    1. Interlibrary Loan Minnesota Newspapers
    2. I live in Michigan and requested my librarian interlibrary loan the reels for the Newspapers from Marshall MN, for the time period 1873 to 1880. I know the newspaper changed it's name during that time. I read them, rather quickly, when I was at the Minnesota Historical Library. I now would like to look at them again. My librarian must have contacted the Minnesota Historical Society Library and was told they do not Interlibrary Loan the reels for the newspapers they have. Is there some other organization that does Minnesota Newspaper microfilm Interlibrary Loans. Thanks for your help. Susanne

    3. You can check here: http://www.ironrangeresearchcenter.org/genealogy/ However he did not get Naturalization papers under the name John Leeby in Minnesota. He could have gotten them under his name without the farm name Leeby included. He might have gotten one set in North Dakota it appears, you need to give more information. 3. Thanks Margit, I had found the North Dakota info, but it didn't agree with anything else I have found. The only other info I have at this time is from his obit and the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. Unfortunately, the census information is inconsistent, and the obit gives few dates and those don't agree with the census. Based on the 1900 census, I was thinking that he may have started the process in Minnesota. 3. Meridian lines run north and south. Here's a good page that shows how to figure out the township & section numbering system: http://www.outfitters.com/genealogy/land/twprangemap.html I have a Faribault county plat map online. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnfariba/images/plat/faribault_co.jpg If you stare along the top border of that plat map you'll see that the western most range is 28. So you can guess that the land you are looking for will be one to two miles *west* of the western most edge of Faribault county. Now tip your head to the left and read along the western edge of the Faribault county plat map. Notice the "T104." That's the township 104 notation. I see that T138N runs along the southern edge of Becker county. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnbecker/townships.htm So I *think* the land you are looking for is in western Cass county. I'm guessing it's in that chain of lakes just west of Pine River. A Cass county plat map would determine that for you. Did Ellen marry A. W. Cook and Julia marry Fred Freer? http://www2.whidbey.net/forrest/pub/web/roam59a.html Had a card from Mr. and Mrs. Fred Freer and Mrs. A. W. Cook of Heron Lake who were spending a short vacation at Hot Springs, Ark. The ladies are sisters and former Lake Wilson residents. Mrs. Cook (Ellen Halbostad) became interested in hospital work in her home town several years ago. The city council turned over the running of the city hospital to a board of competent women and men and Ellen is a member. She had been chairman of this group which had done a wonderful job. The women on the board are in touch at all times with qualified and willing helpers who can be had when needed and when the crisis is over they return to their homes. The hospital has been in the black lots more times than it has been in the red. Ellen used to baby sit for us in the old days at Lake Wilson Kathy Betty Ann wrote: > > Hello > > I am new to this list and haven't had much success finding records > regarding my great grandfather Christian P. 3. Hello I am new to this list and haven't had much success finding records regarding my great grandfather Christian P. Halbostad in Minnesota. What I do know, or think I know, is that Christian Halbostad was born in about 1856 in Hoylandet, Norway, and emigrated with several relatives on the Allan Line S/S Caspian, arriving in Halifax, Canada 20 May 1881. Their destination was recorded as Avoca (Murray County) Minnesota. His relatives, Halle and Karen Rosendal, appear in the 1900 US Census in Cass County. I have found brief references to Christian the 1897 and 1898 Minneapolis City Directories, and a reference to a land transaction in his name dated 2 May 1905 regarding 80 acres located in the 5th Meridian, Township 138 N, Range 30 W, Section 26. I do not know if he was buying or selling this land but would appreciate help finding just where this parcel of land is located. Christian Halbostad (last name may be spelled as Holbostad, Helbasted, Helabostad, etc.) married a cousin Levina Halbostad, most likely in MN between 1881 and 1889, and we believe they had at least three children; Julia, Ellen and Kenneth. Family stories state that Levina Halbostad died during childbirth about 1895 and that after he remarried, Christian Halbostad died in 1906 - I am hoping that some kind soul will be able to tell me where I may find records of their marriage, deaths and the births of their children. Any assistance is sincerely appreciated. Betty Ann

