Dear fellow genealogists: I'm the listowner for the Warren Co, NJ, Oakland Co, MI and Lapeer Co, MI rootsweb lists. I have been getting a lot of bounced mail lately, mainly due to anti-spam programs in which a sender has to be approved before the mail will be accepted. Please remember that mail sent to the lists comes from the person sending the post, not from rootsweb if you are a subscriber to the list mode. If you want to use this type of anti-spam program, please switch to digest mode and accept the appropriate sender. If your email address generates too many bounced messages, your name is automatically dropped from the list. Thank you, Judy

A discussion of time management will be included. If you have not sent in your registration for the Eaton County Genealogical Society Seminar on 17 April 2004. Fawne was with us last year and we had many requests to bring her back so that she could share some more of her wonderful information and insight with us. I would ask that you forward this to your friends that might be interested. Seating will be limited so don't miss out. The deadline has been extended until April 10th. After that date you should check for availability. Go to our website at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~miecgs/workshop2004.htm> for further information. This year's annual workshop is sure to be a full day of important information. Both primary records and online sources will be discussed at length. Prepare yourself now for a summer of research by arming yourself with the most up-to-date information. CROWN LAND RECORDS For those who attended last year's workshop and heard Fawne speak on Land Registry Office records you will know the importance of understanding land records. This year Fawne will tell us all about crown land records - those lands that brought immigrants to a new world in search of free government land! For those who did not attend last year but have those ancestors that you cannot find before they come to Michigan, they may well have spent time in Ontario working for a grant of crown land to no avail before coming here. Many thousands of early settlers in the province inhabited crown lands through renting, leasing, squatting, government grants and sales. However, hundreds and even thousands of these early settlers never received the actual patent to the land from the government. Fortunately, records of the initial request for land, or attempts to settle crown land were still generated. In some instances, these records represent the only evidence of a settler's existence in the province before they died or moved on to other areas of Canada or the US. This discussion will provide researchers with a sound understanding of the land granting process, the availability of a variety of crown land records and resources. This is an important source of records for anyone doing Ontario research. USING MAPS IN FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH Maps are critical research tools for family history research. Maps both old and new are important resources to help researchers track down facts about their families; offer the names of individual landowners or residents; show the location of a home on a specific lot; illustrate the relationship of settlers to local institutions; reveal changing place names and; even show changes in the boundaries of nations, provinces, counties, administrative areas (important to early record keeping). An understanding of geographic locations and the relationships illustrated with maps will help family historians locate potential sources of records about their families. This lecture will both explain and visually illustrate the importance of maps for family history research. By attending this year's workshop you will also have an opportunity to see copies of rare Ontario maps. ONLINE SOURCES FOR FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH Are you trying to do your research online? This session will provide an overview of helpful online resources for researching your family history. Particular attention is given to finding primary sources online and information for those searching in the ancestral homelands of England, Ireland, Scotland and Europe. What tools are there to help you? What obstacles will you encounter? What pitfalls should you watch for? Discover how to connect your primary research with online resources and information. Due to the popularity of this lecture, it has been expanded beyond the 1 hour allotted during the workshop which means participants will receive even more valuable information than originally planned. It also means the schedule for the day could run a little bit over. Don't miss this important information to help you search online effectively! FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH IN THE 21ST CENTURY Today we stand as participants and witnesses to the infant years of a new century and a new millennium. In the same way that technology has revolutionized the way we live, the hobby (or should we say "obsession") of family history is also in the throws of revolutionary change. But what does this mean to the way in which we conduct our research? More importantly, what will be the legacy of modern family historians for future generations? This session is designed to help researchers identify and balance the information and resources available both online and in traditional institutions in order to make the most of them and ensure that our family history research is a lasting legacy for future generations
I am looking for living members of a Tracy family that were living in Birmingham Village, in the County of Oakland, Michigan on the 1930 census. The family consisted in 1930 of the following: Guy A Tracy 33, his wife Florence M 31 then Ruth A 8, Donald A 7, Robert A 6, Jean H 3 and Virginia A 1. Florence was born in Michigan, in about 1899 (though not proven yet, I'm sure it was in Bay City) she was born to J & Eva (Armstrong) Butterfield. Eva (Armstrong) was the daughter of William Armstrong, a son of my great-grandfather Rainey Armstrong. We are planning a Rainey Armstrong family reunion for July 3 and 4 and would like very much to be in touch with members of this Tracy family. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. Ron Armstrong
Christie, I 'collect' Lockwood names in Macomb & Oakland County, with the thought that they may connect to my husband's line. He descends from Elbridge & Maria [Blanchard] Lockwood. I had this Jeremiah, father of Amanda is my 'strays'. Source: Just his name from Amanda's death & marriage info in Macomb & Oakland County vital records. Have nothing more on the Jeremiah father of Amanda. The other Jeremiah, the one in Brandon Township sounds like the one you posted a query about. My husband has the scanner with his computer. Will ask him to email page to you. If this doesn't work I can U.S. mail it to you. Will do my best. So, perhaps she is from an earlier generation with a father named Jeremiah. Perhaps it could be she is related to him back a generation as MY Jeremiah's father may have been born about 1815-1816 or before if he was age 20 at marriage and Jeremiah is his first child. Therefore, perhaps she could be his father's sister? Would be interesting to find this out. If you wish to email me a copy and you are scanning it, could you convert it to a jpeg format. Has anyone heard of the St. Francis Order in Rochester? In 1941 Sophia Eisenmann had a obit where it mention two of her sisters were in Rochester, MI at the St Francis Order, this would be Rufina and Bertha Milller. I don't know when they was born but Sophia was 67 years old when she died in 1941 b. in 1874. I would like to find a address to this St. Francis Order. Or someplace that might still have the records. Or maybe someone might know of a book, that has been published. Charlotte Flock

Hi Oakland County researchers, I want to thank all of you who are so generous with your help, especially Christie Trapp and Ann Parsons. When I signed on this list, I was hoping to find some information about the VAUGHAN and GERMAN families of Oakland County. It has been great to get birth records, marriage records, cemetery records and advice as to where to go for more information. My search began with one clue, a rich uncle named John GERMAN, who lived in Los Angeles, California. Using Census records, I went back each ten years from the 1930 Census and I learned his birth year - in 1910 Census. He was from Michigan. I found him on the 1860 and 1870 records, too. I was able to find the information I needed! Like a miracle! Christie did a birth look up and gave me the needed information and Ann supplied the cemetery information of many of the families. It is so great to have people who like to help each other. If any of you want my information on the VAUGHAN and GERMAN families, just ask! Thank you all for sharing! I'm researching Rivers and Hickmott and have several relatives in the area - although am not sure of the year. Would it be too much to ask for any listings of those surnames? Thanks!
