Hi Janet, How do you know of the siblings of Beda without knowing any birthdates? How do you know of her parents names? The more information you give us, the more we are able to help. It is just how genealogy works. :-)) Do you have a copy of her death certificate? Where did she die? Canada? USA? We need to know everything you know. I have already checked the Minnesota census and have found nothing much with the names given with the information you have given. Are these your relatives? Or someone you are helping? Grand Meadow, MN is in Mower county....just type in Minnesota Historical Societies on your server (google, yahoo, etc...) and go from there. What are you searching for on Mary Peterson? There is no 1890 census enumeration..... Cathie Lafe wrote: > Searching Mary Peterson born in Grand Meadow Nov 22, 1872. > d. Thief River, Pennington Co. Hi Janet, Would Beda have a birthdate? How are the two related? Husband and wife? Birthdates on the Hemmingsen's listed below? Are they from Norway or somewhere else? I am looking for descendents of two brothers from Sweden: Nils Anderson, born Nils Peter Andersson 1864, and Peter Anderson, born Per August Andersson in 1866. They both immigrated to America in 1882. We have reason to believe they came to Minnesota, because their father, Andrew Johnson, was there. Have found a Nils Anderson and a Peter Anderson in census reports in Sherburne and Marshall Counties. Pat .
Listers, About a month ago I offered to do one freebie birth lookup in each of nine counties; Brown, Dodge, Faribault, Martin, Mower, Steele, Wadena, Waseca, and Washington. I had takers in Faribault and Mower counties and I've posted my findings below. If you are interested in a lookup in any of the other seven counties, I'm still willing to do one of each "on the house". I want to learn more about the resources and need a guinea researcher or two. <smile> The films are at the Minnesota Historical Society. The Faribault County Birth Index is typewritten and contains no original records, however the system is fairly easy to follow and the lists are extensive. The index covers births from 1870 to 1915. Several pages I encountered had lines covered to conceal illegitimate births. The column headings are No., Date of Birth, Name (if any), Sex, Color, Place of Birth of Child, Full Christian Name of Each Parent, Birthplace of Each Parent, Occupation of Father, Name of Person Making the Return, and When Registered. Although I didn't look at them, there are also rolls of films for delayed birth registrations from 1863-1892. The request I received was to locate William Daniel Wallner who was reportedly born in 1880 or 1881. The records are in (roughly) chronological order, so along the way I encountered Wilhilmyna Wallner born April 30 1875, Anna Wallner born Nov 3 1877, and Ida E Wallner born Jun 2 1878. William Wallner appeared in Book A-1, pg 76, line 19. No 19, Born Aug 9 1880, Name William Wallner, Sex male, Color white, Place of Birth Minnesota Lake, Parents' Full Christian Names John G Wallner and Anna Wallner, Born Germany, Father's Occupation Farmer, no name given for person making the return, date registered was Jan 7, 1881. The Mower County Birth Index was handwritten and the film is faded so reading the text is a challenge. The names are alphabetical by first letter of the surname only and the dates skip back and forth. Births are recorded from 1870 to 1945 in a variety of ways. The request I received was to locate Leon Eugene Ellison, but I was unsuccessful in my attempts. The only Ellison listed in Book A was Anna Marie born Sept 27 1877 to Swan and Amelia J Ellison. Both parents were born in Norway. Swan was a blacksmith and Anna's birth was registered Jan 7, 1878. There was an Edward Christian Ellison who appeared among the delayed births; he was born March 6, 1908. I'll watch for any takers in the other seven counties and will gladly share my findings. The records were interesting to read and I would recommend them to anyone searching for an ancestor born in one of the counties listed above. I have checked out state censuses in Minnesota, Kansas, and Illinois and have found it well worth my time. (and it does take time as they are not indexed). If your "family" was living on a farm, make sure to check out whatever agricultural censuses are available as they really give a detailed look at the farm life of the time. Does Minnesota have agricultural censuses? I know that Kansas and Illinois do. Helene Leaf

The 1857 census is considered a Federal census because it was taken to determine if there were enough people to make Minnesota Territory into a state. And, yes, they "padded" the numbers! Are these state census online somewhere ? Thank you Catherine
You can see some of the transcribed 1857 MN census (for Nicollet co.) here: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mn/nicollet/census/1857/nicoll57.txt I think it was 1857 census where the census takers actually made up some communities that were totally non-existant. They wanted to create enough population in MN to gain statehood. Kathy "Jean R.
