Death records could be held even at the township level as well as county and then at the state level. I've also seen proof of death in Wills or in Probate files when I couldn't find it in "death records". Also in church held records where they attended. There are many ways. Obits are another source. So you have to be a detective and use every resource available. As to your second question, you never know when you are going to get informant and burial questions answered. in the kate 1800's and early 1900's are online in Michigan and have the informant and burial listed.
