    1. [MIMS] BURKE CO GA-Needham Buxton and Anna Oliver.

    3. This comes from the GA list, does any one know who the Elizabeth Mims is in this??? NEEDHAM A. BUXTON, merchant and farmer, Girard, Ga., was born in Burke county in 1835, and is the son of William and Mary (Wimberly) Buxton, and the grandson of Samuel Buxton. His mother was a daughter of Needham Wimberly, a successful farmer and native of Burke county, but a man who did not own any slaves, though operating a large estate. Receiving a good common-school education, the subject of this sketch studied assiduously and fitted himself for teaching, a vocation he followed for ten years. In 1864 he enlisted in the state militia and was engaged in the battles of Atlanta and Griswoldville. In 1875 he married Anna E. Oliver, daughter of Thomas and ELIZABETH MIMS (abt 1848)Oliver. Mr. Oliver now lives in Screven county and is a leading citizen there. This union was blessed by the birth of two children now living: William O. and Julian A. The mother was born in Screven county in 1848, and died in 1878. She was a member of the Methodist church south,as is her husband now. He belongs to the masonic order and in 1889 represented Burke county in the legislature, serving with credit to himself on the following committees: Banks, manufacturing, lunatic asylum and agriculture. Upon his return from the war Mr. Buxton began teaching school, but in a few years he engaged in a mercantile business and farming. For twenty-five years he was in partnership with his brother, Samuel H. Buxton. He is at present in business for himself. Mr. Buxton is a man of strict integrity, and his word is as good as his bond. His business career has been as honorable as it has been fortunate.

    3. I have Lionel Mims being born in Va in 1683 and dying in 1736 in Henrico Co,Va. Since he married in Goochland County, Va in Jan 2 1705. It is safe to assume??? (if we do that in genealogy) that his son Thomas born 1706 ( you have 1712) was also born in Goochland Co and he stayed there for awhile. As to where Lionel was born, since he father Thomas came to America and settled in Flowerdew Hundred in 1662 and married in Middlesex County in 1677 and his first son Thomas was born there in 1681 , it sounds like they all stayed in that Upper Peninslua area around Richmond, Va. but for an exact location I dont have that. phyllis ---------- > From: Regina Marie Henderson <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Subject: [MIMS-L] Mims-Lionel & Thomas > Date: Friday, April 21, 2000 10:21 AM > > Does anyone one know where Lionel Mims (b 1683 d 1736 m. Following is the list of those who have been drawn to serve as pettit and grand jurors for the term: E. P. Jackson, J. E. Grantt, Alton C. Hooks, J. R. Craig, A. R. Cox, Caleb C. Collins, Thomas E. Burdette, F. A. Grether, J. A. Hancock, J. B. Cochran, Wiley B. Hill, Paul Davis, Leon Hebb, A. P. Ellison, J. T. Hagan, Gilbert Futch, G. L. Gaskins, A. E. Dickey, E. O. Carver, Calvert Hamilton, Chas. D. Holland, H. H. Galloway, James Hampton, W. W. Carter, Elignet Cook, L. W. Goodyear, Bruce Davis, N. B. Childs, Leslie Griffin, T. L. Cardwell, R. E. Gandy, G. B. Harbough, Thomas L. Hughes, Alfred Hoppenworth, John D. Clark, William M. Greer. It is expected that the trial of Jasper and Ed. Mims, who are charged with murdering Buey on the night of December 17th, will come up during this term of court. The Lake Wales Highlander - March 22, 1917 "Will Try Mimbs For Murder" The grand jury last Friday brought in a true bill against Ed. and Jasper Mimbs, who had been arrested last December charged with the murder of E. F. Boewe. Ed. Mimbs was charged with murder and Jasper with being an accessory. The case has been set for trial next Tuesday. The Lake Wales Highlander - April 5, 1917 Vol. II No. 5 "Father And Son Are Convicted" Ed. And Jasper Mimbs Found Guilty of Murder in First Degree After a Lengthy Trial After a trial which lasted for five days, Ed. Mimbs, charged with the murder of A. D. Buey on the 17th of December, and his father, Jasper, indicted as an accessory in the crime, were both found guilty of murder in the first degree, the jury bringing in a verdict at about three o'clock Tuesday afternoon, after being out about three hours. On account of the publicity which the murder had received and the large number of people acquainted with the defendants in the east end of the county, considerable difficulty was experienced in obtaining a jury, it taking nearly all of last Thursday to secure men satisfactory to the attorneys. The evidence showed that while Ed. Mimbs had actually fired the shots from ambush which had killed Mr. Buey, he was aided and abetted in the planning of the murder by his father. The State prosecuting attorney Burton had a strong case of circumstantial evidence against the accused and handled the proceedings in a masterly way. He was greatly assisted it the conduct of the case by J. T. Parker, of Lake Wales. The courtroom was crowded with interested spectators nearly the entire time the trial was in progress, and when the verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree was brought in by the jury, it was the universal opinion that the verdict was a most just one. Sentence has not yet been passed. Many Lake Wales people were in attendance at the trial, as both the murdered man and the defendants were well known here. The Polk County Record - Bartow, Florida - Friday, May 10, 1918 "Two Weeks Stay Of Execution In The Case Of Mimbs And Son" Governor Extends Their Time. Reported That Young Mimbs Has Made Confession to the Crime. The Mimbs' won't hang on the 17th of May as ordered, but have been given two weeks more hold on life by the governor, and they will hang on the last day of this month, unless something very important happens. It is reported that young Mimbs has given out a written confession, but elder Mimbs states that there was no frame up at all and that his son did not intend to confess as far as he knew, and that if he was to hang an innocent man would lose his life. He made the same statement with reference to his son, also: "I will go to the gallows at the last and until the noose is put around my neck will declare that I am innocent." There is still talk of saving the necks of the two men by sending them to the penitentiary for life, and a petition to that effect is now before the State Pardoning Board. The Courier Informant - Bartow, Florida - Friday, May 17, 1918 "Mimbs Hearing Set For Tuesday, May 28" The pardoning board's hearing of the appeal of Jasper and Ed. Mimbs for commutation of sentence has been set for May 28th. Tuesday Mimbs' will be represented at the hearing by L. C. Johnson, C. A. Boswell and J. W. Brady. If the pardoning board fails to set upon the plea, the Mimbs, both father and son, must hang on Friday, May 31, when their stay of execution expires. The Courier Informant - "South Florida's Big Weekly" - Bartow, Florida Tuesday, December 19, 1916 - #31, Vol. XXXVL, Section 1 "Buey found Dead In Road. Ed Mimbs Placed In Jail" A. D. Buey, a white man of about the age of thirty-five and who has been employed by the Peace Valley Farms company for several years, and bore a good reputation and was well liked by his employers and his acquaintances, was found dead on the road leading from the Peace Valley hotel to McIntyre's turpentine still last Sunday morning about eleven o'clock, by Miss Lula Bonnye, with buck and bird shot wounds over the upper part of his body. A coroner's jury consisting of M. C. Cain, as coroner, and T. J. Parker. Harold S. Butler, D. C. Mims, W. G. Driggers, H. J. Whidden and L. L. Barnes, held an inquest Sunday and their verdict in substance was that the deceased came to his death from gun-shot wounds inflicted by Ed Mimbs. His father, Jasper Mimbs, is being held as an accessory. Both of these men are in jail. It seems that Mr. Buey, who was a widower, has been paying attention to Miss Bonnye, who is a step-daughter of Jasper Mimbs, and, it is alleged, neither the father or the son looked with favor upon the suit of Mr. Buey, and had frequently reproved the young lady for allowing him to see her, and it is this fact that forms the motive that it is alleged, connects young Mimbs with the murder. There were no eye-witnesses to the killing and the evidence so far is altogether circumstantial. Young Mimbs claims he was not near the spot at the hour of the murder and can prove by several witnesses as to his presence in another vicinity. It is claimed by friends of Mr. Buey that he had on his person a short while before his death, a pearl handle pistol, about $20.00 in money and an Elgin watch, all of these were missing when the body was found. Search is being made for them and also the gun which the murderer used but none of them have been found up to the time of going to press.

    1. [MIMS-L] William Mimbs History - I
    2. Dear List, I tried to send this out ... but it must have been too large a document. I'll try sending it in four parts. Mimbs Family History - William and Lucinda Mimbs William MIMBS was born about 1850 in GA. He was married to Lucinda ROBERTS about 1867. Lucinda ROBERTS was born in 1843 in GA. She is the daughter of Jackson Roberts and Frances BROWN. The Roberts family is found in the 1850 Lee County, GA, census record (page 294-B). It is thought that William and Lucinda moved to Florida shortly before 1870. Census records seem to indicate that all of the children were born in Florida. (It is possible that the oldest child was born in GA around 1870.) William and Lucinda eventually settled in Polk County before the 1880 census was taken. They homesteaded 160 acres and began farming. The Polk County, FL, 1880 census record (page 27) indicates that William's parents were born in North Carolina. William is listed as a "laborer." The 1885 Polk County census (sheet 16) lists William as a farmer. The 1885 polk County, FL, agriculture schedule (page 643) gives us insight into life on the Mimbs homestead. On June 30, 1885, William is shown to be the owner of 160 acres - 4 acres were listed as "improved land" and 156 acres were unimproved woodland. William's farm, land, and buildings were valued at $400.00. The value of farm implements was $10.00. The live stock was valued at $75.00. William spent $50.00 on fences during 1884. All total, the farm had produced $100.00 worth of goods during 1884. William owned one horse, one milk cow, and eight chickens, which had produced 52 dozen eggs during 1884. William had cleared two acres of land for sweet potatoes. During 1884 he produced 300 bushels of sweet potatoes. During the same year, he grew five bushels of cow peas, twenty pounds of tobacco, and planted one acre in orange trees. The Mimbs homestead was located just outside of present day Lake Wales. Lucinda filed a homestead patent on December 1, 1890. The legal description of the homestead is described as the: "northwest quarter of section thirty-one in township twenty-nine south of range twenty-seven east of Tallahassee Meridian in Florida containing one hundred and fifty-nine acres and fifty-four hundreths of an acre." Today the "Mountain Lake Cut Off Road" runs through the middle of the property. During the 1880's, the nearest town to the Mimbs homestead was Bartow, about 15 miles to the west. Lake Wales, along with other neighboring towns of today, did not exist at the time. Before 1911, Lake Wales "could not be described as a wide place in the road for the there was no road" (The Lake Wales Highlander, March 9, 1916 - the first issue). "The whirr of a covey of quail or the howl of a bobcat, deer and panthers, wild turkeys and wild boar among the pine and oaks was all there was (They Built A City, page 5, Dorothy Kaucher, Ph.D., Lake Wales, 1970). During the 1850's and 60's, transportation in Polk County was by wagons drawn by oxen or mules. Mail, which arrived by boat at Tampa, was picked up by horseback twice a week. There was little incentive for a family to move to Polk County. Growth was slow. Between 1870 and 1880, the population of the county increased by only 12 people - from 3,169 to 3,181 (Yesterday's Polk County, pagge 20). In 1880, immigration to Florida began to show a marked increase. From this time there was a steady and continuous growth. In 1881, David L. Hughes and W. T. Carpenter operated general stores in Bartow. These were the only institutions of their kind in the area for many miles. Bartow could also brag of a hotel, owned by W. T. Carpenter; two or three boarding houses; and a drug store run by F. F. Bevelle. There were two church organizations, the Methodists and the Baptists. Neither of these had a building as of yet. There was a post office which received eleven mails a week; a telegraph office; two doctors; and one lawyer. On May 3, 1882, the town of Bartow was incorporated (History of Polk County Florida, page 40). Although there had been a jail in Bartow at one time, it did not exist in the early 1880's. It had fallen into disuse and decay. However, it was said that one was needed. In 1881, Hiram D. Ballard closed and sold the building and lot where the barroom had been. The cost of a liquor license had been raised so high that business became unprofitable. Drinking did not cease, though. Some citizens complained of "much firing of pistols at night on the streets, and other disorders" (History of Polk County Florida, page 39). It is interesting to note that in Polk County in the early 1880's, bacon sold for 11 cents a pound; lard, 15 cents; flour, 6¼ cents; sugar, 12½ cents; coffee, 20 cents. Except for these staples, few articles of food were sold in the local stores. Transportation was by horseback or wagon. A person could travel from Orlando to Bartow by the mail buggy for $7. The fare from Tampa to Bartow by "private subscription" was $10. The cost was only $2 by wagon if the passenger furnished his own rations. Lots in Bartow sold for $30 to $50, while land three miles from town brought from $1.25 to $5 per acre. The early 1880's brought considerable growth to Bartow. Mrs. M. L. Snoddy opened a ladies' store in 1882. Dr. J. P. Brookins, a dentist, opened the Bartow Drug House. T. M. Lybass opened a "Liquor Saloon." W. H. Pearce, near Bartow, had what was considered one of the most vigorous and symmetrical orange groves in the State. By 1882, 500 letters were mailed from the Bartow community, and probably as many received. One has to wonder if the Mimbs family ever enjoyed these "luxeries" of the day! William died on December 25, 1886, in Polk County, FL. (1) According to his grandaughter, Ida Blount, William died from cancer of the mouth. It is not known where in Polk Co. William Mimbs is buried. Lucinda is found as a widow in the 1895 Polk County census (page 495). She is listed as a farmer. Her children are all listed as students. The 1900 Polk County census also lists her as a farmer owning her farm free of mortgage. Lucinda died on October 6, 1917, in Lake Wales, Polk County, FL. (2,1) She was buried on October 7, 1917, in the Gandy Cemetery in Connersville, Polk County, FL.

    2. I found a William Mims listed on page 151 in the 1850 census in Sumter County, GA. He is a 34 year old white male. His wife, Catherine, is 22. There are two children ... Elizabeth, 2 years old and William who's age is listed as 1/2. They are living in the 27th District. Does anyone have any information on this family? I'm chasing a lead ... the child is born in the right year to be my William who eventually married Lucinda Roberts. I do not have access to Sumter County records ... therefore I don't know anything further about this line. I would love to find out what happened to them. Any ideas? Joey Mimbs
