    3. Pam, I'm sure the list would be glad to help, but a few pointers: 1. Change the digest subject so we can tell you are asking about an Andrew Smith! 2. Do you have any dates or other relevant information about Andrew? Middle name, birthdate, parents names, etc.? Even small straws of information can sometimes pay off big. Including that information can help us lookup more, or point you to a better source. 3. Turn off your business signature for 1) it shows you're slacking at work ;-) (not that lots of people don't do that but that you really wouldn't want your boss to find your posts), and 2) by its very nature, a mailing list defeats the purpose of the "confidential" tag line you use. By posting to the list, you agree to make the contents of your post public and viewable to many people. Please don't think I'm preachy - I'm very willing to help with a spot more information. After all, Pontiac is a big town and there are a whole lot of people out there with the last name Smith. Sort of inhibits freebie lookups on ANYTHING after 1940 (deaths & Marriages). 3. I have learned so much from all the posts about Orion. Thank you! I am looking for more information on Betsey German, listed as 41 years old on the 1870 Census of the "Town of Orion, in the County of Oakland," with the post office at Canandaigua. Page 12, family 85. She was born in Canada. Two children listed with her are Charles, age 11 and Ella, age 9- both born in Michigan. Their father was of foreign birth. Where would I look for the death and burial information for Charles and Betsey, who are not listed on the 1880 Census? I BELIEVE Betsey was the widow of John German. I need proof of Ella's parents names. Would there be wills or real estate records available for Orion? On the 1880 Census, Ella is listed as a sister in the household of Philip and Mary Durkee. Ella married John Vaughan. Would like to compare information on the GERMAN , VAUGHAN, PEARSALL, LEET, and DURKEE families of Oakland County, Michigan. Thank you for any help or ideas of where to search next. 3. --=======7D47238F======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-4AB5745; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Hello all; For as long as my parents can remember, who incidentally are in their late 70's mid 80's, the Village of Lake Orion has always been the Village of Lake Orion. It was never known as Orion in their lifetimes. The lake itself has a dam that is right near M 24, just south of town. The lake may have been man-made, or quite possibly enlarged at one time from a natural lake, I don't know. The town may have been named Orion back a 150 years or so ago, but during the 20th century it was Lake Orion. There used to be an amusement park on one of the islands in the lake. Park Island I think. I used to live on another island in the lake, Buena Vista Island, I think...at least that was the name of the street I lived on there. 3. Here's a website that states that Lake Orion was indeed named Orion for a while - it changed (at least the post office name did) in 1926 with the village voting for it in 1929. The information is excepted below the link. http://www.hometownvalue.com/lakeorion.htm History John Wetmore and Judah Church (nearby Judah Lake was named for him) made the first land entries in the area in 1819, a power dame, built in 1823, united several small lakes and formed the present mile-wide lake. The settlement was first called Canandaigua for and by the settlers who had come here from the Canandaigua, N.Y., area. The village was first platted as Canandaigua City by James Stillson in 1836. But when it was given a post office the townspeople chose Orion "because it was short, handy to write, and altogether lovely". James Decker became it s first postmaster on June 30, 1834. The office was renamed to Oakland on May 11, 1843, but was later closed. On June 28, 1854, the New Canandaigua post office was transferred her and renamed Orion. Incorporated as the village of Orion in 1859. Its post office was renamed to Lake Orion on March 25, 1926 and by the popular village vote took the same name in 1929. Nancy

    1. Orion - Lake Orion
    2. Orion and Lake Orion should be one and the same. Way back when, it used to be known as Orion rather than Lake Orion. It is on a lake. I have been reading the local newspapers checking for obits and happenings of the local town folk, and some time in the 1960's I believe it was, they changed the name of the newspaper from Orion Weekly Review to Lake Orion Review. Therefore, I believe the town made the decision to also change its name to reflect the fact that it is on a lake. So, if you are looking in the census records in the past, it was known as Orion or Orion Village or Orion Twp. Then it became Lake Orion. Christie Trapp

For example, the public library on Joslyn Road is the Orion Township Public Library, instead of Lake Orion Public Library. The county has a great website about each of the communities of Oakland County: http://www.co.oakland.mi.us/communities/ Concetta >>> <ChristieTrapp@aol.com> 4/22/2004 8:40:27 AM >>> Orion and Lake Orion should be one and the same.