    1. The truth about ink jet longevity...
    2. Sally J. Jacobs
    3. Dear Family Historians, Hi! My name is Sally, and I'm a Wisconsin-based archivist. I've been researching the question of ink-jet longevity for the October issue of my free montly e-zine "Ask the Archivist." The most interesting thing I learned is that brand *does* matter. The paper, ink, and equipment are all designed to work together. So if you've got an BrandX printer you need to buy BrandX paper and BrandX ink, too -- if you want them to last for 100 years (as some manufacturers claim). I had some not-so-great experiences with printing my own photos before I started researching ink jet longevity. Now, I've decided to ditch my ink jet altogether. Instead, I upload digital photos to my trusted local photo shop. The October issue of "Ask the Archivist" comes out next week. Subscribing is super-easy on our website: http://www.jacobsarchival.com Got questions for the archivist?.... Email me anytime! 3. According to GOOGLE, Chicago and Minnesota were the prime areas Swedes settled in in the 1880s to 1920s. I am seeking an AUGUSTA SYLVIA LARSON, born 1885, Goteborg, Sweden, immigrated before 1903, and married an ARTHUR CHARLES BINGHAM, perhaps in Minnesota or Chicago. Where married not known, but, do know that the couple settled in Vermont, and had at least 3 children. Margaret,(Daisy) 1905, Roland, 1907, and 1 other... The couple separated about 1912 in St Albans Vermont, and presumably divorced. From there, I believe that she moved to Chicago, and perhaps remarried. Any information on her would be appreciated greatly... ------------------ Dick Carter rcar37@prodigy.net

Are Minnesota records public for this time frame? Any feedback/ direction/information would be appreciated. Jon Minnesota did not require records to be kept prior to 1907. However, towns and counties did normally keep such records. Some people did not report the events, or they could report them at a town or county other than where they resided. Which basically means, you have to check areas other than the seemingly obvious town or county if you can not locate them in the logical place. Anoka county did maintain records and they have books of records that you used to be able to request and review, I do not know if that is still the case, I have not done so for many years. You might want to check the Anoka county website, or Cyndi's List - _www.cyndislist.com_ (http://www.cyndislist.com) and see if you can determine how you can obtain those records from Anoka County - I do not know if they have a look-up service. jo Hogle

    3. Hi Jon, Hopefully some other folks got to your message faster and gave you some MN research tips. But, just in case, here's a few good sites: http://www.mnhs.org/genealogy/index.htm MN Death Certificates Index - Currently, this database indexes the death cards from 1905 to 1907 and the death certificates from 1908 to 1996. MN Birth Certificates Index - This Index currently covers the years 1900-1911. MN NEWSPAPER COLLECTION - Dates range from 1849 to the present day. There's a few "Summit" locations in MN and I'm not sure which one it is that you need: Summit Lake Twp. -- Nobles Co. Summit Twp. -- Beltrami Co. Summit Twp. -- Steele Co. The map at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mngenweb/ provides links to websites for all the counties in MN Hope that helps a bit. 1. Anderson Brothers Mortuary
    2. Jeanine, Most mortuaries maintain the records, but I was told that they really are not required to do so. If a funeral home is bought by someone else, they usually maintain the records as well, but I have heard of some that have not. Anderson Brothers became Sundseth - Anderson. And that funeral home now belongs to Washburn - McReavy. Washburn - McReavy is the largest mortuary "company" in Minneapolis. They are very good about maintaining records, but the previous owners may not have been. I would suggest you contact them and inquire if the records from Anderson Brothers and Sundseth-Anderson are still on file. Also - Lakewood Cemetery maintains records that often include more than just the basics. So if Washburn - McReavy does not have them, you may get a bit of information from Lakewood.
