----- Original Message ----- From: Laura Johnson To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, September 01, 2002 9:38 AM Subject: [Italy] Boycott Ellis Island Website Boycott Ellis Island Website http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ Many of you are familiar with the Ellis Island records website but you may not be familiar with Steve Morse. Steve created a front end or gateway to make it much easier to search the Ellis Island records site. He had this gateway up at: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html . He offered many other parameters to search the Ellis Island site and it was remarkably user friendly in it's ease of use and search options. In fact it is the front end that Ellis Island records should have offered to begin with. Steve did a remarkable job and it's my opinion that he should have been hired by them rather than be threatened by them since he obviously has a much better grasp of what is actually needed than the people that designed the site. Ellis Island records org. has decided that Steve Morse is in violation of their terms of use and has notified him of such. He feels that it is not in violation but has taken the website down because he does not have the resources to fight them. If they feel this is cutting into their revenue, why not just ask Steve to put up a banner on his site encouraging donations or membership to the Ellis Island org.? I am including two letters here that can be copied and pasted and sent to (1) the Ellis Island records org and (2) to the sponsors of the Ellis Island site requesting that they change their position on the terms of use and Steve Morse's site and that they restore 'right click' functionality to the Ellis Island records website. ============================= Letter to the Ellis Island Records Org. and the National Park Service note * please copy and paste this letter to a new email and send one copy to: [email protected] and one to the National Park Service at: [email protected] --------------------------------------------- To whom it may concern, This is to inform you that I will be boycotting your website at: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ and will encourage all my friends and other genealogy groups to do the same until you change your position and allow Steve Morse's website at: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html to operate. I don't believe he is in violation of your terms of use and I feel the public would be better served if he were hired by you to provide a search engine rather than being threatened by you. I am also requesting that you restore 'right click' functionality to your website. I will no longer donate to your organization, join your service or purchase products you offer. I am also notifying the sponsors listed on your website that I will be boycotting their products and services until this situation is resolved. Shame on you. This isn't how Ellis Island, the National Park Service or the memories of our ancestors should be represented. Sincerely Disappointed (your sig and email addy) ------------------------- =============================== =============================== Letter to the sponsors listed on the Ellis Island site. email addresses included at end of message. ----------------------------------------------- To whom it may concern, You are currently a sponsor listed on the Ellis Island Records website at: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ and this email is to inform you that I will be boycotting your products or services and urging my friends to do so also. This is in response to Ellis Island Records Org. decision to notify Steve Morse ( http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html ) that his website is in violation of their terms of use. I feel Steve Morse was not in violation of the terms of use and provided a service that Ellis Island org should have provided themselves. It is also in response to their decision to disable 'right click' functionality on their website. Until these issues are resolved and you remain a sponsor, I will no longer purchase your products, use any services you offer or visit your website. I am sincerely disappointed in the actions of the Ellis Island Records organization and am sorry it needs to reflect upon your company in such a negative manner. Dear List Members: I feel that this is an appropriate time to post to the list an excerpt of the "Welcome Letter". Sorry that it seems lengthy, but it seems an appropriate time to post for everyone's benefit. Please treat each list member as you wish to be treated. There are, however, some common sense practices and Rootsweb Rules for this list to follow. Information on Rootsweb's ongoing and proposed genealogical programs, and how you can help to support and expand these efforts can be viewed at: < http://www.rootsweb.com/> If you have a problem or cannot access the URL site, please contact me personally and I will be very happy to provide the RootsWeb information, privately. With your added support and input, we can make this list a friendly, pleasant and exciting site to discuss our ancestors from the near and distant past and perhaps provide or receive a missing link. Through Rootsweb sites, such as this one, I have found some wonderful people that have turned out to be my cousins and great friends, as well. PLEASE KEEP THIS MESSAGE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. If you will print it, it may prove helpful in the future. NOW!!!...Rootsweb Rules........ DO NOT send Spam e-mail messages to the mailing list. DO NOT send attachments (attached files) of any sort to the mailing lists. This includes URL shortcuts, v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files or any other type of attachment. DO NOT forward virus hoaxes or chain letters to mailing lists. DO NOT use HTML or RTF (rich text format, such as colored text and/or colored background) in messages sent to mailing lists. DO NOT crosspost messages to multiple mailing lists on the address to line or the Cc line of the e-mail message. DO NOT send e-mail messages to the mailing list for which the topic is inappropriate, such as political announcements, current events, missing children reports, test messages, jokes, etc. DO NOT "flame" other members of this mailing list. Common Sense Rules There are some common sense DOs and DON'Ts for this list, as follows: 1.) DO post all follow-up responses to the list for the benefit of all those interested and for archival purposes. 2.) DO NOT post idle chitchat messages to the list or someone might yell at you. 3.) DO NOT send messages greater than 20,000 bytes (20KB) to the list. They will not be processed. 4.) DO have fun and generate some excitement in searching for and finding your ancestors and new cousins. You will probably enjoy an additional benefit of also making some great friends too. NOTE: Please DO NOT ever send anything to this list that even resembles a “commercial ad”, genealogical or otherwise. I respect the fact that we are all zealous about our favorite cause, however, this is not the appropriate forum for advertising that cause. Likewise, any advertising for records, books, publications, CD’s, etc., will not be tolerated. Due to a trend to abuse members of other lists, with such advertising, it must be restricted from this list. This restriction is not to be construed as meaning that sources cannot be shared on the list. They can be and in fact are encouraged. Any information that can be provided to our members to assist our research is always welcome. I feel sure that we can all distinguish between an attempt to assist another member of the list and the abuse of the list with a “commercial ad”. AND PLEASE do post any Minnesota related information that is passed on to you or discovered by you in your research which may benefit other list members, now and in the future, even though this information may not be related to your line. When posting this information, if possible, please include any document and/or source information that you might have. This is your list. Please feel free to comment on any information that is posted to this list, within the aforementioned guidelines. Anyone receiving a rude message from anyone on this list, please forward the entire message to me for action. By forwarding to me for private action, we can avoid any flaming, or confrontations on the list. This list is for us to gain valuable information and to enjoy and even enhance our genealogy experience. We won't allow anyone to interfere with those goals. If you have any suggestions, comments, questions, or problems, concerning this list, please feel free to contact me privately. If you need assistance, I will do my best to help you. However, comments, pro or con, that are of general membership interest should be posted to the list. 7. HAVE FUN!!! Come on and join in and post your Minnesota links and surnames or any other appropriate Minnesota information. Again, WELCOME to the list! Jerry and Scarlett, List Administrators

OK .. OK .. Enough already Apparently what was meant to be helpful has been turned into a "hate mail" campaign by certain "list owners" .... as the two quoted below indicate I do not tolerate being "talked down to", or being roasted for what should have been seen as an attempt to INFORM .... Maybe the entire email shouldn't have been sent .. but it WAS End of story as far as I'm concerned ...... do what you will Ciao .. Sayonara ... It is because you have been a longtime list admin that I hold you to a higher standard than I would someone who might not know better. And the RootsWeb abuse address doesn't need to be mailbombed by tons of spam copies because you decide everyone should send it there. It is only because YOU sent the spam that everyone received it. [email protected] only needs to see ONE copy of spam being addressed to our lists even if there is a spam message they need to see. Only the list admins need know about this as it only affects admins . ....... snip ........ Also, on lists you do not admin it isn't your place to be handling matters that are administrative in nature. The MEIER list is for MEIER genealogy--not for Nigerian scams and how to handle them. The same holds true for every other list you sent the scam letter to--those lists are genealogy lists--not scam lists and the admins of those lists won't appreciate your action any more than I do. > dick wrote: > > SPAM: -------------------- Start SpamAssassin results ---------------------- > > SPAM: This mail is probably spam.
