Thanks to all who replied to my query.Leaf was Sven Johan's last name in this country. His patronymic name was Svensson and I have searched under that name and also Swenson and Swanson. I also put in Johan as his first name and switched first and last names. I got the death date from a family tree and then from the church records of the Swedish Church in Parkers Prairie. It was recorded by his son who was the pastor in that congregation. That should be accurate as I have found this pastor's record keeping to be very neat and correct. There are no Engquists in the family and hard to imagine that the son would put the wrong name down on the death certificate unless someone else gave the information. Need to check that out. Again many thanks for the good advice. Helene Leaf
What is the Swedish word for "leaf"? Could the death record be under that name/word? "Leaf" definitely isn't a Swedish word so where did it come from? I have found in Norwegian and German research that immigrants took the English translation of their European name as their new name. Jean R. Have you ordered copies of their death certificates? I did just a quick search for William Storie through the MNHS death certificate index and found him there. www.mnhs.org Likely you would find the others there as well. Sue

Do you have any Engquist in your family? We had a case where the person giving the information gave THEIR last name instead of the actual name of the deceased. I am not aware of a town named Parker's Prairie in Minnesota - and I could not locate it on the Geographic Nameserver. Are you absolutely certain of the location of the death? Parker is a family line for me and I thought I had checked out all the "Parker" locations here in MN. But would love to know if I missed one. Keep in mind that the date could be wrong as well. Where did you find the date of death? Try using Sven and Johan as last names or the start of last names. I have seen some pretty bizarre stuff on the death index. Does anyone know if we can request corrections to the index? As long as it is a transcribing/indexing error I think it should be corrected. Certainly not if it is incorrect on the death certificate. Changing the certificate is an entirely different matter. This is a stumper - and obviously we all are challenged by it. Jo Hogle

Hi, I have just joined the list. I'm hoping someone in Hennepin County can help me answer some questions regarding a virtual wiping out of a family. I have a William O. Storlie, b 1860, Mower County, d 17 Aug 1942, Hennepin County. His second wife, Carolyn nee Nelson, birthdate unknown, apparently died the same day. Their son, William Jr, died Jan 15, 1943, Hennepin County. If these dates are correct as given to me, I would like to find out the circumstances of these deaths. (William Sr was originally married to the daughter of my gg-uncle, Anna nee Aamot, who died in S Dakota in 1900.) Appreciate any info or suggestions on getting more info. Star Ostgard Rochester, MN I have my own little world, but it's okay they know me there. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Free online calendar with sync to Outlook(TM).
I agree with Kathy. Some of my family members have been listed under the patronymic surname they used in Norway, rather than the name they took in the US. Although answers were directed to me, I'm not the person who originally asked about Sven Johan LEAF, but I want to thank everyone who offered help on searching for him. What a great group of helpful people. I believe the person who first posed the question about Sven Johan LEAF was Helene Leaf. I was only telling her what I had found when I tried the search for her. You know how we like to double check what someone has done to see if anything was missed. I'm sure she appreciates your kindness. If I ever have a Minnesota query I sure know where to ask! Judy; I had similar problem trying to find a family member. What you could do with the Sven you have is send for a copy of any death notices from the Minn. Historical Society or the library. It may give you the info you need re other family members, as well as Sven. That's how I found out I had the right family member! It's usually cheaper than the death certif. plus the bonus of finding others. Sue

