To all:- It seems IDENTITY THEFT is the "excuse" for possibly cutting off access to various census records, possibly on both sides of the 49th Parallel. When one thinks about it -- various departments of government, credit card companies and others commit "identity theft" every time we use or access any of these known facilities. Has one been able to access many governmental departments without the well-known S.I.N. [Social Insurance Number]? If one does not have this, information is not procured. Credit Cards? Has anyone ever signed up for one without having to give your mother's MAIDEN name? With your name and your mother's maiden name, plus a bit of computer research, including Ancestry.com and any L.D.S. centre, the whole family is revealed. OBITUARIES are one of the greatest items a family researcher is able to use to complete a family. However, read the following and visualize HOW the information may be utilized:- SMITH, JOHN JAMES -- The family of John James Smith, age 17, are grief-stricken following his untimely death after a short illness. He was an honors student at Mytown Secondary School, Mytown, where his family had lived for more than 50 years. Surviving the well-liked young man are his parents, John James Smith Sr. and his mother, the former Mary Elizabeth Jones; grandparents William Jones and Maizie (Steel); James Smith and Catherine (Uphill). Just read over the above obituary -- not a real one -- and one can put together a family group sheet. A few phone calls in Mytown would ascertain place and occupations of survivors. IDENTITY THEFT often may begin with the proud announcement of a new baby -- parents are thrilled and include names of all grandparents with maiden names and places of residence, date of birth, hospital, even the weight -- often a photo. Political members will likely turn a blind eye to the IDENTITY THEFT which would continue even if the records were sealed. In Canada, we are hopeful our politicians will remember this vile type of theft would continue -- and also remember, many have had wallets (with identification) LIFTED while innocently waiting to pay for groceries. [This method of Identity Theft came from my husband's companion at Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing -- It happened to her -- I.D. and money stolen] Please visit your elected and appointed politicians -- let this not be a poor excuse for non-release of census records -- we need support of all -- many have never replied!!! Hi Debbie, I haven't seen any responses to your posting, so I'll pass along what I can. I have a copy of a page of the 1905 Minnesota Census for the Village of Pennock, St. Johns Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Here's what it shows: Name of County Enumeration District (ED) No. Name of Organized Township Name of Unorganized Township Name of City, and Ward, Sub-division, and Precinct(s) of the City Date of Enumeration Signature of Enumerator There are 17 Columns and Sub-Columns with (with one Row for each Person). The Column Headings are: 1. Consecutive Number of Enumeration (a Number associated with each Person) 2. Name 3. Street or Avenue address of that Location 4. Number on Street or Avenue of that Location (e.g., House Number) 5. Sex 6. Age at Last Birthday 7. Color (White, Black, Japanese, Chinese, Indian) 8. Nativity -- Place of Birth of this Person 9. Nativity -- Place of Birth of Father of this Person 10. Nativity -- Place of Birth of Mother of this Person 11. Period of Residence (in Minnesota) -- Years 12. Period of Residence (in Minnesota) -- Months 13. Period of Residence (in this ED) -- Years 14. Period of Residence (in this ED) -- Months 15. Regular Occupation 16. Military Service (Soldier or Sailor) 17. Wars (Civil War or Spanish-American) Most (if not all) of this information is the same as found on the 1910 Federal Census (which I also have a copied page from for the same area). The 1910 census also includes information for each Person on: Relationships of the Persons listed, Marital Status, No. of Years in Present Marriage, No. of Children (for Mothers), Year of Immigration to the US, Whether Naturalized or Alien, Whether able to speak English (or other, identified, Language), Trade or Profession, General nature of industry or business in which the Person works, Whether working as Employer, Employee, or "On Own Account", Whether able to Read, Whether able to Write, Whether attended school any time since September 1, 1900 [date hard to read], Ownership of Home (Owned or Rented, Owned Free or Mortgaged, Farm or House, Number of Farm schedule (??) [last word hard to read], Whether a Survivor of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy, Whether Blind (both eyes), and Whether Deaf and Dumb). From all this, it appears that, as far as amount of information is concerned, the Federal Censuses would be best. However, there may be events that occur between the 10-Year Censuses that you might miss unless you also have the 5-year ones. I hope all this "mind-rotting-trash" (as "Mad" magazine might say) is of help to you. Bob Peterson
