There`s a difference between wants and needs. School, Roads, Social Security are needs. If you don`t mind paying for my genealogy wants, send me your paychecks, if you have a job. Patrick
I find the MN Historical Society Death Certificate Index so invaluable, I wouldn't mind paying a fee for annual use in order to keep it available and updated. Just my two cents from "born in Minnesota, living in Maryland" - where services are being slashed and taxes raised
Oh, I agree. Shut down all monies to schools (my children are all grown and no longer need any schooling) and probably shut down funding to retirement homes as well (I plan to die of old age or a bullet in my own home), and please, stop building roads, paying for police and fire services, and let us all live in peace, just as our ancestors did in prehistoric times. I have my club ready to protect what I keep from paying in taxes for this frivolous items. What the heck, no one minds paying $29 for a social security application form. Why not pay directly here as well? Just sock it to us, baby! Who needs genealogical records anyway? All sorts of programs in MN are facing budget cuts, not just MN Historical Society. I use the MN Historical Society some, but I don't feel raising my taxes is really right. I agree--bake sales, donations, membership due increase, raise the cost of copies or other records but please don't raise my taxes for the few times I actually use the MN Historical Society. Its like the education system wanting money. If they would lay off a few administrators that get paid $100,000 a year for doing nothing than maybe you could budget and save your schools. But instead you pass that on to the people of MN and our taxes go way up. I have a slab of land that is so small and I have to pay about 1800 a year for that small patch of grass just because they passed a levy in Woodbury for the school system--which my kids don't even attend. Its pathetic. So in my opinion, do what the private schools do when they need money--have a fund raiser or some kind of drive to make money. Don't pass another tax onto the hard working people of Minnesota. Thank you. This info comes from the 1880 US Census; 1.Gotleib Schmidt age 36, b.WI, parents b.Germany ************************************ 2.Mary Schmidt age 29, b.WI, parents b.Germany ********************* 3.Frank Schmidt age 13, b.WI ********************* 4.Mary Schmidt age 10, b.MN ****************** 5.Edward Schmidt age 9, b.MN ************* 6.Tilda Schmidt age 6, b.MN *********************** 7.William Schmidt age 4, b.MN **************** 8.Clara Schmidt age 2, b.MN ******************* 9.Pauly Schmidt age 1m, b.MN ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mother Mary died shortly after this census. Frank married a girl from Grantsburg, WI and moved to Oregon. Edward and William later followed him out there and lived in Washington and Oregon. Edward married and had a daughter, but he died quite young. William lived around Walla Walla, Washington and spent time in Alaska. I don`t think William ever married. Mary went by the name May. May married Louis Roberts. May and Louis/Lewis lived in St. Paul Park, MN where they had four boys and a girl (names unknown). Tilda went by Tillie. Tillie married Benard Rohr(not sure of spelling). Tillie stayed in Minneapolis and had at least one daughter(Bernetta). Clara Married Joseph Andrew McLane, they lived there lives in the Twin Cities, MN. Clara and Joseph`s children are Lester Roy, Mildred Arlene, Lucille Helen, Joseph Edward, and Shyrle Emily(died as infant). Gotleib supposedly married again after Mary died and had a farm near Grantsburg, WI. Looking for any information on these families. Thanks
If that Katie Kunzelmann born abt. 1877 was yours, then the Eugene Lake born abt. 1878 might be yours as well. At least, they are close to the same age. Jean, You give no clues as to what time frame you are checking MN for your Kunzelmann family. I found 103 people with the surname of Kunzelman(n) in the online 1880 census. Don't know enough about who you are searching for to point out the correct family. Go to http://www.familysearch.org/ click on the second picture down on the left side "US 1880, British, and Canandian 1881 Censuses" On the white part of the page "Census" box - choose "US 1880 Census" Type in Kunzelmann for the Last Name and hit "Search" in the lower right Click on any Kunzelmann that interests you - there's a Katie in there. You'll see some information about her/his census record Up in the right hand corner - click on "Household" There's the whole family... You can find "Next Household" and "Previous Household" in the upper righter corner, so you can scroll through the neighbors and see if you recognize other relations and friends of the family. Often the kids would marry neighbors. Jean, You need to give everyone some idea of what part of what century this refers to? Are you looking for first half of twentieth century? Or second half? Are they deceased? A little more basic information will help people help you. I thought this message would be appropriate to the list. To all list members. Please read, respond and pass this along to anyone researching MN links. Thank you! Dear J I am writing to ask for your help. As a family historian who has used the Minnesota