    3. Mims Gang: While we are on the subject of Sam Mimses book "Leaves From the Mims Family Tree" I wanted to write a note regarding the David Mimses of NC that he refers to in the book. Some years ago Janet Sims from the list and I were working on the Chatham Co. line of Mimses and were able to shed some light on a few mistakes that Sam made. In the book he refers to a David Mims that he calls "David the Regulator" Some of what he writes is accurate, but he apparently combined the actions (and records) of three different Davids (living at the same time) and rolled them into one: David Mims of Chatham Co. - married Elizabeth Cullen (son of Joseph and Susannah) David Mims on the border of Johnson/Wake Co. - married Judy/Judith (perhaps son of Lionel and Anne) David Mims of Bladen/Anson Co. area (son of Thomas Mims III and Grace Britton) The "Regulator" David was the fellow that lived on Middle Creek on the Wake/Johnson county border. He ran a mill and a colonial tavern or "ordinary" there. Janet Sims extensively researched this fellow at the NC Archives, and I have read everything I can get my hands on about him. Although I believe that he was a sympathizer to the Regulator cause, and it is apparent that some of the leaders of the Regulator movement in NC stayed at his "ordinary" (read the Regulator Papers published by NC Archives) I have seen no evidence to confirm that he was a Regulator "leader" to the extent that Sam suggests. Also, his tavern is listed in the legal description of the creation of Wake County. The county line goes (went) right through were his place was on Middle Creek (near present-day Angier NC). Apparently, he was unable to pay some debts after the war and seems to drop out of sight after this time period. The David Mims of Chatham county was a sergeant in the Chatham Co. militia and served in the Revolution. We believe that Regulator David was his uncle and indeed Chatham David lived on Middle Creek near Regulator David with his parents (Joseph and Susannah) before they moved to the Orange Co./Chatham Co. area (Chatham was created from Orange). This David got land grants and bought land in the southeastern portion of Chatham Co. along White Oak Creek (now under Harris Lake). The David of the Bladen/Anson area I know less about, however some members of this family signed a Regulator petition before the war. I mention him because, as I recall, Sam was under the impression that his "combined David" moved about the state of NC, when in actuality he was looking at 3 different fellows. This David descends from the Thomas Mims Jr. line as opposed to the Lionel Mims line (we think that the above Joseph was a son of Lionel although there is no conclusive paper trail as of yet). Hope this makes sense. I am working from memory here, so I have intentionally left out any details and dates that I would not specifically remember. Also, if you do a search of this List I have written on this subject before in much greater detail in the past. -Steve Mims in Idaho
