    1. Mims & Addison or Harrison?
    2. Terry Reigel
    3. I'm looking for connections for Linah Mims, born about 1770-1775, who appears in Greenbrier Co. VA in 1800, gets elected to the Virginia Assembly in 1806, then to the Council of State in 1811, then suddenly in 1818 chucks it all and moved to central Kentucky. I'd suppose he was connected to he Virginia Mims, who largely moved to the Carolinas before heading westward, but have found no trace of that. I'm wondering if there is a clue in the names of his children. His sons, in order best I can tell, were: Addison John Harrison Davis N. Rufus K. The mother's father was John Davis, which would explain those two names. But where did Addison, Harrison, and Rufus come from? A search on Rootsweb WorldConnect shows Edward Jones Mims and Emeline Sarah Addison were having children in SC in the 1840-1850s period. Likewise Benjamin Tarlton Mims and Susan Ann Addison, in the same period in SC. And David Mims and Sophia Moles Addison, in AL with children in 1830s. They are all too late to be Linah's parents. Anyone know of Mims connections to these names early enough to be in Linah's ancestry? Or any other ideas? Terry Reigel

I purpose of eminent domain is to take property for the good of the community not as a way to raise money. I think the community would be better served if the newspaper museum was given more attention by funding of a grant. Afterall, The Edgefield Advertiser is the oldest newspaper in the State of South Carolina owned continuously by the same family. Why not preserve the history that was reported and the equipment used to produce the records of time? If the local politicians want to bring in additional funds for the community why not use the building for the purpose of it's historical significance and help fund the needed improvements as the building was erected in the 1800's and is in need of repairs due to age? This building is but one in a series of connected buildings in the town square and one can only imagine the entire series of buildings would need repairs. Why would the local government single out a particular owner in the series? Sounds like abuse of power to me. I am sure there is vacant property nearby downtown which could be developed and provide the space needed for the proposed theater which would serve the same purpose - generate income to the town of Edgefield. I have visited the museum and have added the pictures I took to my website for those who would like to see some of the museum. The pictures are on my PHOTOS page. 2. John, if it's already listed on the National Register of Historic Places, you have a sword. The owners need to get in touch with either the nearest office of the National Park Service or the National Trust for Historic Preservation. You have to jump through so many hoops to destroy a building that's on the Register that most people don't even bother to try.

    1. Re: [MIMS,MIMMS,MIMBS] Benjamin Mims married to Judith Woodson
    2. Deb, I don't think there is any documentation that the Judith who married Benjamin Mims was a Woodson. The Valentine papers mention several "Judith Woodsons," and early Virginia marriage records show at least six marriages of women named Judith Woodson by 1760, but none of them married a man named Mims. I am a Woodson descendant on the non-Mims side of my family, and the whole story of the Woodsons of Virginia descending from Dr. John Woodson and his wife Sarah Winston of Flowerdew Hundred is being questioned. The book that appears to have institutionalized much of the "known" information about John and Sarah Woodson was Historical Genealogy of the Woodsons and Their Connections, compiled by Henry Morton Woodson in 1915. This book has been found to have contained many errors. For one thing, John and Sarah Woodson were already married when they arrived at Jamestown in early 1619, yet John and Robert, thought to be their sons and probably their only children, were not born until 1632 and 1634, respectively. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever found a birth or baptismal record for Sarah Woodson, but given the marriage one would believe she would have had to have been born no later than about 1600, and many sources date her birth as early as 1590. It wouldn't have been impossible for Sarah to have started having children in her 30s or 40s after 13 years of marriage, but it doesn't seem likely. In addition, nothing that I've ever seen has established that her maiden name was Winston. Many sources say that Robert Woodson married Elizabeth Ferris "circa 1656," and that one of his younger children was named Judith. (Again, it's pretty clear that Robert Woodson's wife was named Elizabeth, but I've never been able to find anybody who ever saw a marriage bond or marriage certificate saying that her maiden name was Ferris.) I have seen the wife of Benjamin Mims listed as Judith Woodson, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Ferris Woodson, but I would be very, very leery of this. For one thing, Benjamin Mims was born c. 1710, and any daughter of Robert Woodson would have been too old to be his wife. It's hard to believe that so little is known about the ancestry of people who were relatively wealthy and important in the history of our country, but as time goes by I'm becoming more and more convinced that Marvin Gaye had it right in "Heard It Through the Grapevine": "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear."

