    3. Found these graves in Muskegon. Maybe Mrs. George Mclennan was the wife. Suggest death certificate, which might say where he is buried. Jenni MCLENNAN Angeline J. Restlawn MCLENNAN Arthur A. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WGB.2ACI/1577.1.2 Message Board Post: "Whoever did the transcribing of all the people buried in graves around Muskegon County sure messed up." As someone who has done a minimal amount of transcriptions, I can tell you that it's not always easy. Handwriting and old headstones are two of the hardest things to read. I'm not saying that the group of people or organization responsible for indexing and transcribing headstones in various parts of Muskegon Co. did a stellar job, but it was done several years ago (I know one group did it back in the 1970s) and new info. has come to light since then. (Also headstones have deteriorated or broken since that time.) Then there are always cases where people were buried in a particular cemetery but couldn't afford a headstone, or one was there once upon a time but is no longer. And other individuals were buried in the same grave as another family member but not noted in the records or on the stone. >From what I have observed around the country, there have been oversights and mistakes made almost everywhere in transcribing headstones and anything else. Still we should be thankful for the volunteers who took the time to do this for their fellow researchers. We could have nothing at all if it weren't for them. As far as spelling is concerned, unfortunately the dead have no control over errors made on gravestones. Dates are a prime example of this. However, anyone who has been researching their family history for any length of time knows that our ancestors weren't as particular about spelling as we are today. And there's the real possibility that if a mistake was made on the stone they went ahead and used it because they couldn't afford to have another one made.

I have most of the info on my great grandfather Solomon here in the US, but I am trying to find something that shows he is the son of Jean-Baptiste Lamoureux and Louise Lazur(e). If I can make that connection I will have him traced back to France in 1639. I have a big void in his life. I can't find him being born. The first time I pick him up is when he married Elise Patenaude (various spellings) in Laprairie, QC on October 2, 1899. The next time I pick him up is in Muskegon as Solomon Lamoreaux, a widower, in the 1900 census. I went to the Archives but can't find immigration papers on him either. Oh well, if genealogy was easy, it wouldn't be so much fun. Patt

One machine showed me several Lamourex & different spellings of the name. You have to remember many did not speak English, only French & had little schooling & therefore went by the way Lamouroux sounded & therefore different spellings. I found my mom's family was Lamirande. But she thought for years it was Lemmeron. Her grampa thought it was Lamouroux. So, all the relatives got scattered from East Canada to the Upper Peninsula. Do you have any Reid or Gareau in your family tree? I do. from denise

It is like they never existed. Whoever did the transcribing of all the people buried in graves around Muskegon County sure messed up. This was in the early 1900's. The graves we were looking for were in Montague & the names were Caroline & William Aley. Also, looking for their son's wife's family.. Miller family graves. No records. We KNOW they are there. Once we went to my dad's sister's grave & found out that they mispelled her name. Also, I asked about the graves of people that lived in the house I am in. No record, yet I went looking around & found the dead man's grave & went back & told the lady where he was. Good luck, as records are all messed up. From denise.... [email protected]

    2. lynda.gamil
    3. Hi, I am new to list, my name is Lynda and I am trying to trace my Grandfathers second wife's family. I have found HELENE MARR CAINE's grandfather on the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1860 ALFRED A. CAINE is a Justice of the Peace at White River, Muskegon. In 1870 he is at WHITEHALL, MUSKEGON ref M593 roll 692 page 385. I find it impossible to read the names of his wife and his children. Is it possible someone could take a look at the original of the 1870 census and let me know the first names, please. Also are there any records for Justices of the Peace and is anyone researching the name CAINE in Muskegon. many thanks Lynda. England.