Historical Society's Online Index to Death Certificates, you know first-hand the value of our web site. Today, the Society faces the very real possibility of severe budget cuts. It is very important that our state leaders know how much the Society's online collections and Library means to you. The time to make your voice heard is now. Now, I am asking for your help, when it is needed most critically. Recently, the House Economic Development Finance Committee recommended an additional reduction of over $800,000 per year for the Society, beyond the Governor's recommended cut of $4,000,000 per year. If enacted, this level of cut would total nearly $5 million each year for the Society's budget, or 18% of the Society's budget. As a percentage of the funds we have available to support our programs, the cut is even deeper. The Senate proposal makes a very small reduction in the Society's budget, leaving the Society's programs intact. Now it is time for the Legislature to reconcile these striking differences. The Society has much at stake, including further reducing the Library's hours and cutting librarians who assist you and other patrons. The Society certainly recognizes the financial problems that the state faces. The level of cuts proposed for the Society, however, would seriously impair our ability to collect new genealogical materials and to deliver new services, such as the recent death certificate index. Plans for a birth certificate index and an index to the 1895 census would be seriously compromised. Such a cut would also mean a reduction in educational and public programs at the History Center Museum, reductions in hours at the History Center Library, and reductions at historic sites including fewer open hours, fewer staff for living history programs and potential closure of seven or more historic sites, including the James J. Hill House in St. Paul, Comstock House in Moorhead, Oliver H. Kelley Farm in Elk River, Historic Forestville near Preston, Fort Ridgely near Fairfax and the Lower Sioux Agency near Redwood Falls, Grand Mound, near International Falls and the Forest History Center, near Grand! R! apids. As the House and Senate work together to set the state's budget in the next few weeks, it is very important that legislators hear that the programs and activities of the Minnesota Historical Society are important to you. If you are a member of the Society, you may have received a letter or e-mail asking for your help. We apologize for any duplication. I am happy to say that many of the Society's supporters have chosen to speak out for the Society in recent weeks. Legislators have received many wonderful letters of support for our programs. I can tell you that our supporters' voices are making a difference. Please take a moment now to call, write, or email your legislator and key decision-makers who will decide on the Society's budget in the coming weeks. Please let them know that the state's heritage is important to you. Information on contacting legislators appears below. Also, if you know of others who are interested in genealogy, and the services that the Minnesota Historical Society Library provides, please send a copy of this email to them. If you have any questions about the Society's budget request, please contact David Kelliher, the Society's legislative liaison, at 651-297-8085 or david.kelliher@mnhs.org. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Nina Archabal

Hi Cheryl, The book "A Pioneer History of Becker County, Minnesota" by Alvin H Wilcox, 1907 mentions people who were elected to the position of Justice of the Peaces. See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnbecker/ch20b.htm "The first set of township officers were: Chairman of board of supervisors, E. L. Wright; supervisors, Charles E. Churchill and Patrick Quinlan; clerk, James G. Chilton. Roscoe Dow was elected justice of the peace at this election, but did not qualify." Citizenship may have been a requirement. The Becker County GenWeb site mentions the surname Sletten. Paul Sletten and others. Cheri Marriages in MN are/were recorded in the county where the license was granted. The marriage could take place anywhere in MN. Try the MN Historical Society for the laws regarding Justice of the Peace. I think you would have to research the law books yourself as the law may have changed over the years. An Email to MNHS may advise you where to start that search. Good Luck! Hi, Can anyone point me to a resource or provide me with information on what a Justice of the Peace is/was in MN. I have only a very vague idea. I know that they could perform marriages and I've always assumed that they were some kind of judge. I am interested in knowing what their duties, qualifications and jurisdiction were. Could a Justice of the Peace perform a marriage anywhere, anywhere in the state or just in their county? How did a person become a Justice of the Peace - elected? What other things did they do besides marriages? I am also interested in knowing what the procedures were/are for recording a marriage in the State of MN. I have always thought that it was recorded in the county where the marriage ceremony took place. I have come across a record of a marriage that seems to me was performed in another part of the state. Trying to make sense of it! Cheri
