The differences you are seeing are villages and townships becoming cities, a trend in MI because each has different legislated levels of authority, control, services and taxation limits, with cities having the highest levels. For instance, the Village of Clarkston became a city in 1992 (or 94) to get out from under the control of Independence Township. Township and village authority overlap and although the villages are included in the voting, the population differences often put them in the minority. To gain control they become cities to eliminate the township rule. Most of the governing entities have web pages which should provide a history of the changes. I found the following on Rochester Hill's http://www.rochesterhills.org/index.htm Avon Township, Rochester Hills' predecessor, was organized in 1835, two years before Michigan became a State, as a general law township. In August 1978, the Township of Avon became a Charter Township*. On May 22, 1984, the Electorate of Avon Charter Township voted to become a Home Rule City, the City of Rochester Hills, effective at noon, Tuesday, November 20, 1984. And we thought that boundary changes only happened in the distant past. Mollie * There are different types of townships with varying levels of authority. A township can become a charter township two ways but each has a different level of authority. One, a vote on the people empowers the township to levy up to 8** mills of property taxes without putting the tax issue to the people. Two, by a vote of the township board which limits the board to 1.5** mills. ** The numbers may be off, but the concept is actuate. Hi Pam, Thanks for posting this. I need some help on how to enter this location in my genealogy. Where I have been entering in my genealogy program for example: Rochester, Avon Township, Oakland County, Michigan. This is now Rochester, Rochester Hills Township, Oakland County, Michigan? Or if in the past enter it as Rochester, Avon Township as of [date] Rochester Hills Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Can someone tell me the date that this township name was changed? Then I can go back for the events in the 1840-to date of change and enter the second example. For the events after the date of change, enter the first example. I sure am glad to learn this. Rochester Hills took up Avon Township. Dan was correct about the urban sprawl. You can drive from downtown Detroit all the way to M-59 with no break. There is much development north of M-59. There is little or no rural character to the area, which was mainly farmland 30 years ago. Thanks, Pam Pamela A. I live 2 miles from this site. I will drive by there later today and look it over. My mother lives in a trailer park on the North side of the road at the top of that hill. It is an "over 55" park, and by the looks of some of the trailers, has been there 20+ years. Dan, do you remember it? Thanks, Pam Pamela A. There has been very significant amounts of urban spread in the past 20 or 30 years around the Auburn Hts, Rochester, Avon twp (Roch. Hills), and Orion twp area. I haven't been down Auburn Rd, in over 20 yrs. I do remember the church in question. I just can't place what side of the road it was on. I want to say the south side, but it may have been on the north. The church set back a ways from the road and had trees around it. (At least some shade of some sort). There are some hills going towards the east from Auburn Hts on Auburn Rd, with a fairly large hill (for the area) as the last hill to go down before getting to Crooks Rd. The church was at the bottom of that hill. I remember that if the traffic light at Crooks Rd had just turned green as I topped the hill, I could make the light if I didn't slow down. The hill was about a half mile or more from Crooks. Back before M59 was a freeway, M59 used to be Auburn Rd. That road went all the way to Selfridge Air Force Base near Mt Clemens. It was what used to be called a truck route. The light stayed green extra long at Crooks so that the truckers wouldn't have to stop after getting rolling so good down that hill. Avon township, Auburn Hts and Orion township are not really far on a map. But remember that there were no freeways around there before about 1960/65. For someone to live in Orion township and work at the southwest part of Avon township would have been a trek of 10 miles or so, depending on where in Orion township the person lived. That was a pretty far distance to travel back then, especially if they were not working at Truck & Coach or Pontiac Motors. If the person lived in Clarkston, then the trip would have been almost unheard of back then. It is possible that maybe Lawrence was the pastor at Stone baptist and then retired to Clarkston. I do believe that the resident pastor at Stone Baptist lived local to the church. If the church has disbanded, it is very unlikely that any records have survived, at least not at the district level, as Baptist churches are mostly autonomous. I know that when I wanted to send for my baptism papers to join a church down here in Texas, I was told that the church I was baptised in