This result (CHICKEN) SLEPICKA, MICHAEL does not come up unless I ask for my grandfather by his first name only and help with the year and county. I suspect the parentheses may be the problem, but neither Chicken nor Slepicka come up in a broad search for him. And I have seen other names in the list that use parentheses, as a matter of fact one entry that pops up with my search is for CZELUSIAK (CIELUSAK), MICHAEL SR. and I suspect the name in the parens may not come up since Michael Slepicka does not come up for me. You are correct. With all searches one should use their imagination and not limit themselves. It's a great site and we are very lucky it is there. My grandmother is not there. I did find my grandfather but only because I knew the date and used the date to locate him, his name was incorrectly entered. I cannot find my grandmother when using the date so there appear to be some omissions. Elaine If you cannot convince them, confuse them. --Harry S. I've used various tactics in order to locate family members or potential family members. One is to use the "Starts with" button and only put a few letters of the last name in the box. Then select the county you think the death occurred. Then search all those records. You could also limit the year of death down to 10 years either way. Hi Helene, No, all the deaths are not listed in the index. That "human error" thing reared it's ugly head again. ;-) There are ways to locate the death cert in those instances assuming you know the date of death and county in which it occurred. Because I do lookups for others using those films, I have had occasion to see many other errors; the most common being the certificate number on the index may actually belong to a person other than the one who appears on the death certificate. Remember humans read the information on the death certificates and entered the data into a computer. Sometimes the error was in data entry, sometimes the handwriting on the original document is nearly impossible to read and the guess was simply incorrect. Despite the flaws, the index is a wonderful tool and one for which I am most grateful. I do searches in other states and believe me Minnesota has one of the best systems around! I tried using only Sven and 1908, and in that year fifteen Svens died and only one Sven (Sven Johan ENGQUIST) died September 8, 1908. Not even close to LEAF! I've had to be VERY creative using this index but am so grateful to have it, too. Judy
Sorry for the mislead. Myrtle was a single unwed mother, disowned by family, and never spoke of her family, EVER. Subject was offllimits. NO additional info on death cert, etc., no info ever mentioned to her 1 daughter or grandchildren or have been found on any paperwork so far. So far this has been like shooting for ducks in the desert<g>. Thanks anyway-- Byron Schafbuch - MN > > > > MYRTLE G. r her family. All I have to go on so far is the following: > > MYRTLE G. IVERSON > Date of Birth: 05/23/1906 > Place of Birth: MINNESOTA > Mother Maiden Name: ARNTSON > Date of Death: 03/23/1978 You need to go do some census searching. But you also need to supply us with more information. What was her husband's name? What were her childrens names and where were they born? Do you know Myrtle's siblings? Someone must have known about her family in order to supply her mother's maiden name for the death certificate. Have you contacted the funeral home? Checked for other graves where she is buried? Have you sent for her Social Security application? Get the birth certificates for her children, which may show her maiden name and place of birth. I could look for some census for you, but need more info.
Hello list, I've updated my website with not only my own family information, but also some data that I've put together to hopefully help others. Here's what you'll find. 1. Of course my family info with copies of documents such as those that I found at the National Archives in DC in my great great grandfather Louis KIRCHER's (born in Weinsberg, Wurttemberg) Civil War Pension files. Included in those papers are sworn statements made by friends to aid in the pension eligibility research. 2. I own a few census index cds and have full access to ancestry.com/ancestry.co.uk and am willing to do look ups. Just click on the census image on my home page and it will take you to a page where there are directions to follow. Please follow them or I will not be able to answer your request. 3. Some inscriptions that I found on tombstones that were near those of my own family members in Fernwood Cemetery just outside of Philadelphia, PA. 4. The Last Wills of 4 WEINBERG/VINEYARD/VINYARD ancestors. They came from Lavern, Westphalia, Prussia to Cumberland County, New Jersey. 5. Four partial Ships' Lists all Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, PA. 1907 - 1910. Not all passengers were from England, so look them over for your ancestral names. 6. I transcribed 3 pages from the Philadelphia, PA. Orphan's Court Marriage Records Index 1885 - 1916. Many names there! 7. I put some old unknown photos from all over the world from ebay on my site in hopes that someone might find a relative there. If interested, you should be able to just right click on the enlarged photo and then left click on "Save Picture As". 8. Many fantastic useful free links. There are a few that provide limited access but still give you enough free information to start out with. I update the links monthly and mark new ones as NEW with bright red letters that you can not miss. 9. Photos of headstones at Fernwood Cemetery coming soon. the URL is... http://hometown.aol.com/ella12866/index.html Some of you might find accessing this URL a little easier, but the graphics don't line up right... http://members.aol.com/ella12866/index.html If you should have trouble accessing the page just please continue to try again later. It just means that a lot of people are trying to access it and I guess AOL can't handle the overload. I am sending this out to all of the lists that I belong to. I swear that I am giving the correct URL. Please forgive my multiple postings, but I think it's important that I let as many people know about my site as humanly possible. Please pass it on to everyone you know who is interested in genealogy who might be on a list that by some small miracle I don't belong to. There is definitely something there for everyone from beginner to expert. If you're reading this from a specific surname mailing list and you can't find the surname in any of the documents/transcriptions or family trees, send me an email. Most likely that means that the surname is in my family tree but just hasn't found a spot on my website yet. If you're reading this post off of a Geographic mailing list and no one on my website is from that area, then check the ships' lists for country/state/city of origin or final destination. If you don't find anything there, then again, email me. I have ancestors from there who didn't make it on my website yet. Happy hunting and good luck, Ella
