I had 2 gr grandmothers that died in St. Peter's hospital and I had to send a letter to the historical society stating how I was related and why I wanted their information. They gave me the okay and I was given access to the books from the hospital but was told that I could only look at information concerning my relative. It was quite interesting as I was able to read and copy the notes that the nurses kept. Drop them an email or a letter. Sandy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Jane Yes, it is my understanding that the records are also available for the other "State Hospitals". I do not have addresses for them, but I did find the following phone numbers in the Mpls directory Anoka Metro RTC -- 763-712-4000 Fergus Falls RTC -- 218-739-7200 St Peter RTC/MN Security Hospital -- 507-931-7100 Willmar RTC -- 320-231-5329 The Security Hospital at St Peter is for prisoners and the records may or may not be available, I have no idea about criminal records. Moose Lake Regional State Operated Services (might have info on the old Moose Lake State Hospital) -- 218-485-5300 Brainerd Regional Human Services Center may have info on the old Brainerd State Hospital -- 218-828-2201 MN Extended Treatment Options - Cambridge; this may be the location of the old Cambridge State Hospital and maintain those records -- 763-689-7256 I hope this information is helpful to folks. You will need to be able to provide evidence of a family relationship, it may even have to be direct line, of that I can't be certain. So many people ended up in these facilities for reasons that would be totally unheard of today. If I recall correctly from some of my old training, some people that were just plain indigent ended up in these places. That is always helpful to remember so that we don't all assume we must have a line of insanity running in our blood. There are some sad stories out there. Jo Hogle

Hi, I read with interest the reply to the Minnesota Genealogy List the information on the Anoka State Hospital. Would you know if information might be available from other Minnesota Mental Hospitals? I have two ancestors who lived in two such institutions: Wilmer State Hospital and Saint Peters State Hospital. Both are deceased now. I am a direct descendent of both of them and the eldest living next of kin. I would very much wish to see some medical records. Thanks, Jane