disbanded and that any baptismal papers the church may have had were now non-existant. Lake Orion and Rochester are 12 miles apart. Clarkston is about 12 or 15 miles west of Lake Orion. Lake Orion is about 10 -12 miles north of Pontiac. The townships in the below listed map are 6 miles on a side. Stone Baptist would be near the intersection of the lines of Troy, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills and Bloomfield Hills. I would think that the Oakland County Courthouse would have the death certificates and that might tell what funeral home they were viewed in etc. I do believe that Sparks-Griffin (Griffin) Funeral Home in Lk Orion is the same one that has been there since the beginning of time. That might be the place to call. I had some luck there a couple of years ago in locating some of my lateral family. Thank you Mollie for posting the site for the County Base Map. I am probably wrong but I notice some of the townships are different than ones on the maps I have. The one marked Rochester Hills I have as Avon Township. Has this Township name been changed??? It appears on this map that the township names are in larger print. It has Bloomfield part way into West Bloomfield. It has Farmington [Township] in smaller print. It has Southfield marked above & across what I thought were Farmington and Southfield Townships. I don't want to cause anyone extra work, but being out of Michigan I may have missed that these township names have been changed. To give you an idea of close Orion, Clarkston and Auburn Hill are here's a link to a basic Oakland Co. map. http://www.co.oakland.mi.us/oss/assets/docs/base_CVTs_letter.pdf I don't believe that the online Oakland Press archives go back to the early 1990's. The obits only go back to the date that the web site was created. The Library of Michigan and the Pontiac Public Library have the paper on microfilm. I couldn't find a listing for Stone Baptist Church in the yellow pages nor in the online Baptist church listing at http://phonebook.superpages.com/yellowpages/C-Baptist+Churches/S-MI/page-1/. Could it be that stone is not part of the formal name but a physical description and common name? You might want to do call an area Baptist church and see if they can help you. I would think that the ministers know each other and if you could find one who's been around for a while, they might remember him. Another thought is for Rita to get a map or atlas that has Michigan. Then she would be able to find the location of the places she is asking where they are located. That area would have an "Auburn Hts" zip code and Telephone exchange, but a Rochester Hills address. It would not be Pontiac, the corner of Opdyke and South Blvd mark the boundary between Pontiac on the west of Opdyke and the north of South Blvd, with Auburn Hills being just 1 mile wide at that point, east of Opdyke to Adams. Adams marks the boundary between Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills. (Auburn is 1 mile north of South Blvd, completely in Rochester Hills.) Thanks, Pam Pamela A. I want to Thank everyone who has sent messages regarding my query on Lawrence DICKEN(S) and the Stone Baptist Church. As I noted in an earlier email I did contact the Oakland Press regarding the loss of archived obits. Here below is their response which I just received. Karen Hello Karen, As I am sure that you have noticed we now have a totally new look to both our main news page as well as the classified pages. With this new format we temporarily lost a few features such as archiving obituaries. This however is temporary and we are currently working on new software that will allow us to archive the obituaries as well as if not better than our old site. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused you and hope that once we get the new archives fully functional you will find them as useful as you did our previous product. Thank you. _____________
I did go to the website and I did inquire as to whether or not they were going to make those "archived" years available or not. When and if I hear anything I will let you know. Dan & MIOAKLAN-L: I have an Atlas of MI counties. There is an Orion Township in Oakland County. The town of Lake Orion in the northwest corner of Orion Township and borders on Oxford Township. State highway M-24 goes north & south through the towns of Lake Orion & Oxford. Lapeer County is to the north of the town of Oxford and Orion Township is north of the City of Pontiac, Pontiac Township, MI. Therefore, I don't believe that you have the correct town for any of your facts. I also checked for the spelling as Dickin(s). I would suggest that you send for the death certificates for all concerned from Oakland County to see what the death certificate actually has to say about place of death and burial. From that reference you can then search for an obituary. The obituary was not found in the Lake Orion Review which is the local paper for that area. Can anyone tell me if any of the papers from in and around Clarkston are online? Many thanks again, Karen. Rita PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com
