If anyone has the following CD from ancestry: City Directories: Northern Midwest 1884-98 would they contact me directly? I don't need a lookup, thank you. I have a few questions about this CD. Jolene Kelly Pillars- Mesick, MI famlyfndr@coslink.net Volunteer for RAOGK at http://www.raogk.org/
Ancestry.com has 281 DeRushas listed in the 1910 census, with that exact spelling. 42 of the 281 are in MN. I'm sure there are probably many more if the spelling is varied from there. Since you mention Canada, but didn't give any first names, I'm going to guess that you are after a family in Cloquet Ward 2, Carlton, MN. 1910 United States Federal Census > Minnesota > Carlton > Cloquet Ward 2 > District 38 36 8th Street 144 149 Derusha, Dave, head, m, w, 46, m1, 23, French Canada, French Canada, French Canada, common labor, saw mill Alphonsine, wife, f, w, 43, m1, 23, 3 children, 3 living, French Canada, French Canada, French Canada Clara, daughter, f, w, 22, m1, 1, French Canada, French Canada, French Canada Virginia, daughter, f, w, 19, s, French Canada, French Canada, French Canada Eps, daughter, f, w, 17, s, French Canada, French Canada, French Canada There are several more Derusha families in Cloquet, Carlton Co., MN in 1910. But at least these Derusha children were born in Canada. The addition of French loosely indicates that maybe it's the eastern part of Canada. 1901 Canadian census: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/020122_e.html It's best to read the introduction to the 1901 Canadian census before trying to search out your relatives: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/02012206_e.html If any of your DeRushas were naturalized in MN, you may be able to acquire their naturalization records through this place: http://www.ironrangeresearchcenter.org/genealogy/collections/naturalization/ Post 1900 naturalization records tend to have more useful information on them than pre-1900 records. If any of your DeRushas married in Carlton Co. I would check into county level records or church records for the marriage. Quite often they will name the bride and groom's birth locations. Dottie, Why don't you put your information on the list with names and dates of all you know about your DeRusha family. It would make it easier for us to help you. I have problems with earlier Census material for age too. Not just with one family member but several. I know through other documented facts from Ohio, every census up until 1840 or 1860, gave inaccurate ages (for the most part) for my one particular family member. Anywhere from 2 - 3 years off up to 12 years off. I learned recently that individuals documenting in the early census had training but might have asked the wrong person for information. That particular individual could of been a neighbor giving details to the enumerator. Maybe a relative suffering from dementia. Whoever it was, they didn't concern themselves with correct age. I've had many an unreliable relative give information to me, who did not necessarily mean to be inaccurate however, the question obviously baffled them. I still glean information of locations, facts and tiny details from the censuses. Viewing (for the most part) the place of birth is correct. From that section of any census, tons of information. I question every census. I still find inaccurate information however, it turns me into a Genealogy Detective and a mystery to solve. What happened to them? Where did they go? Why did they go? The movement of migrant / immigrant / emigrant people in this new country, I love the hunt. I like puzzles too, connecting family dots is just as fun. Shelia

The 1885 Minnesota State census is being transcribed. There is a small fee to access the census data at this website: http://kinsource.com/index.htm It looks like most of the Counties have been completed. Here is the page with subscription information. http://kinsource.com/MinnesotaCensus/Census1885Fr.htm The census fee is very minimal. $9.00 for a 30 day trial and $25.00 for 6 mos. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Van Essen" <vanes002@umn.edu> To: <MINNESOTA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2006 1:54 AM Subject: Re: [MINNESOTA] Halbostad entries in the 1885-1895 Minnesota State Census > On Wed, 26 Apr 2006, Betty Ann <bamedhat@telus.net> wrote: >> Hi >> >> I live in Canada and would really be interested in knowing where it >> might be possible for me to access the Minnesota 1885 and 1895 State >> Censuses. > > The state censuses are all available on microfilm at the Minnesota > History Center in St. Paul. Hi I live in Canada and would really be interested in knowing where it might be possible for me to access the Minnesota 1885 and 1895 State Censuses. I am desperately looking for any and all entries for my direct ancestry Halbostad (Holbostad, etc.) name in those two censuses. While I do have information on our Halbostad cousins that were in Murray County, my lineage were more mobile and have appeared in Lyon, Cass, and Hennepin Counties. It appears that they may have migrated through Douglas, Anoka, Dakota and/or Ramsey Counties. I believe the 1885 and 1895 censuses might be able to fill in the gap between finding them in the 1880 Federal census in Lyon County and their appearance in Cass County in 1900. They were from Norway and always appear to live in proximity to their cousins, the Halle and Carrie Rosendal family. Would be very grateful for any and all information and/or assistance regarding these two State censuses. Thank you for your time and consideration. Betty Ann
