I am searching for information regarding Agnes Miims who married Thomas Riddle 11 Oct 1755 in Goochland Co, VA. I am fairly certain that they are the parents of Thomas Riddle who married Rebecca Goolsby 16 Aug 1802 in Oglethorpe Co, GA. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated! In reference to "Elizabeth Mims, daughter of Thomas and Anne Mims, born 29th March and baptised 11th of May 1679," followed by "Elizabeth Mims, daughter of Thomas and Anne Mims, departed this life 19th October and was buried 20th ditto 1678," and Sam's comment "Obviously the child could not have been buried five months before she was born," Kate notes "They could have been two different children, the second named in memory of her dead sister." 2. In reference to the comment that Drury-4-a married Lydia Jones and they moved, first to North Carolina, then on to Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, Kate says: I think Lydia was from NC and he married her there. 3.In reference to the will of THOMAS-4-f, Sam says the will discloses that on January 10, 1809, three of his daughters were widows, then names their husbands, and says two of them were named as executors in the will. Kate asked how he could name the husbands of widows as executors. (Had they remarried and those were the new husbands? I haven't seen the will, so I don't know.) Janet correctly points out that there is very little documentation in the paper. He says "countless hours were spent in the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Bureau of Land Management in the Department of Interior, and other departments and agencies at our Nation's capital, digging into original sources." But he refers to few of those documents specifically. Further, he says he is not a genealogist, leaving room to wonder about his experience in interpreting such records. Hence my original question as to thoughts on the accuracy of both his "facts" and his conclusions. Terry Reigel

Terry, The questions you are asking are ones which are important to me also. I will now share with you, what I have found so far. I shall hope that other researchers will jump into this discussion, and we will all move forward in our joint understanding. First of all, I am the grandaughter of Eddie Bernard Mimms, of Russellville, KY, s/o Gideon Mimms of Russellville, KY, s/o Drury Shadrach Woodson Mimms of Russellville, KY, s/o Robert Mimms who arrived at Russellville, Logan Co., KY in 1813. Robert Mimms is the s/o Shadrach Mimms, s/o David Mimms and Agnes Weldy. Shadrach Mimms and wife Elizabeth Woodson were of the Goochland Co., VA Mimms/Mims group. I wanted to find the COMMON Roots of the early Mimms families in Kentucky. Here is a list I developed: #1. Robert Mimms, s/o Shadrack Mimms, s/o David Mimms and Agnes Weldy. Robert Mimms arrived in Logan Co., KY as of 1813, at Russellville, Ky. (My family group) #2. Linah Mims, s/o ??, s/o ?? He arrived in Christian Co as of 1817. #3. Shadrach Mims, s/o ??, s/?? He arrived in Logan Co., KY as of 1811. #4. Gideon Mims, s/o ??, s/?? He arrived Christian/Todd Co KY. as of 1817. So here we see 4 separate men, who all are Mimms/Mims, who all arrive in KY at 1811 to 1817, and all settle close to each other. Are they brothers? Cousins? Second Cousins? I have noted that Shadrach Mims and Gideon Mims, as listed #3 and #4 above, were BROTHERS. That info came to me from another researcher, and I have not personally confirmed this. Gideon and Shadrach Mims, both being sons of David Mims and Martha Diuguid Not so long ago, on this mailing list, a kind fellow Mims researcher, provided me with a 1789 Goochland Tax Roll list. Listed there was: 1. Gideon Mims 2. Robert Mims 3. Linah Mims 4. Robert Mims, Jr. 5. Estate of David Mims, deceased. 5. Elizabeth Mims My Shadrach Mims had died 11-17-1777, so obviously he is not listed in 1789. From this listing of 1789 Tax Roll listed above, another researcher has identified each name as such: #1. Gideon, s/o David and Agnes #2. Robert, s/o John and Sarah #3. Robert, the younger, s/o Sharach and Elizabeth #4. Estate of David Mims deceased as of 1781. #5. Elizabeth Mims, widow of Shadrach Mims who died 1777. BUT THIS LEAVES LINAH MIMS AS A BIG QUESTION MARK?? Who does he belong to? I have NEVER researched Linah Mims, the political man. He sounds very interesting, and I surely hope there is a current researcher of him who will share information here about him. Best regards, and hoping to learn more. Hi John, I have a printed copy sent to me by another Mims researcher but would like to compare it to what you have. If you don't mind, please send me a copy. Jeannine Jackson, descended from Joseph, Martin, David Spivey, Jefferson Augustus, and William Floyd P. S. Regarding Cobbs, one of David Spivey Mims' daughters married Ammon Cobb in Warren County, GA.. Does anyone here know about these Cobbs? I believe some of them moved to Gordon County, GA with Jefferson and Susan Marian Fuller Mims in the 1850's or earlier. Jefferson and Susan named their oldest son Ammon Judson and I believe he was named after Ammon Cobb. Also, would like to know where the Judson came from. This son was killed in the War Between the States. BTW, I also have an application to DAR awaiting approval. Mine is on Martin Mims and since no other person has used him to apply - this will be a "new" ancestor. