I've been doing a lot of work on Linah Mims, who appeared in Greenbrier Co. VA (now WV) by 1800 and moved to Christian Co. KY about 1818. It would appear he descended from the Mims of Goochland, but how? What I know of him is: - Probably born 1770-1775, based on census data - Appears on Greenbrier Co. tax list in 1880 - Married Rebecca Davis of Greenbrier by Feb 1803 - Elected to VA House of Delegates 1806-1811 - Member of VA Council of State 1811-1818, a full time job in Richmond - Moved to Christian Co. KY about 1818, and apparently was a successful famer - Appointed agent to Northwest Indians 1832, apparently leaving his three youngest daughters with his oldest son, John Harrison Mims, in Caldwell Co. - Returned to Caldwell by 1838 - Died, probably in Caldwell, 1847-1850 But I've found no clue as to his parentage. What drove him to move to the mountains of Greenbrier, with no apparent relatives in the area? Then, he became President of the Council of State, and thus Lt. Gov. in 1814, and a leading figure in VA politics through the "War of 1812." So why did he suddenly lose interest, missing most meetings after Jul 1817, and finally resign his post in Oct 1818, moving to Christian Co.? I've seen some suggestions he had brothers already in KY. Does anyone have any evidence they were actually brothers? Or any suggestions about where to start looking for the family he left to move to Greenbrier? Terry Reigel
