Could you perhaps list some first names and then, perhaps, an explaination of surnames? In general, parents named their children after a deceased relative or hero. In some way the child was believed to inherit with the name the gifts or personality of their namesake: this belief almost seems to have been one of reincarnation of the named relative in the new child once the name was bestowed. It was very common to give children the names of honored relatives, for the Northmen believed that children would partake of the virtues of the ones whose names they bore. Relatives recently dead, in particular, were thus remembered by their kindred, a custom resulting from a half belief that the spirit of the beloved dead lived again in the little child. Present day Scandinavians still "call up" deceased members of their families in this manner. (Social Scandinavia p. 61). The religious basis of the practice was that a departed ancestor is reborn and again rejoins the living members of the family if his/her name is given to the new-born child. Only the departed ancestor was, therefore, renamed so long as the belief was a living force.... Originally the naming of the first two sons must have been very varied; it could have been after the father only in a small proportion of cases, or after an uncle in perhaps a somewhat larger proportion of cases; or again the child might be named after some other relative of the parents, as a cousin. Undoubtedly, however, it was a grandparent in a relatively large number of cases. If one or more of the grandparents were dead the old belief would practically decree it and filial love would perpetuate the practice after the belief no longer existed in its old form. As long as the old belief continued the cases of renamings of the child's great grandparent would undoubtedly dominate, but as soon as it ceased to be believed that reincarnation of the departed in the child took place with the bestowal of the name of the deceased, the possibilities for new forms of the practice were at once at hand. Esten Hugdal was my gguncle from Sor Trondelag, Norway. He and his wife emigrated to Wisconsin in 1888. The family lived in the Soknedal/Storen area, south of Trondheim. Nord Trondelag and Sor Trondelag totally embrace Trondheim in Central Norway. In Norway. They have Farm and Family History Books called Bygdeboks. Many of us have some of these. As yet, I have not found Olina Hugdal Oien, Bertha Hugdal Moen or Olaf Hugdahl, but I am searching. It would be my guess that their given names would be Olava and Berit. I cannot help you with Olga and Alfred, but I would guess that he is a Swedish SteEn. The Hugdal/Hugdahls were definitely Tronders. I would suggest that you stay on this list, because I will be back to talk to you. But, also subscribe to the Trondelag List. It is made up on "Tronders" in both of the Trondelag areas above and people related to Trondelag fylkes (counties) and also from other parts of Norway. Julius Ferdinand Zimmermann was born near Hamburg, Germany 27 Aug. 1836. His first marriage was to Caroline Fredrickson. She was born 20 April 1841 and died 26 June 1877. She is buried at Ixonia, Jefferson Co. WI. Julius then married Alvina (maiden name unknown). Julius and Caroline had the following children: Fredrick Carl, Wilhelm Julius, **Ferdinand, Jr., Amelia (or Emilia), Robert, Charles and August. Julius and Alvina had one daughter, Augusta. **In Bellingham, Minnesota, Ferdinand August Julius Zimmermann married Ida Krakow, daughter of Justina Schmidt and Gottlieb Krakow. Justina Schmidt was born 2 Sept 1843 and died 27 Jan 1914. Gottlieb Krakow was born 7 Apr 1838 and died 13 Aug 1917. The Zimmermann family came from near Hamburg Germany in 1869. The Krakow family came from Richnau near Schoensel, District Thoren, West Prussia in 1885. Ferdinand and Ida were the parents of 10 children: Esther, Elmer, Doris, Leona, Freida, Ruth, Ervin, Rosa, Alfred and Elta. I am in search of further information on relatives of these families and their connection to the Bellingham, Minnesota area. I am searching for the family of Peter VNUK and his wife Elisabeth "Lizzy" Ruder Vnuk. Peter was born circa 1881, and Lizzy was born 26 Oct. 1887 in Merrill, Lincoln County, WI. They had a son Peter born January 13, 1922 in Wausau, Marathon County, WI, and a daughter Helen Marie 1915-1916. On Ancestry.com I have located a Peter Vnuk born 2 Oct. 1881 and died June 1963 in Minnesota (no location given), and his Social Security was issued out of Wisconsin in 1951. Found in the Chippewa County Book: They were married in Iowa in 1897 and moved to a farm in Swift County in 1900. They later moved their family to Chippewa County where the neighborhoods spoke more English, not al of the Norwegian. This may not be the Dodd, but an interesting story. Ardell

Yellow Medicine History lists an Eli Barber a member of the Renville Rangers in 1866. It also gives a short biography of the man in Minnesota Falls Township in YM County. He was an active businessman and died in 1916. There is also a George and Arthur Barber--page 641.There is also mention of a Milton Barber, killed in WW 11. There are no Dodds listed in the History Book of Yellow Medicine County. Echo Village and Echo Township are both listed, but no cemetery information There is an Echo Village and Lutheran Cemeteries mention. My suggestion is to go to the Yellow Medicine GenWeb page and contact Cathy Paulson, the webmistress. She also has the Renville GenWeb, so that should cover it. Much of the information concerning Echo in the book was submitted by Ethel Dirnberger. (Sylvester) CHAMBERLAIN, b. 4 July 1861 somewhere in Maine, parents unknown (This is a long time brick wall - can anyone help?) m. 21 Aug 1883 in Anoka, MN Elizabeth H. (Hannah) MILTON (b. 13 March 1862 in Jackson Brook, Washington County, ME to Edward and Mary Ann (MILLIGAN) MILTON, d. 4 June 1928 in Minneapolis General Hospital, Minneapolis MN) William d. 21 Aug 1935 in Hopkins Village, MN. In the 1885 Census, they were living in Elk River, Sherburne County MN, with 2 children: - Annie (? the handwriting was bad) age 3, F, born in MN (This is another brick wall - she never shows up again, and she was apparently born a year prior to their marriage.) - An infant 6 months old, shown as female, but probably was really my grandfather George William Chamberlain. By the 1895 census, they had been living in the City of Anoka for 3 years, 7 months, and Annie was no longer with them. After that, they were in Anoka. He came to US with wife Charlotte, age 26, B: Sept. 18 1861 and son Carl age 2 B: Sept. 12 1885. According to ships record they were headed for Worthington in Nobles Co. this was Oct. 1887.
