Here is the inscription on the historic marker on the Upson County courthouse square in Thomaston: Upson County was created by Acts of the Legislature December 15th and 20th, 1824. It's named for Stephen Upson, a well known lawyer of Lexington, Georgia. Lt. General John B. Gordon, famed Confederate leader called "the second to Robert E. Lee" was born in Upson County at the settlement of Black Ankle near the Flint (or Thronateeska) River. So that sort of dispells the place of the marriage in 1796 of David Spivy Mims and Elizabeth (Betsey) Broome, doesn't it? He had a sister Betsey who married Betsey Broome's brother in Lincoln County, another of the many counties formed from Washington County which reached all the way from the east Georgia mountains to the southeast coast just north of Brunswick. The name "Savilla" got my attention. My grandmother was Della Seville O'Quinn (b. 1907), d/o Robert S. O'Quinn and Harriett Della Mims O'Quinn. Harriett was d/o David Washington Mims and gd/o Calvin. I have no idea where Grandma's middle name came from, but seeing a name so similar in the Mims family makes me wonder.... Anybody know any more about this Savilla Mims? My O'Quinns were in Avoyelles Parish, LA in the 1900 census, St Landry in 1910. Thanks for any info or ideas. Here is part of a letter written by some one named S Norman Smith in 1983 to a Mrs Mims "I borrowed a copy of the Mims book, which was compiled by your Mother in Law, from the Univ. of S C South Carolinia Library hoping that it would help me trace the Mims branch of my family. Since my Great Great Grandfather, William M mims lived and died in the St James goose creek parish of Charles Co. and the Mims book mentioned that Thomas Mims lived in same area. I wondered it these could be a connection. Since the year 1765 was mentioned in the book, the connection could be as follows; Thomas Mims lived in Charles Co in 1765 per the mims book. His son William was possibly the same William listed in the 1800 cen. in Chas as age greater than 45 In 1800 the only Mims listed in the cen. in Chas Co that could be my GGGrandfather William,s father was Joseph Mims. He could have been the son of the above William since they lived near each other.. I was digging in my Gibson file and ran into this: Margaret Mims, dau of William Brittain and Suzanne Booker, married @1800 in Midway, Monroe Co., AL a Mr. Sturdivant. >From History of Methodism in AL and W. FL: ...these gallant ministers...down the coast they trudged, covering Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Across the Great Smokies their trails led to new fields in Kentucky and Tennessee...One of the first of these was "the Natchez Country," in what is now MS. Tobias Gibson of SC saw the need for preachers...at the 1807 conference, Matthew Parham Sturdivant responded. And on that day began the history of Methodism in AL and W. FL. Does anyone have Margaret's husband's given names? I just wondered if this was him... Leah
