I found the death certificate of George W. McElfish on Seeking Michigan. He died on October 4, 1897 in Muskegon County. At the time of his death, the family was living on Florence Ave., which I believe is now Isabella, between Wood and Getty streets. The cemetery that is listed as his burial place looks like "Black Creek Cemetery". However, this could be Muskegon County Cemetery. I cannot tell because of the writing. Evans. Born around 1844 in Canada as Mary Bain, she married Ignatius G. Evans around 1874. Mary Evans appears on the 1900 census in Whitehall, 1910 in Blue Lake, and 1920 in Whitehall living with her daughter, Anna Reed. Ignatius died in 1914 and is believed to be buried in Oakhurst Cemetery in Whitehall. There is a "Mrs. Evans" also buried there which might be her. Mary Evans had at least two brothers who immigrated from Canada to the US who lived in Emmet County. They are Benjamin Bain who died in 1921 and Joseph G. Bain who died in 1925. I am seeking more information about her to trace her family in Canada. Does anyone know where obituaries from the 1920s can be found for Muskegon County Michigan? Since then I've moved and haven't had much time for my genealogy work. Due to a new post I got back in today and saw this post of yours. It finally ties together my family (my Great Grandfather Pieter Vanderlaan, father Jan Edzes), with Simon/Siemon, Pieter's younger brother. Pieter was born 1848, died before 1906. Then at least two of his sons came to the U.S. including my grandfather Harry Vanderlaan. It appears that Siemon took his own route to the U.S. but both Siemon's family and Pieter's family ended up near Muskegon, Michigan. Thanks for making this tie for me!
