This genealogy poem is my gift to everyone for Mother's Day. I think many of you will be able to relate to it. (My poetry has been published in 47 US States, and several other countries. ) My Poetry Website: http://users.rosenet.net/poetryandroses/ (This remains one of my favorite poems) MY ANCESTOR GRAND MOTHER I search for you yet do not even know your name I press on praying my efforts will prove fruitful the records do not list you or the other women who have lived and loved and laughed, gave birth, and died, the records perpetrate the myth that you were never here but I stand whole and bare my soul and vow to find you as I live I search for you in old records, in churches, at the Embassy, in small dimly lit rooms in the back of obscure libraries and archives and pour over barely readable handwritten ledgers with magnifying glass and flashlight I live on mainly toast these days there isn't time for meals or much sleep feeling as I always do, on the very brink of discovery Perhaps THIS will be the day I find the one seemingly insignificant clue, which will lead me to you although I did not find you listed in the Census Records I am not deterred, you may turn up yet, on an Immigration or Naturalization list somewhere perhaps, or maybe tucked away inside some bank of vital statistics, long forgotten like so many others, your name having become lost over the long years Your name could be lying even now amidst the millions of documents stored and locked away safeguarded in the bowels of a giant warehouse all stopped up from apathetic crowds who have long ceased their visits your precious name, lying just inside a myriad of records packed in tight, packed in to stay never guessing I would come @Sarah Elizabeth Rose srose@rosenet.net

Hi everyone This week I put 24 new funeral cards online. They are for people who lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, England, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and (unforunately) several from unknown locations in the USA. To see the list of all Funeral Cards with their birth and death information, go to http://ancestorsatrest.com/funeral_cards/ I also uploaded 3 new obituaries. Two are sisters from Iowa and one has a funeral card with it. These sisters were born in Minnesota, lived in Missouri and died in Iowa. One was a man born in Germany living in Hartford Connecticut. I did some looking in census records and found a lot on the two families, I've added my notes to their information. See http://ancestorsatrest.com/obit_records/ Also see my Cemetery section for 2 new cemeteries - one in Middlesex County Ontario (Canada) and one in Michigan. See http://ancestorsatrest.com/cemetery_records/ Coffin Plates - I managed to find and upload a few more, for folks in New Jersey and Vermont. Coffin Plates contain death and sometimes birth information, you can check these out at http://ancestorsatrest.com/coffin_plates/ If you want to search by location instead, you can start at http://ancestorsatrest.com/deaths_by_location.shtml Have fun and if you know where any of the 'unknown location' death records lived, just let me know and i will add that info to the pages Brian -- Ancestors at Rest http://AncestorsAtRest.com/ The Genealogy Spot http://www.TheGenealogySpot.com/

Thanks Anna, Barb and Jean who answered my question about the meaning of "5-1/pf 5" and 2-C, 2-R etc in the census records. Barb gave me this explanation, and it makes sense: The 5-1 at the head of household refers to the number of people in the family, and I assume that the 1 means one family.~ The 2-C,2-R, means 2 children, 2 relatives. You'll notice that some families have other relatives in the home, such as mother, father-in-law, nephew, etc.~ I haven't figured out what the "pf-5" means, but it's always the same number as the total in the household. Barb Still the "pf-5" hasn't been explained, but thanks, all of you! Roland
I appreciate any help you can give me .Many of you have sent information on my ancestors. This first part I am quite sure is correct : My grandfather, WILLIAM ELMER SMITH was born abt 1864, died in 1922 in St. Petersburg, FL., married in 1888 MINNIE SNOW, born abt 1868 in OH,died 1894. William's father was OBADIAH B SMITH, born abt 1843 in OH, married SARAH SWINEHART, born abt 1844 in OH. They had 3 children : William Elmer, EARL, born 1869 in MI; and GRACIE, born abt 1875. Some of the following is "guess-work" : They moved around a lot , back and forth, from Windom, MN. to OH, to PA. 1880 census gave Obadiah. Do you think census for 1850 or 1860 will show Obadaih or his wife, Sarah Swinehart or maybe THEIR parents ? Thank you.Patricia CARR McDonald pmcdonald@acun.com