    1. The Edgefield Advertiser
    2. Hi ALL, The Edgefield Advertiser has been a great source of information. I have copies and clippings from many dated in the early 1900's and they have provided a great source to my genealogy files. This newspaper has been in the Mims family for many years. It's editor, Mrs Suzanne Mims Derrick, has been very helpful in organizing our Mims Family Reunion to be held in Edgefield, SC the Weekend of October 23, 2004. I began a subscription ($20 per year) after my visit in June and have enjoyed reading about recent events in Edgefield even though my direct ancestors left there in 1892. Here is a link to The Edgefield Advertiser online: http://www.edgefieldadvertiser.com/index.php?SS=2 The recent taking of the newspaper museum building by the town is wrong and we should all throw our support to The Edgefield Advertiser by writing letters. We Mims and Mims relatives should not let this happen without a fight. You can contact Mrs. Suzanne Mims Derrick through the link above to show your support. Jim Mims Houston, TX

    3. That is incredible. It's inconceivable to me that government at any level would use their power of eminent domain in this way. To virtually destroy a building listed on the register of National Historic Places for the purpose of building a theatre ranks high on my list of "Stupid Government Tricks" - - - my apologies to David Letterman. Do you have any e-mail addresses or telephone numbers other than those below that we might use to express our views, e.g., local newspapers, radio stations, town council, individual council members, state and federal offices, elected officials, etc. E-mail and phone calls probably are the most expeditious way to make our objections known. Although petitions offer an alternate route they would take longer to complete. For Info: The Web site from which SC's Dept. of Commerce can be contacted via e-mail is: http://www.sccommerce.com/callsc.cfm?page=&document=contact This site also includes the following phone numbers for the Dept. of Commerce: Phone: (803) 737-0400 Fax: (803) 737-0418 In searching the internet for SC's Dept. of Commerce, I noticed that in 2002, then Governor-Elect Sanford announced that businessman Robert Faith was to head that department. It was pointed out that Faith is the CEO of Greystar Real Estate Partners, LLC, based in Charleston, SC. You mentioned that the council was coerced by a local developer. What form did this take? Also, is one of the national motion picture theatre chains involved or is the purpose of the proposed theatre to provide live entertainment? In any event, I hope that the Mims family will provide a response to this council's actions that cannot be ignored. 1. Re: [MIMS,MIMMS,MIMBS] Benjamin Mims and wife Judith
    2. Ann, I am a Woodson descendant through another ancestor. Not only Judith's connection to the Mims family, but much of the Woodson genealogy beginning with John Woodson and his wife, Sarah Winston, has come into question. Undoubtedly there was a doctor John Woodson who was killed by Indians near Jamestown in 1644 - that seems to be documented in historical records of the time - but the story about the intrepid Sarah hiding their two little boys and braining Indians as they came down the chimney is being looked at closely. For one thing, if John and Sarah Woodson were the parents of Robert and John Woodson, whose births are documented as having occurred in 1632 and 1634, respectively, Sarah Woodson would have given birth to her only two children when she was 42 and 44, after many years of marriage - an unlikely occurrence in those times, when the expected life span wasn't much longer than that. 3. There is NO known evidence that Benjamin Mims' wife was a Woodson. Her name Judith is known from only one document: a deed dated Jan 1749 in Albemarle Co VA when Judith gave her consent for the sale of some land. In his will, dated 1783, Benjamin mentioned his wife but did not state her name. I don't believe it is correct to state that her name is Judith Woodson unless you have some primary source with direct evidence. Ann Blomquist Orlando, FL ----- Original Message ----- From: "R. A.