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JVanZandt@aol.com> To: <MIMS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 10, 2004 1:15 PM Subject: [MIMS,MIMMS,MIMBS] Found Mims Leaves - Word Doc > Hello Group: > > For a copy of "Mims Leaves" please email me directly. > > This appears to be a complete transcribed copy including intro., five > generations and summary. Hello Group: For a copy of "Mims Leaves" please email me directly. This appears to be a complete transcribed copy including intro., five generations and summary. It is a word document and this version prints out as 30 pages. If it's not a complete copy as compared with other library versions, please let me know. Going to run errands for awhile and can begin emailing these out by this evening (Saturday). Also, will soon be sharing multiple links found on the internet regarding Edgefield and Mims descendants. I too would like a copy of this paper. -----Original Message----- From: Joe Street [mailto:pappaj46@swbell.net] Sent: Saturday, January 10, 2004 10:48 AM To: MIMS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MIMS,MIMMS,MIMBS] Leaves from the Mims Family Tree How can I get a copy of this paper? If anyone knows > the answer, please post it here to the entire list. I've sent to a copy of the transcription I have to you directly, and would be happy to do the same to anyone interested. I received it in Mar 2000 from my wife's cousin, Deborah Manley, who was at that time actively studying her Cobb/Mims ancestry. She said at the time that someone on the Mims list sent it to her some time before, but she could not recall who. She also said she had seen references to it on the list from time to time. A search on "Leaves" in the 1996 archives of the list shows a number of messages about it. I find that Kate Shue provided copies to interested persons in Jul 1996. She is the transcriber, and there are a couple of notes from "Kate" in the copy I have. In another post in Jul 1996 I find a note from Marilyn H. Symonds in which she says: ---- It is a photocopy of a typescript which I found in family files in Clayton Genealogical Library, Houston, Texas, apparently completed circa March 1961. Mims, now deceased, stated in "Leaves": "Ten years of research for the State of Louisiana, followed by four years in Washington, gave me opportunity to pursue the study [of Samuel Mims and Fort Mims]. Countless hours were spent in the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Bureau of Land Management in the Department of Interior, and other departments and agencies at our Nation's capital, digging into orginial sources for facts about Samuel Mims and the Red Stick War." ---- And in Aug 1996, Kate Shue says: --- It's fascinating material, full of history of the family. At least one of the genealogical "facts" is wrong, but whose research is without mistakes? And it does have a lot of correct information and clues. --- I do not find any other commentary on the accuracy of the data. As Lillian says, any current thought would be appreciated. Thanks to Ann for those possible locations for this source - Libraries at Birmingham and Univ. of Virginia. I'll be checking three old (hard drives ) on computer here at the house and viewing CD-Roms backups to see if I have the complete transcription. It was emailed (attachment) to me in early 2001. Hello, Mims cousins, I believe that I found a copy at the Birmingham [AL] Public Library or the Library of VA. Unfortunately, I didn't copy all of the pages. I have 1-25, 31-33, 43-44. Overall, I think Sam Mims did a good job. We all make mistakes and there are some in the book, but I found it a good guide. Ann Blomquist Orlando, FL
Has anybody submitted DAR papers on Shadrack Mims? I have just submitted my DAR papers for Joseph Cobb of Georgia, but I also am descended from Shadrack Mims through Thomas Birch Mims of Santa Rosa County, Florida and would like to submit that one as a supplemental. My great-grandmother was his granddaughter, Florida Mims. According to my GEDCOM Drury Mims would be my 1st cousin 8 times removed. According to my records Drury had a brother also named Shadrack, but my ancestor was the son of Thomas Valentine Mims. I'm not sure if this one is the same Shadrack MIms listed in the DAR Registry. Below is a copy of their repsonse to my inquiry. A search of our Patriot Index provided the information found below. MIMS, Shadrach Birth: Before (ante) 1765 Service: GA Rank: Sol, Patriotic Service Death: GA 23 Nov 1807 Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No Spouse: (1) Elizabeth X Vanessa On Jan 10, 2004, at 10:56 AM, JVanZandt@aol.com wrote: Hi! I am glad to hear that there is aa copy of the info on Leaves From the Mims Family Tree at Clayton Library, here in Houston. I was sent a copy of this several years ago from a Mims that lived in the Woodlands area. At that time, I was told that the only copy was in a library in Florida. Since I will have a couple of days off soon, I hope to go to the Clayton Library. I have not been since they started construction for the rail. I am interested in any info on the Mims and Cobb family. I know that my great grandfather, John Mims, his brothers Linah and Byron, along with the Cobb children, were living with the Tylers in the 1850 census. Jan Davis
