    1. [MIOAKLAN] William LAWRENCE, born in Oakland County 1835
    2. Tom Krakow
    3. Hi I am looking for the parents of William LAWRENCE, born in 1835 in Oakland County, Michigan. William married Sarah BROWN of Lapeer County in 1856, and in 1860 was living in Metamora Township, Lapeer County. By 1870, William was in Tuscola County. I suspect that William is related to Nathan LAWRENCE, father of Dennis, Levi, and Joseph LAWRENCE. Nathan was listed in 1830 in Oakland County. The 1880 census has that William's parents were both born in Pennsylvania, but his later census entries are not consistent with this. Are there any other LAWRENCE researchers with roots in Oakland County? 1. [MIOAKLAN] Re: Rutland County, Michigan
    2. Gary Lee Phillips
    3. I'm quite sure there never was a Rutland County in Michigan. Furthermore, very few white people would have been born anywhere in Michigan as early as 1809. At that time, Michigan was on the wildest of wild frontiers. Except for the area right around Detroit, it was essentially in the hands of the Native Americans. Detroit, Port Huron, and a few other areas bordering on Canada had long established French-Canadian populations (descendants of traders, mostly) and perhaps a few descendants of British occupying forces. I'd say the chances are very good that you are looking at something that has been mixed up or garbled through the years. Rutland Co., Vermont was the previous home of many early Michigan settlers who arrived in the 1825-1835 time frame or thereabouts. Many people came to Michigan from Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York as soon as the federal government offered public land for sale. The earliest land sales under the Northwest Ordinance and so forth for Michigan took place in about 1828. Milford, Michigan is indeed in Oakland County and was in Wayne County before Oakland was organized. At least, the geographical area known as Milford today was. Milford as a settled area surely does not date to 1809, though. There appears to be no Milford in modern Vermont, but I don't know if there was a historic town of Milford there. There are Milford place names in both Connecticut (New Haven Co.) and New York (Otsego Co.) though. Early Michigan settlers came in large numbers from both those counties. Early Michigan place names are often taken from the place in New York or Connecticut from which the first settlers had most recently come. I would definitely check for a birth record in Rutland Co., Vermont, since you have an exact date. Vermont towns usually have birth and marriage records back well into the 18th century. Lacking success there, I'd try Milford, New York next, though records in New York that far back are very spotty. Milford, CT probably has good records but seems less likely. Have you tracked your ancestor through the census to see what state appears most frequently on the birthplace question? Gary Lee Phillips fuffle@ix.netcom.com

    3. Ron, Who are you trying to look for? Maybe some of us can help you out. Just off the top of my head, I'm wondering if you're sure its Michigan. There's a Rutland County in Vermont as well, where a lot of people in Michigan came from ... I'd be questioning the date too, unless your family was in trading or explorers, since thats five years before even Wayne County was started. Good luck! 3. Hello Everyone: I am trying to clarify some apparently erroneous information that I have received from a website. It said that a person in my family tree was born on November 02, 1809, in Milford, Rutland County, Michigan. I can't find a Rutland County, Michigan. I know that Milford is in Oakland County, Michigan, at present. Was Milford ever in a Rutland County, Michigan, and/or does anyone know anything of a Rutland County, Michigan? I wish to thank you in advance for your help. In Christ, Ron Powell

    1. [MIOAKLAN] Graves Family Boardinghouse, 1900-1930
    2. Concetta Franco
    3. Hi! Does anyone have any information about the family that ran the boardinghouse at 49 E. Burdick? Are there any pictures available of it? Enoch, the man listed in charge of it in his 1935 obituary, is my great uncle. I would very much like to know what happened to his wife, kids and grandkids after his death, since they are barely mentioned in the Lake Orion Review where his obit was. Thanks, Concetta

    3. I think I need to clarify something that I keep seeing misunderstood. Alot of people are sending me obituary lookups based on the Soc. Sec. Death index. Which is fine, except for one thing. The PLACE you see listed after death is NOT the place they died. Many people are assuming that date and place being so close together they go together. They do NOT. That place after the date of death is the location where the DEATH BENEFIT was paid to. Not where the person died. I am looking at TWO obits here, people assumed they died in Oakland County because the cities named are here. When I check my Michigan deaths cd, those persons did not die in Michigan at all. Try to keep that in mind when requesting obit lookups. I hate disappointing people when I can't find the obits they want. Not complaining - just trying to clarify the facts. 2. Ann Parsons
    3. Hi Carol, Waited to see if someone else came up with some info for you before replying. Here is what I know. I was told that the earliest Birmingham city directory was 1929. This is the year that Birmingham changed their street address numbers. I was told that there is a copy in the state library in Lansing and a Mr. James Groves now deceased had the other one. Mr. Groves told me this. Since he is now dead, perhaps his family donated his copy to the Oakland County Genealogical Society or to a library in Oakland County. If you should learn anything more than this about dirctories I would appreciate you letting me and the list know. If I learn anything more I will let you and the list know. I did find in the book Birmingham and West Bloomfield Cemeteries on page 16 published by the Oakland County Genealogical Society the following. GRIFFIN, Emily DAVIS w/o John W. b. Feb 2, 1836 d. Oct 22, 1872 This is in Greenwood Cemetery, Section B, Row 5.
