    3. Here is the inscription on the historic marker on the Upson County courthouse square in Thomaston: Upson County was created by Acts of the Legislature December 15th and 20th, 1824. It's named for Stephen Upson, a well known lawyer of Lexington, Georgia. Lt. General John B. Gordon, famed Confederate leader called "the second to Robert E. Lee" was born in Upson County at the settlement of Black Ankle near the Flint (or Thronateeska) River. So that sort of dispells the place of the marriage in 1796 of David Spivy Mims and Elizabeth (Betsey) Broome, doesn't it? He had a sister Betsey who married Betsey Broome's brother in Lincoln County, another of the many counties formed from Washington County which reached all the way from the east Georgia mountains to the southeast coast just north of Brunswick.
