will see what I can learn from the Oakland County Courthouse. Ann in New Mexico
