FamilySearch.org has a new thing for searching for records. Go to Family Search and on the first page below what's new is 'See new Prototype for searching millions of New Records. It is fantastic. I have found all kinds of of birth, marriage, etc. records. They are copies of the orginal record pages. The one bad thing is that a lot of the spelling on these records was really bad so sometimes you have to be very inventive on the spelling. Barb

There were a number of members of this family who simplified the spelling of Coggeshall, this was obviously one such. I am about as distant to this family as I can be to almost any Coggeshall in America. Our common ancestor is President John Coggeshall of Rhode Island. James Henry would be a 6th cousin to the comparable person in my genealogy line = Peter Collin Coggeshall II, my Great Grandfather. This means that James and I are 6th cousins, 3 generations removed. I am certain there are others on this site who have a closer relationship than that to James. To help find them, I will list James' line of descent from President John: 1 President John Coggeshall (baptized at Halstead, England 12-9-1601 to Newport, RI 11-27-1647) 2 Joshua Coggeshall (about 1626 in Essex England to 5-1-1688) {Back in the 1970s there were more descendents as members of the Coggeshall Historical Association from Joshua than from any of President John's other 6 adult children.} 3 John Coggeshall (Dec 1659 to 5-1-1727) 4 Benjamin Coggeshall (b Portsmouth RI, date unknown {his previous brother Caleb born about 1709}; Benjamin went to Stratford, Conn about 1733 and died there, date unknown) 5 Dunlap Coggeshall (6-12-1747 to 12-28-1808) 6 Rev. Archibald Coggeshall (5-11-1790 to 8-31-1850) 7 Bela Coggeshall (2-16-1816 to 10-21-1881) 8 James Henry Coggeshall (5-27-1837 to not listed in book) I hope this helps find a much closer relation. It covers 2/3 of a page. I will copy most of this posting: "James Henry Coggeshall of Muskegon, Mich., was born Groveland, Mich., May 27, 1837; married Salem, Mich., Aug 10, 1862, Electra Force, daughter of Nelson and Sarah Force of Canada. She was born Paris, Ill., Aug 8, 1837. {The tie of this James back to President John is provided.} Mr Coggeshall was graduated from the Univ of Michigan in 1862, received the degree of AM in 1867, and from the same Institution he received his BS and MS. He was for a while a teacher and was later engaged in book publishing at Muskegon, Mich. He was secretary of the Lowell Moore Lodge, No 182, A.F. and A.M. and a mamber of the Damascus Chapter, R.A.M., Muskegon Council, master of East Tawas Lodge, F.A. and A.M., and master of Tawas City Lodge, A.F. and A.M. Mrs Coggeshall was several times Recorder in the Mizpah Chapter No 88, O.E.S. Children: - William Ellsworth, b Ann Arbor, Mich, 8-10-1863; d Muskegon, Mich, 10-13-1889. - Jennie May, b Lexington, Mich, 5-1-1865; d 4-18-1871. - George Theopholis, b Tawas City, Mich, 6-14-1869; d Tawas City 3-12-1871. - Rose Adelle, b Tawas City, 8-26-1873. Single. Miss Coggeshall was a member of the Mizpah Chapter of the O.E.S. in which she served several terms as Ruth and Assistant Conductress. - Bela Nelson Laverne, b Detroit, Mich., 11-16-1877. Mr Coggeshall was employed as a clerk in the post office. He was a sergeant in the military company and was with the "Rough Riders" at the taking of San Juan Hill at Santiago de Cuba. He is a member of the Lowell Moore Lodge, No. 182F. Single. {Because of the date this book was published, the use of the verb "is" above and no death dates provided for them, it appears that both Rose and Bela were living when this book was published. There is no indication that this Coggeshall family changed their name spelling to Cogshall -- although that is the way I pronounce my last name = Kog shl.} Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The 1880 census lists lists Bell D. Covell, age 3, as living with her parents D.W. (David Wilmot) and Emma E. Covell in Whitehall, MI. David and Emma divorced in 1883 and the divorce decree states there were no children born from this union. A Bell Covell may have been living in Muskegon, MI on Pine St. in 1890 but I have no other information that this is factual. She does not appear under this name in any later census records I have reviewed. Might anyone have ever heard of Bell or what may have happened to her? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. -- Peace Al Covell
