    3. Hi Knut, You should try this person to make a connection. Edward L Hawkinson, 1101 N 7th Ave, Virginia, MN 55792 (218) 741-4372, Here is the death of Alice, Marit's daughter: WILLIAMS, ALICE MARGUERITE CertID# 1995-MN-035936 Date of Birth: 10/14/1901 Place of Birth: MINNESOTA Mother Maiden Name: SOKNESS Date of Death: 12/02/1995 County of Death: ST. LOUIS In the 1930 census, Mable Hawkinson is single and a school teacher living in Virginia, MN. In the 1930 census, Arnold Hawkinson is married and has two daughters. He is manager of a auto agency. His wife is named Stella A. and his two daughters are Jean M. 5 1/2 and Norma L. 4. In the 1930 census John Hawkinson is married to Mable and has a 2 year old son John. He lives in Crow Wing County at Crosby, MN. He is a medical doctor in general practice. ANDREW HAWKINSON. Andrew Hawkinson, one of the prominent business men of Virginia, St. Louis county, Minnesota, is a man of exceptional ability and has made a place for himself by his honest and energetic labors. Mr. Hawkinson was born on a farm in Sweden, in 1857. His father, Hawkin Anderson, was a miller by occupation and lived and died in Sweden. The mother of our subject was also a native of Sweden. Of a family of six children, four sons and two daughters, Andrew Hawkinson was the first born. He gained his education in the public schools and at the age of fourteen years started for himself. He worked at farm work for two summers. When twenty-two years of age he left his native land for America, landing at New York April 12, 1880. He went to Elk Rapids, Michigan, and there worked for an iron manufacturer and for six weeks was in the wood kiln for a blast furnace. He then went to Marquette, Michigan, and later to Lake Superior and spent five months in the woods near Michagama, cutting cord wood. He then followed iron mining near Ishpeming, Michigan, and later was fireman for six months and finally took charge of the hoisting engine. He worked thus two years and never had an accident. He then run the air compressor for the same company one year. In 1884 he went to Tower, Minnesota, where he operated a stationary engine for the Minnesota Iron Company one year. He then secured employment in a grocery store to become familiar with mercantile pursuits, and he followed that about two years, when he changed his position to that of clerk in a hardware store and worked thus about three years, becoming thoroughly versed in the hardware business. His employer, P. Richwine, failed in business and Mr. Hawkinson was placed in charge of the stock for the creditors and disposed of the same. He purchased what remained of the stock after satisfying the creditors and in partnership with N. J. Benson started in the business. He finally enlarged the stock and successfully conducted business there under the firm name of Benson & Hawkinson four years. In the fall of 1894 he went to Virginia, Minnesota, and opened a branch store, one of the first hardware stores in the town. The partnership with Mr. Benson was dissolved in 1895, and Mr. Hawkinson became owner of the business in Virginia, in which he has since engaged. Fire destroyed his building and contents, including the stock, household goods, furniture and clothing, in 1900 and he had but the lots and a small insurance left. Four days later he again opened for business with a new stock, conducting the business in a shanty until November of the same year, when his present fine business block was completed. This is of solid brick and the upper floor is used for society purposes. His hardware store and tin shop occupies twenty-eight by eighty feet and he rents out twenty-one by sixty feet of the space for a jewelry store. Mr. Hawkinson owns a residence and lot in Tower, Minnesota, and is one of the prosperous business men of St. Louis county. Our subject was married in 1885 to Miss Mary Sokness. Mrs. Hawkinson was born in Trondhjem, Norway, and came to America in 1883. Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hawkinson, namely: Eva, Harry, Carl, Arnold, Mable, Johnnie and Effie. Mr. Hawkinson is prominent in local public affairs, and has served five years as city treasurer. He is a Republican in political sentiment. 3. Since Annette is only 20 and they don't have any children yet, I would guess that they just got married. Since the record you are after is pre-1900, it should be at the county courthouse. It may also have been microfilmed and you could find film at the MN History Center (http://www.mnhs.org) or at your local LDS library. Most counties have allowed their records to be microfilmed. (thank goodness) scroll down for the links into county courthouse information for each county: http://www.vitalrec.com/mn.html 1880 Census Place Ortonville, Big Stone, Minnesota Family History Library Film 1254615 NA Film Number T9-0615 Page Number 225C J.A. 3. I'd try to narrow down where they were living at the time of their marriage first. Try using finding them in the Census of 1880, 1870. www.familysearch.org has that census online for free. If they married in Minneapolis or St. Paul, you'll have to go to the County Recorder's office to get the records. The MN Historical doesn't have them. If they aren't in Minneapolis or St. Paul, the census record will help you narrow down where they were living. 3. Have found my Grandmother Annette Carlson in the United States Cencus of 1880 living in Ortonville, Minnesota and already married to my Grandfather John August Carlson. Found that she died in Minneapolis, Minnesota and even where she is buried but have not been sucessful in finding a marriage license for my Grandparents. Could someone tell me where to look for this? My guess is that the years would have been between 1875 and 1880. Thanks. Annette Carlson Tucker.
