    1. RE: [MINNESOTA] TERHELL, ALEXANDER, PETERSEN
    2. I found that entry in 1880 also. I also found a Bertha Alexander in the 1920 census, married to David O. Alexander. Mother b. Minnesota, father Germany, mother Illinois which may be one of the Terhell's that were born in Illinois from the 1880 census. I then checked the birth records for one of the children listed in the 1920 census belonging to the Alexanders and found a Catherine D which is about the age of the Katherine D listed on the census. On the birth record it lists the mother's name as Thorgerson or Thargerson. I tried going back to the census at that point to find a Bertha Thorgerson and can't find one. There are also some Simonet or Simmonet's associated with the Terhell name. Hi list, > the above site has been updated with various records covering Settlement,Bastardy,Apprentice,Removal etc. Derbyshire based it contains many names of folks from other counties who for one reason or another had a connection ,however tenuous with Derbyshire. There are references to named pupils leaving school and leaving for America, Canada, mention of persons baptised in India and Wills making mention of folks who were living in Australia and NZ. as well as the United States, including, one from your State, and Canada. There is also a Miscellany section, again mentioning folks with Derbyshire connections who were living overseas. It is an on-going list and is frequently updated. It may be you have no Derbyshire connections, I expect most of you will not have, however a lot of you will have English ancestors and the above site will give you an idea of just what may be found in certain documents in English Record Offices. And you never know what you may find. It is the people you can't find that you want the most. It may just be your lost great Aunt Mabel is here. ! 2. I certainly agree about the lookups from sources not readily available. More than once, people have done lookups in books that they owned, and provided me information I was not finding in the usual places. I wrote to Vital Statistics to obtain a death certificate for my great grandfather, and was told they had none. Someone who had in her possesion a copy of some kind of a city directory of deaths did a lookup for me and found the death date, and other info on my great gandfather's. With that, I was able to write the Vital statistics Dept back with a specific date of death, and they sent me the death certificate. I have since been able to locate his grave, the address where he lived, his naturalization records, and his ships records. Whatever would we do without volunteers. They are indeed genealogy angels. 2. There is a way to sort the favorites on AOL, but I'm sure the procedures vary from one ISP to another. You might check with yours for instructions. I don't trust my links to AOL tho, and find it difficult to even find my sorted links thru their filing method. Instead, I have set up files in my word processor. I first set up a main folder that I call Genealogy. In that file folder, I have set up many sub folders for my various areas of genealogy research, such as Military Records, Death & Grave Records, Church Records, etc.. For example, in the folder that I've named "Death & Grave Records", I have whatever separate pages I need for sorting links for finding Cemeteries, finding funeral records, links where you can search for SSDI records, etc. Filing links this way allows you to store them together with other information that pertains to the same topic, or short notes to yourself about the various sites. I may add notes to a page that would include suggestions or comments made by other list members on what information can be found on a certain website, or how valuable the site was in certain circumstances. I hope I've helped to give you some ideas on what might work for you in sorting your website links. 1. Re: [MINNESOTA] Record Search
    2. Jeanine, I too store lots of links, both to share with others, and for when I begin searching a new person. People become quite familiar with a topic of study each time they search for an ancestor, and may learn new websites for that topic such as finding military records, finding church records, or learning about adoptions in earlier times. The links that one becomes familiar with may totally escape someone else. Everytime we share something we know, chances are, there are many others out there who didn't know anything about the subject. I have lots of website links for my genealogy work, and with a huge ancestry on both sides of my family, I know I will have to eventually return to some links many times over. I even store my links in separate categories in word processor files to make them easier to find when I need them. I do hope many other listers will agree that sharing the links in their responses will be a big benefit to us all. I just thought other researchers might be interested in it. I just visited it for the first time today. http://www.kinsource.com/ One of the most interesting features is that they've transcribed a lot of the 1885 MN state census and it's available online for a small fee ($9 for a month or 6 mths for $25). This is what's completed so far: http://www.kinsource.com/Subscribe/ks1885transcription.htm They've made the Rice County - City of Faribault - Ward 2 searchable for free so that you can see what sorts of info the 1885 MN state census had in it. There are other interesting (free) things there as well. Kathy

    3. From the Perham Bulletin, Dated Thursday Morning, May 11, 1893 On the Front page. New Postoffice Rules Postmaster Butler has handed in the following rules adopted at the recent convention: A pair of onions will go for two cents ink bottles must be corked when sent by mail. Persons are compelled to lick their own postage stamps and envelopes; the postmaster cannot be compelled to do this. Persons are earnestly requested not to send postal cards with money orders inclosed, as large sums of money are lost that way. Nitro glycerine must be forwarded at the risk of the sender. If it should blow up in the postmaster’s hands he cannot be held responsible. When letters are received bearing no direction the person for whom they are intended will please signify the fact to the postmaster that they may at once be forwarded. As all postmasters are expert linguists the address may be written in Chinese or Chectaw. It is unsafe to mail apple or fruit trees with the fruit on them. It is earnestly requested that lovers writing to their girls will please confine their gushing rhapsodies to the inside of the envelope. Ducks cannot be sent through the mail when alive. The quacking would disturb the slumbers of the clerks on the postal cars. When watches are sent through the mail, if the sender will please put a notice on the outside, the postmasters will wind and keep in running order. John Smith gets his mail from 574,270 post offices, hence a letter addressed to John Smith, United States, will reach him. When you send a money order in a letter always write full and explicit directions in the same letter so that any person getting the letter can draw the money. Alligators over ten feet in length are not allowed to be transmitted by mail. The placing of stamps up side down on stamps is prohibited.