Hello, I know this is VERY unusual, but since several years I'm searching for a Verna de Vylder, * abt. 1941, probably Chicago. She was married to my uncle Franz Gierl, but he died in 1964 in I heard she got married about a year or so after his death. I don't have her current name. I only have 3 pictures of my uncle and I think it could be possible that she has more or can tell me something about him. I never met him, because he died 5 years before my birth. So if anybody ever heard of hear, knows her, has information I would highly appreciate it. Thank you all for your support. Greetings from Bavaria Ingo

NON-RESIDENTS INVITED TO ASSIST! To all readers:- Next year, 2003 is a very busy year with many planned, plus other hopeful events. Here are several 2003 events:- Family researchers and genealogists are working for and hoping for the release of the 1911 Canadian census records. Many petitions have been sent, supporting Bill S-12 by Senator Lorna Milne -- plus letters sent to both Senators and Members of Parliament. Hard-copy letters are better -- FREE postage. Petitions: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Download, get signers and forward to Gordon or myself. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm ---------------- Way back when, ancestors of many of us arrived at Halifax in 1751 and then founded Lunenburg and vicinity in 1753. The year 2003 will mark the 250th anniversary with various celebrations planned, with reunions, a trip by ship from Halifax to Lunenburg, plus Down Home hospitality. One radio/internet program advertising the coming events is the Sail On Nova Scotia - SONS - by Bryan Keddy. There is only one small bad bit of luck -- Bryan now has to pay for the Live365 for our listening pleasure. Following is a note from Bryan:- "Just a short note to let you know that I spent all night recording (Roger Whitaker, The Whites, Paul Overstreet, Alberta Slim, Willie Forbes and many others) then uploaded over 175 new songs for this weeks SONS program" The SONS program is available at http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/bryanfkeddy/SONS.html Once all the required bits are done like registration, the next time you would just have to click on the black arrow in the yellow circle, click on "Log In" -- make sure the speakers are on -- and ENJOY! Sail On Nova Scotia also has census announcements -- genealogists would like to see the release of the 1906 and 1911 records -- the theme song is "I'm My Own Grandpa" - who will do the family history! ---------------- The latest to join the 2003 list of celebrations is the City of Brampton, celebrating its sesquicentennial - 1853 - 2003. Events are planned for every month, including regaining the Flowertown of Canada title. See http://www.city.brampton.on.ca Muriel M. Hi, I was just wondering if there was a site that listed when Minnesota town and county history books come out for purchase? Some towns and counties that are just celebrating 50 or 100 years might have history books available and thought it would be neat if the state had a list of books upcoming and ones that are still available. Thanks, Jeen jmbr43@uslink.net

My grandfather, Oscar Norstad was a terrific man who loved horses and instilled in me a great love for them, as well -- such that, today I breed Arabian horses (though on a very small scale). He had a great sense of humor and loved his jokes. My grandmother, Rachel, was a beautiful woman and such a wonderful, warmhearted person. I believe she greatly resembled Candice Bergen and all of her daughters -- my mother, Ruth, Evelyn, Louella and Marilyn -- were lovely women. My mother married Gifford Holmes, a patent attorney and an inventor. I'm pretty sure we are "cousins," though I don't know if it's second or third cousins. Anyway, it's nice to have found you. My younger sister, Lani Verbout, is our "family historian" so she would love to hear from you, I'm sure. Her e-mail address is: jmv1962@aol.com I live in Los Angeles, California and work at O'Melveny & Myers, a law firm. My boss is former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher and we are very involved in national and international matters for the government and in various political campaigns. I've worked with Mr. Christopher since he retired from the State Department in 1997 and in that time, he's written two books -- one of them, "Chances of a Lifetime" is a memoir and was on the best seller list for several weeks. He is Norwegian, too, and if we go back far enough is probably related to both you and me. He is a wonderful man, such a gentleman and highly respected. I'm so fortunate to have such a great job that I enjoy going into each day. Let me know more about you and your family, Emily -- and let my sister Lani know, too. She lives in Normal, Illinois with her husband John Verbout. Best regards. Kerin Holmes Los Angeles, CA e-mail: kholmes@omm.com
