    1. A distant cousin
    2. Brett I hope you don't mind me joining in on your correspondence with your cousin at [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) , but I am another far more distant cousin. My father, Donald Reid is the only son of Florence Hanley, daughter of Sharland Hanley, brother of Sarah. After leaving Dublin he worked for William Heap selling the new flush systems. He had studied classical Greek, so as he had a base for learning modern Greek he specialised in selling to Greek immigrants. In June 2003 I contacted Lesley Whiteside, the Archivist ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) ) at The Kings Hospital (Bluecoats School) where John Hanl(e)y had worked. She has written a book which contains some references to him, which I tried to order but it hasn't arrived yet. I must will chase that up. If you do take any photos of Hanley historic haunts, please include me on the circulation too. I live in France, Europe, so it is a bit too far to do it myself! Jenny

I went by the Slayton house and shot a couple pictures. I tried to find block c-lot 13 but had no luck. I did find the factory building at Fulton and Hopkins. It is a electric motor factory now. The Tribune has the factory opening there in 1907 though, not 1894. I didn't get to Muskegon until after 6, so the museum was closed. I did see a toilet tank in the Tri-Cities Museum. I found where 42 Terrace used to be. It is currently just a series of slabs. Looks like a large corporate park is going to be built on that spot. I completely forgot to look up William's house in Muskegon. I will have to catch it on my next visit. It turns out, my mother has been corresponding with Ed Hanley until about a year ago. He lives in Muskegon and has children there too. I will find out the exact relation between Ed and Sarah Hanley. I tried to hook up with the Hanleys yesterday, but only got voicemail. I am sure they will also have a picture of Sarah. Can you outline the Lionel Heap family down to today? I can do the same for Cecil Heap for you. Where are you located? A cousin of yours, Jeff Crow is getting married next weekend in San Diego. Jeff is the son of Doug Crow, son of Lilian Heap Crow, daughter of Cecil Heap.

Here's some Heap family locations: 1) William & Sarah (Hanley) Heap's residence was at 170 Peck Street in Muskegon. 2) The Heap Co. factory was at 43 to 49 Terrace Street in Muskegon from 1886 to 1894. Then from 1894 to 1932 it was in Grand Haven, MI at Fulton St & N. Hopkins. It closed in 1932, but the building still stands. 3) Sarah Hanley Heap & her mother, Emma Hall, are buried in Block C-Lot 13 at Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven. 4) There are two museums that have Heap Co. information. One is the Tri-Cities Historical Museum at 1 N. Harbor Drive in Grand Haven. The second place is the Muskegon County Museum at 430 W. Clay Ave. in Muskegon. 5) William & Sarah Heap's son, Lionel (my great-grandfather), lived at 536 Slayton, Grand Haven. The house is still there.

She lived in Newaygo Co for a good portion of her adult life but returned to NY where she was born when her husband died in 1907. She moved back to MI in 1937 to live with her daughter Nellie Hosmer who died in Ravenna (and I've been told Sarah is buried in Ravenna in a church cemetery). I'm guessing the obit ran in Newaygo but since she probably died in Ravenna I thought I'd try this board too. I would greatly appreciate anyone getting this for me. I will gladly do lookups in the Kent Co area in return. Thank you.

    1. How do I find newspapers?
    2. Hi All: I Dutch friend wants to trace a few people in Oskaloosa, IA. Since these people arrived in Iowa some 100 years ago, they are presumably passed on. Is anyone aware of how I could find out which newspapers cover this area? -- Actually, it would be nice to know how one can correlate newspapers and geographic territory in general. [My wife spent a lot of time trying to find all newspapers in the Twin Cities when she searched for a recent obit.] Thanks! Ed Spaans
