Hi Betty Thanks for your reply and offer. It's tough researching in the South from Oregon! Here is my info on Matthew and his family that I got from my grandparents Staley and Oralie who did extensive research in many visits to family and record sites in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina. I have posted this previously on the Mims Family Forum at Geneology.com and believe that repetition at respectful intervals may spur the uncovering of further info from unexpected sources. John Carr Mims b. 2-1-1871/MS Ellis B. Mims by Staley Wood Mims and Oralie Byrne Mims {Edited by Staley Wood Mims, III} Ellis B. Mims was the second child of Matthew and Czarina E. Robinson Mims born in Twiggs Co. Georgia +/- 1837. He had two brothers and four sisters of full blood relationship and there were a large number of half brothers and sisters. At this writting {Editor's Note - 1970}, the earliest record is a tax digest of Twiggs County 1833 showing Matthew Mims with one poll and other very small tax items. The 1840 Census of Twiggs County (page 379, line 12) shows Matthew Mims, wife and three sons, all of ages to agree withother evidences of record. This with other very strong correlative data, leads to the nearly indisputable indication that Ellis was born in Twiggs County, Georgia. The same applies to his brothers, Peter G. Thompson Mims, born 1835, and John R. Mims, born 1839. A record of Ellis' father, Matthew, for a small tax is found on the Lowndes County, Mississippi tax roll in 1841. Ellis' family was at Artesia, Mississippi which was a railway crossing point for the M&O Railway and another railway (E-W) Line, from 1841 through 1848or 1850 as his sisters, Mary Isabell born 1841, Eliza Y. born 1843, Martha Shaver born 1845, and Zerina Eunice born 1848 are shown in later census records as native to the state of Mississippi. Ellis' mother Czarina died +/- 1848 probably when Zerina Eunice was born or soon thereafter, which meant that Ellis was about 11 years old. His father Matthew married Susan Dearing Carr on February 26, 1849 and those who knew her say that she raised Czarina's and her own children in an amazing and wonderful environment of equal love and affection and no favoritism. In 1851, his father Matthew was appointed guardian for Ellis, his brothers and sisters for administration of an estate left to these children by Mary Robinson, their grandmother and mother of Czarina Robinson Mims. His portion was paid on Aprol 2, 1858. Ellis was in the C.S.A. and was wounded according to the recollection of his son, Joel Matthew {Ed. Note - Mims, Staley's father and my great grandfather} but searches in three or four southern state libraries and archives have not developed his Confederate States Service Record. After the war and during reconstruction, Ellis was on a lake or a river on a raft with a black man. They engaged in a tussel and the black man fell into the water and Ellis thought he had drowned. To escape the harsh and unreasoning judgement of the provisional authorities, Ellis left hurriedly, changed his first name and remained away from his family, out of communication and incognito. He used the name Edward B. Mims for this purpose. The location of the event and time were not known by Joel Matthew but were told of it at a time when his clarity of mind and accuracy of recollection were good, sound and vivid. It was only in the last year of his life that Ellis learned that the man had not drowned and that his flight from carpetbagger justice was needless. His new location had been in Northeastern Louisiana and this probably happened about 1866 or 7 for he met and married Ann Garriot Olivia Staley Archibald who was the widow of a Mr. {Ed. Note - A family tree prepared separately shows his first name as Frank} Archibald who had been killed in the Civil War. She had one son Frank Archibaldfrom this first marriage. To this couple {Ellis and Ann} were born Edward Wellington Mims {born} on April 15, 1869 and Joel Matthew Mims {born} on March 8, 1871. There is some question as to whether this took place in Carroll or Morehouse Parrish {Louisiana}. His passing was probably about 1881 at age 56. His body was placed in a small cemetary near a little schoolhouse on th Bonne Idee Bayou in Morehouse Parrish close to the Daniels' and the Lilly's farms. I am sorry I don't know about Col. Matthew Mims b. 1813. But I can tell you the early settlers in KY which started the Mimms, Mims name in KY. 1. Shadrach Mimms arrived in Logan Co. KY as of 1811. 2. Robert Mimms, s/o Shadrach, s/o David, arrived in Logan Co., KY as of 1813. (this is my line). 3. Linah Mimms arrived in Christian Co, KY as of 1817. 4. Gideon Mimms arrived in Christian and Todd Counties about 1817. #1 and #4 above are brothers. I would love to make a note about the father and grandfather of each of these men above. Does anyone have that information to share? Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin
If you believe that the WOOD name in your family line is in honor of some WOODSON ancestry, tied back to Dr. John Woodson, then perhaps it would be through: Shadrach Mimms born about 1724-29 maybe Edgefield SC or Virginia? Died: 11-17-1777 Goochland Co VA. he married Elizabeth Woodson, a descendant of Dr. John Woodson. Only trouble with this reasoning is he appears to have only had one son, Robert Mimms who married Lucy Poor. The rest of his kids were girls. Robert Mimms was having children in the 1813 time frame, but I don't see a Matthew recorded. Robert's sons were: William, Drury, David and John. It looks like a tough case to crack, but don't give up, somewhere there must be a clue. Since he is a military man that would be were I would look first, at military records. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin
