I agree - this is an abuse of governmental power. I purpose of eminent domain is to take property for the good of the community not as a way to raise money. I think the community would be better served if the newspaper museum was given more attention by funding of a grant. Afterall, The Edgefield Advertiser is the oldest newspaper in the State of South Carolina owned continuously by the same family. Why not preserve the history that was reported and the equipment used to produce the records of time? If the local politicians want to bring in additional funds for the community why not use the building for the purpose of it's historical significance and help fund the needed improvements as the building was erected in the 1800's and is in need of repairs due to age? This building is but one in a series of connected buildings in the town square and one can only imagine the entire series of buildings would need repairs. Why would the local government single out a particular owner in the series? Sounds like abuse of power to me. I am sure there is vacant property nearby downtown which could be developed and provide the space needed for the proposed theater which would serve the same purpose - generate income to the town of Edgefield.
